I'm pretty surprised by the way troops are stationnned in the empire...
Some Cities have two Phalanx units defending them, while others have one catapult and one crusader unit doing that job...! I also don't see the reason why these troops are stationed in cities since we are in a Rebublic! The situation in Gwynn was terrible: In the city were fortified a diplomat(!), a trireme, a phalanx and a warrior, while another diplo was waiting just there!!!! Syncronicity (the only walled city) had two Phalanx and one Pikemen unit fortified when Independance had TWO WARRIORS!!!
Az's first job will be to relocate these troops and reorganise the army of the Civ empire.
My goals are the following:
Put the Zulu city of Klondike under CivFanatic influence again as it could at any moment become a base for a Zulu attack to the southern territories. Negotiation with them will be held so that a solution to that problem is found.
My other goal is to gather a small army on the coast near our Glorious Capital. Rumours have it that the Mongols who probably are on the other side of the ocean are also gathering an army which will soon ready to leave the shores of the Mongol empire. Consul Bortei herself ordered the expedition. So we need to show the Mongols that the Civ empire opposes to their extension eastward.
1120:
-A salt caravan heading for Rome leaves Abydos and a Gems one from Civrules (rush-built). According to our estimations they should reach the "Eternal City" <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif" border=0> in 1440 (17 Turns).
-A trireme had left in 1100 the port of Gwynn with a diplomat and a Phalanx unit on board. The ship was heading for Klondyke. (The ship was fortified so I was able to move it while the turn was finished).
Now the Zulu city is in disorder! The Senate decides that Klondyke must be taken at any cost since the Zulus can't control it properly and also because crimes are being committed against the Fanatic population of the city...
The Zulu leader refuses to admit that fact and announces his decision of going to war with us. The population of Klondyke (60% of which is Fanatic) is tired of Zulu dictatorial regime and agrees to join the Civ empire. But the diplomat that negotiates with the rebel leaders offers 93 gold to sweeten the pot and obtain an immediate end of the rebellion. Klondike peacefully joins the Civfanatic republic. Medicine is given to us. A pikemen unit. Is replaced by a phalanx which came from Gwynn. After the replacement of the so hated old guard people of Klondike agree to leave the streets. The Pikemen unit which was found in Klondike will be transferred to Gwynn on the continent
-Livia of the Romans ignores our demand for gold.

-Explorer leaves Wales. The Expedition will explore the poles. As we may find a way to safely reach another continent from there and also find huts.

-The relations with the Roman empire are tensed as Livia refuses our demand for gold again.

-A Barbarian uprising near Pithom is dealt with by local detachment. It is firmly believed that roman secret services are behind this rebellion....

-Barbarian leader escapes in towards Roman lands and disappears...
-A detachment of Crusaders reports that no roman city lies between Python and Wales. But a fortified Roman Legion occupies the mountains near these cities...

-Zulus and Mongols sign a secret alliance against us!
-The Parliament decides almost unanimously that the Zimbabwe-Karakoroum axis is now a major threat for us.

-Many warriors are disbanded in cities since they have been replaced by phalanx units.

-Although the Mongols are our enemies they accepted to have some peaceful negotiations.
The Mongols took 100 gold, Monotheism and Construction from us, in exchange of their maps. The Mongols are still our enemies because of their alliance with the hated Zulus. -Stormerne builds a caravan which is now heading for Cornmaster to help building the wonder

Money is needed so that we rush build some constructions. It's useless discovering advances since the Mongols are more advanced. The expedition that had left CivFanatics.com, will soon reach Bokhara. Troops will land on the mountains near the city, which will provide a good fortified spot for the Phalanx while the catapult will launch an attack.

-The Ship that was heading for Karakoroum discovers a NONE settler which could be very useful to develop the new lands that will come under Civ Fanatic rule...

From now on we probably should be playing 10 turns each as was originally decided. Actually 10 turns were to be played from round 3 (just finished) but we all played 15. I think that was appropriate in this case since several of us have been away on vacations etc. and this also gave Az (playing for the first time in this game) more time to do something to his taste.

Any opinions on this ?

Well everyone, I'm sorry I have held up the game for all of you. I'm afraid I have to withdraw from the game. It is amazing just how busy a person can get when a job transfer and a move across the country get dropped in your lap! I have enjoyed playing the few turns that I was able to, and reading about all of your adventures. I will certainly follow the story of the Glorious Civilization of the CivFanatics with much interest. I look forward to being able to play another succession game after my move is completed. Good luck to all!

I suggest we continue but a few (1-3) new players should be welcome to join us. I think it would be more fun if there were more than 3 players as we are now.

