If you want to split hairs, the war technilcally started in 1937 and didn't end until 1991....

Fighting ended in 1945, occupation doesn't count as part of the war (unless it was a bloody nasty one like Iraq).

The Surrender of the Sovereign nation of Germany didn't come into effect until 1990.
