FFH NES III: The Eastern Expanse

one thing i noticed that's been forgotten here: ur command sub-ability score determines the max amount of people that can be sent on a mission.

My bad. I forgot to add that rule, I'll put it in as well.

can we spend starting points on hiring more people? three is a bit small, and if initial research is that much worse then ingame research then I'm going to want something else to spend those points on.

We weren't going to let general points be spent on recruiting more people simply because population growth is a fairly slow process. It is hard to grow more than 50% per turn, so allowing different organiations to start at different population levels would lead to even larger differences in population later and it might be impossible to ever catch up. Each organization will start with 10 people and you can use the recruit mission to increase it from there. The amount of people recruited by the mission can increased by either assigning more of your population to it or spending gold or faith points on the mission. So in a way you can spend your general points on recruiting, but it is not a direct method so it isn't as cost effective as those would be. If you really want more people fast, invest your general points in gold to hire them or if you are on good terms with any gods you could also try using faith points in a miracle to get people to join you.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by three. Are you referring to intial population (10)or the number of first tier innovations in one branch (3)?

Are specialization tree's research doubled for initial spending?

Yes. The difference between this and the culture bonus is when it occurs. Culture bonus applies when you generate rp, and the specialization bonus applies when you spend rp. Since you aren't actually generating rp right now, you don't get the culture bonus.

Sorry to everyone who sent pm's. I'm short on time now and will be back around 10ish after class. I'll respond to your messages then.

Yeah, sorry about that, I didn't see your response in your previous answer when I posted again.
So how much does it cost to hire people?
Do we get to define what our starting people are? ie mages, priests, soldiers, farmers, etc

Ah, for some reason I was thinking we only had three starting people. Nvm

Can a hidden base be bought on a later occasion ?

No, hidden base is only available at this beginning update. You can still hide people, objects, or buildings that aren't part of your headquarters, but the headquarters can only be hidden using general points, which will only be available at this first update. Any base not hidden in the first update will become fairly easy to locate just by asking around.

A hidden headquarters is very expensive, but also very powerful. There are only two ways for an organization or government to find a headquarters hidden in this way: 1. The owner reveals its location, or 2. Search building by building until it actually is found. And even then, it could be possible to mistake the headquarters for something else. This means that your headquarters is hidden from everyone in the city, including the authorities, unless they expend a huge amount of effort looking for it.

can we move our headquarters to a hidden building and thus make the headquarters hidden?

can we move our headquarters to a hidden building and thus make the headquarters hidden?

Well that would be a good tactic. ;) But no, headquarters aren't going to be moveable for a couple of reasons. The first is that your headquarters is the square where your sphere of influence is measured from. If your headquarters were moved, that would radically change your sphere of influence, which is something we didn't want to have happen. There will never be a reason for you to lose inlfuence in a square, just to gain influence in new ones.

The other reason is that it simply makes your organization too hard to destroy. Destroying an organization's headquarters will kill the organization and this is really the only feasible method to completely kill off an organization. If hq's could be moved than it would be nearly impossible for any organizations to be destroyed even by a massively more powerful group. Hq's do give a defensive bonus in combat, so they are hard enough to assault as it is.

About hiding individual buildings - this is frequently for hiding your involvement with a bussiness or other operation. At most it might be hiding a single operation/project of your organization, but hiding your hq involves hiding all the organization and coordinated operations that come from your hq. Therefore, it is much easier to hide individual buildings or projects than actually hiding your entire headquarters.

So our organization can't be down-graded even if we do badly in some fight and lose 90% of our people, all our agents are compromised, and the headquarters almost was destroyed?
How extensively can we hide projects?
Can we do things in any square we have influence without penalty?
when will the update be?

I hadn't thought of that. In that case you probably would be downgraded, although the chances of such a horrible event happening in one turn are very low, it would probably take a longer time.

How extensively can we hide projects?

It depends on a couple of things. First of all, these types of hiding would require research, specifically in the stealth branch of the villany tree. Your stealth subscore would factor into how successfully your attempt to hide things are.