I have been unable to open the save game file posted by Az. It is probably a compatibility problem between my win98 PC and Az's Mac. I have emailed Az for more info on how he was able to load the previous save game.
 
I'm sending it to him by mail.

I wanted to see how things were going but also couldn't read Az's save file. So I hacked it in a hex editor and it worked ! So in case there are more problems I'm attaching a file I saved following this that should load without problems.

That sounds nice. I know nothing about PCs. Can any PC user do that?

Yes, provided they have a suitable utility (e.g. a hex editor). I 'discovered' that all my save files start with the string CIVILIZE but your file had some stuff before that. After I tried removing this additional stuff it worked.

Thanks TheViking you have saved the day. I loaded your save game file with no problems. I was also able to load the file from Az. All I had to do was add .sav to the name so my Civ2 could see the file.

1400AD (0) We now have 19 cities with 3.46 million people and are a Republic. We have two separate Wonders being built and 366 gold. Tax is 80% and Science 20%.

1420AD (1) Romans develop invention which Zulus get from Great Library. Romans start Leo's Workshop. Romans demand we withdraw troops. We withdraw Crusader. Make peace with Zulus for 50 gold. Rush build Harbor in Wales.

1440AD (2) Add Settler to Wales to get pop up to 2.

1460AD (3) Rome demands withdrawel off Pikemen near Cumae. I comply. Zulu Explorer spots Wales. Gems Carravan arrives in Rome for 49 gold. Salt Caravan gives 136 gold.

1480AD (4) Subvert Ravenna for 2 x 220 = 440 gold. City of Busirus founded on Island north of Mongols.

1500AD (5) Zulus gain Bridge Building from Mongols.

1510AD (6) Barbarian Legion lands from Trireme near Asyut.

1520AD (7) Diplomat in Asyut bribes barbarian Legion for 82 gold. Exploring Trireme and Pikemen discover a tribe of Settlers. Explorer finds Zulu city of Bapedi.

1530AD (8) Zulu explorer near Presleypolis. Mongols start Leo's Workshop. Explorere finds Zulu city of Hlobane.

1540AD (9) Trireme finds Zulu city of London. Change Tax to 20% and Science 80%. Rush build city wall in Busaris.

1560AD (10) We and the Zulu's both develop Gunpowder. We start researching Democracy. Explorer discovers Zulu capital city of Zimbabwe. We now have 21 cities (1 city bribed and 1 city built) with 4.4 million people and our power is still supreme and reputation honorable. We are still at war with the Mongols and have 641 gold.

I did a couple of things Az suggested the Caravan trade with Rome and the Aqueduct for Syncronicity. I decided against the placing of 2 strength units on Mountains as vulnerable to Catapult attack. If they had been veteran units or settlers could build forts that might have been different. Also since we are in Republic the Senate is liable to make peace behind our back.

The distance between us and the Mongols is too far for it to be easy to fight each other using Triremes. I built Busiris near the Mongols so it will attract Mongol attention and be a base for spying, bribary or direct attack. An Embassy with the Mongols would also help.

I was also considering building a city near London as a base against the Zulus.

I have a Diplomat in a Trireme near Rome that could be used to move some distance east of Rome to Bribe a city fairly cheaply. That way we could split the Roman Empire up and also pick up the Bridge Building science.

At the moment we have two Wonders partially complete. I have been concentrating on trying to get one completed so we can get some use out of it. The Romans have been building Leo's Workshop in Cumae for some time. The Zulus and Mongols are also building it. If we do not complete it very soon someone else will get it. If it is the Romans we can probably capture it but if someone else we are in trouble as we have allready missed Sun Tzu's War Academy. My preference would be to complete Leo's in Cornmaster and then, when we have Democracy switch Elvis P to The Statue Of Liberty. This will give us the option of Fundamentalism for war and Democracy for peace.

Off course its all up to TheViking now and I wait to see what he decides. I have attached the save game file so Good Luck.

The reign of Viking 4 the babysitter and kindergarten cop

For a pleasant change, unlike his ancestors Viking 4 makes the pleasant discovery that at the start of his reign he actually has some cash (641 gold) to spend. However, he wants to change the city management a little - marketplaces and aqueducts should be rush built. "You call those microscopic villages cities ?! Have babies - and lots of them !".

1550AD (0): Synchronicity rush buys marketplace. Taxes adjusted to 20% science (21 turns) and 80% tax (181/41) to fund a massive effort to improve our infrastructure and also to ensure we can rush buy Leo if necessary. Adjust production/resource use in several cities, Asyut switches production from settler to marketplace. Switch production from harbor to aqueduct in Stormeville. Rush buy caravan in CivFanatics.com.

