FFH 2 and Civ 5

Actually, the main feeling I'm getting from the screenshots so far is disappointment that the terrain looks so much like Civ 4 and there's no elevation, basically scuppering my hopes of a decent Alpha Centauri mod from day one. :(
...so you don't consider Planetfall decent? :(

If CivV is a little less hardcoded than CivIV, however, we might be able to do more about elevation - if we can define another plot type (besides Peak, Hill, Plain) and can give it a new height map, then we could be able to emulate elevations - graphically and gameplay-wise.

Cheers, LT.

Hmm ... are there still going to be stacks of doom?

Screenshots have hinted at a More Advanced-Wars esque fighting style, although both options (keeping Stacks, and ridding yourself of them) have pros and cons.

I'm not sure if the screenshots were hinting at no stacks, or if they were just trying to show off all the various unit graphics. Oh, and I really, really hope that they do SOMETHING about the graphics... The graphics are at least half the reason why I can't go back to playing regular civ after playing FFH - it just looks too childish and fake.

Sorry, I have no answers for you. Feel free to speculate wildly.

Sounds fun! Here we go:

Kael has been incredibly active on the forums here for years, always posting updates and commenting on lore. Then, suddenly, about three months ago *poof!*, he is gone without a trace. One month ago he came back, but his posts per day are waaaaay down. What has he been doing? What has been eating up his time?

I submit that he is working on a secret Civ5 project. That's right, ladies and gents... FFH3 is already underway, and will be released in a bundle with Civ5!!!

Or it could be the either of the 'New granddaughter' or 'Writing a book' things we've heard....

Then, when CivV debuts without the amazing inclusion of FFH3, we can rise up in anger against Firaxis for treating Kael unfairly and secretly axing what was supposed to be a key component of the release!

I think any porting attempts would be better spent trying to port FFH2 to Elemental.

Hehe ... porting FFH2 to elemental (once its ever finished) would indeed be nice. Might take some doing to get Angel Art assets however. Im sure the default elemental Demons could act as placeholders for the Infernal art ... or something of the sort.

However, one thing you are overlooking, is that Elemental will likely come to shelves around the same time as Civ5 ... if not later. Furthermore, a port to Elemental would require a complete overhaul/revision of its game mechanics. (likely for Civ5, but definitely for Elemental)

Now ... as far as my personal opinion? I would LOVE a FFH2 mod for elemental. I would probably like it a whole heck of alot better than an FFH3 mod for Civ 5 ... although as Elemental is still only a conglomerate of ideas im not entirely certain that my vision would be matched by the final product.

Therefore, Civ5 looks like the best prospect of a "port" using the same group of people, meanwhile Elemental looks like the best prospect for a spin-off Mod using new people (or something)

It's great that Beyond the Sword has moved on from being a mere mod of Fall from Heaven and is trying to launch an actual retail product. Good on them!

hahahaha, awesome post xien

yeah

I see a lot of posts like this in threads about FFH3 and such

Spoiler :
Firaxis tried to hire Kael, he told em to sit and spin. He doesn't need the pittance they'd pay him and he likes the flexible schedule that comes with being a hobbyist too much.

I don't mean to offend. Planetfall is a good attempt to re-image SMAC within the limitations of the Civ 4 engine, but terrain elevation and the unit workshop are pretty big features to be missing. I blame Firaxis for this, though, not the modders. I don't know why they don't release the code for the rest of the EXE, considering that the graphics engine must be long out of date by now and that they already removed the copy protection check in the last patch.

Because the graphics engine used is the Gamebryo-engine which does not belong to Firaxis, they only purchased to license to use it - hence it's legally impossible for them to release the code.

Hence my hopes for CivV - that they segment away all licensed parts, allowing us more access to the base functions.

Cheers, LT.

Fair enough. Are they writing their own for Civ 5 or are we going to end up with the exact same problems when it comes to modding?

Popular opinion won't impact what I end up doing, honestly; May be better off pinning your hopes on Ahwaric or Sephi. Or the FF team. ;)
:p
Pointing at someone else, huh?

I think the only thing we can do is to wait... and speculate wildly ;)
Anyway, I do not plan to make FfH 3, even IF I would like to do it, it has active team on it's own and I would be just a tresspasser.

First, I am going to play unmodded Civ 5 for some time, then check how moddable it is.
And then, I might release Orbis 2.
Please do not expect it to be more FfH than Warhammer FB, might even be completly new setting. But still fantasy & medieval/renaissance eras centered.

For now, I am going to work on Orbis, test new ideas & teach myself coding.
That will make porting certain items easier when (or if) the time comes.

Good thing is, the ranged attacks are in - no need to code that... :mischief:

Pretty much my general idea too; A new setting would be nice. If you'd get on wave more often we'd (Myself, Opera, Grey Fox) let you in on the discussion.