1560AD (1): Zulus want to speak, threaten to use their mighty (hah !) forces to drive our explorer away from Zimbabwe. Order restored in Gwynn, science is now 20 turns and taxes 201/42. Caravan enters Cornmaster, we are close to finishing Leo and can easily rush buy it if necessary.

1570 AD (2): Abydos, CivRules!!, Asyut and Ripken rush buy marketplaces.

1580 AD (3): Zulus break cease fire and kill our explorer (but now we know were they are !). Abydos, CivRules!!, Asyut and Ripken start building aqueducts. Caravan enters Cornmaster which now will finish Leo in a few turns. CivFanatics.com caravan arrives at Synchronicty and establishes a trade route. Taxes are now 234/46 and science 19.

1590 AD (4): Uncomfortably strong Roman forces near Ravenna, and this city is rather isolated. Archer and diplomat climb a mountain between Rome and Veii. Pithom rush buys marketplace.

!600 AD (5): Romans develop democracy. Need to steal this soon. The fun starts !!! Luxuries set to 60%, tax 40% and the people of CivFanatics start having lots and lots of babies. Several cities rush buy aqueducts and marketplaces, now most cities Viking 4 wants to grow beyond size 8 have aqueducts and those that should grow to size 8 have marketplaces. Resource use adjusted to emphasize trade. Leo rush bought in Cornmaster.

1610 AD (6): Cornmaster builds Leonardo's workshop and lots of units get upgraded to musketeers. Zulus acquire democracy from Romans. Zulus and Romans stop building Leo and Romans switch to Statue of Liberty. President's day celebrated in lots of cities. Aqueducts rush bought in a few more cities. Only 82 gold left now. Population 4,750,000. Viking 4 suddenly notices that the musketeer on the mountain between Rome and Veii is from Ravenna so it would be bad to lose this city. Talk to Romans, they demand gunpowder and it is given to them since now is an extremely bad time for war because everyone is having lots of babies (but revenge, revenge...).

1620 AD (7): Ravenna rush buys a crusader. Luxuries raised to 70%.

1630 AD (8): Population 6,320,000. Some cities can't continue celebrating, despite Viking 4's "Anyone who doesn't celebrate will be shot !" promise (which he breaks). Diplomat finds that Veii, which was of size 1 the last time we checked, is now of size 7.

1640 AD (9): Zulu government overthrown. Pop. 7,100,000. Celebrations shut down because several cities can't continue celebrating and/or have reached the desired size (e.g. Synchronicity is size 12). Need 20% luxuries to keep everyone happy. Taxes set to 80% to fund wonders and wars, resulting in 332/63. Adjust some cities for increased production and less trade. Rush buy barracks in Pithom.

1650 AD (10): Zulus become a democracy. 8 cities stop celebrating. Rush buy a diplomat in Ravenna. Population 7,100,000 as before. We now have 376 gold, 10 settlers, 20 musketeers, 6 crusaders, 1 catapult, 4 triremes, 2 diplomats and 1 caravan. City of AzBeenHere renamed AzWillBeHere.

Suddenly the babies/teenagers (big part of the population) of CivFanatics start disliking Viking 4 for no obvious reason and rebel so he runs away in a hurry. Nobody knows what happened to him.


A few notes:

The trireme south of Rome is heading for the mountain between Rome and Veii to build a fortress which can then be filled with lots of crusaders and diplomats to conquer Rome. I think Ravenna's defenses are becoming strong enough (two crusaders to kill everything in sight) for it soon to be OK to provoke the Romans to declare war so we can steal democracy and bridge building. They are building Statue of Liberty in Cumae but unless they finish it very soon (in which case we can bribe/conquer Cumae) we can soon finish it (by rush buying) in Elvis P and then maybe have some fun with fundy.

Synchronicity is currently building Shakespeare's Theatre which strangely might actually be a good idea because then it can easily reach size 20 (once we get sanitation) using WLTPD and then all trade routes (there are lots of them !) to this city will grow by 1. Actually Shakespeare and King Richard's crusade might be an interesting one-city-wonder combo...

The settler south of Presleypolis is going to start constructing a highway to Pithom.

Barracks should be built in some of the production cities for veteran units (veteran crusaders rule !!).

The Mongols have not yet discovered Busiris.

Diplomats should probably be sent to the Zulus to steal techs.

Triremes suck, we need navigation.


Further decisions on this all left to Az who will receive the save file by email and I have also attached it to this message.