We've been trying to only reveal mechanics that have been discovered so far, since there is a lot already in the system. There are many mechanics that are discovered through research and will only be applicable to those who research them. So rather than overwhelming everyone with them ahead of time, we're saving them for later.

Which is essentially my long way of saying "I'm not telling yet." ;) If you really want to find out you'll need to research those innovations.

Can we do things in any square we have influence without penalty?

There won't be any real penalty, but units will have to move from your hq to the other square. There are sort of "built in" penalties like that since you would be more spread out and have a greater territory to defend but nothing in the system really restricts you.

when will the update be?

As long as everyone gets their orders in for the Friday deadline, it will be up by Sunday. So far I have 3 players' orders already in. If anyone wants to change the orders they sent in that is fine too, just send me another pm by Friday.

You can always check the 2nd post of the thread, I'm going to keep the most recent events like updates, rules changes, and orders deadlines posted there.

Reminder - Turn 1 orders due tommorow.

I have 4 sets so far. If anyone sent orders already but needs to make changes to them, just send me another pm and I'll use the new one instead.

As long as I get the last set of orders tommorow, the update will be up by Sunday.

would you reply to my PM, please?

can we make our backstory puplic already, if we want it to be puplic or are your going to use those info for the first update?
i`m keen to know whit which sort of organisations i`m surroundet....

Sure, if you want it to be public you can post it or any stories about your organization in the thread. As for the updates, I'm only going to post what people would be ovious from your orders, so I won't give away any of your organization's backstory unless you tell me to. Also, if an occurance is important but can't be traced to your organization, that is how it will be treated in the update. Things that you do even more secretly or on a very small scale probably won't be reported at all in the update.

And I've got everyone's orders for the first update in so we're on schedule for Sunday. :goodjob: Thanks to everyone for dealing with all the delays and changes we've had early on. It should be a lot smoother from here on out.

I demandeth update!

Hooray. Time for rave party.

Update 1

Carnivals, Crimes, and a New Religion

It’s like a country club, except we can join

The inhabitants of the Nelph river valley have never had much entertainment available. The Balseraph carnivals draw a large crowd but eventually one even grows tired of their antics. So when agents begin to spread throughout Cesslen and Trez, looking for recruits to you’re their organizations, many people are just bored enough to respond. Some recruits even bring their friends or family members to their new source of diversion.

All recruit missions last turn brought in twice as many recruits as usual.
Recruit missions this turn will also have an increased effect.

A new faith in Cesslen

As far as organized religion goes, the citizens of Cesslen have always had just two choices: to follow the Bannor Church of the Order, or to belong to no organized faith at all. Recently, the situation has changed. A group of preachers has taken to the streets, spreading their message of faith and justice, embodied in a new religion called “The Two Hammer.”

The preachers are few in number, and mostly artisans. However, there a few well known judges that preach with them, and many people are immediately impressed by the high class members of this new faith.

The power of these speeches has spread by word of mouth throughout the city. Those who have witnessed the speeches attest not only to the eloquence and truth of their words, but also to an inner feeling, like that of a divine presence, that the speeches inspire. They claim that there truly is a powerful god behind this faith, and they have felt her touch. Oddly enough they are adamant on this last point, that it was definitely a female presence that contacted them.

The authorities of Cesslen were immediately interested in meeting representatives of this new faith. Fortunately, they had to look no farther than their doorstep – a pair of representatives had already travelled to the city hall to speak with them. Several of the authorities also confessed to feeling a divine spark when talking to the members of The Two Hammer, and a few have professed their interest in possibly joining the religion.

Over the past month, interest in the faith continues to grow and some even expect that the city council will declare it an official faith soon.

“The Two Hammer” faith is now a minor religion in Cesslen
An exceptionally large number of converts join the organization of The Two Hammer

Another Carnival

The Balseraph carnivals in Cesslen are well known, but their erratic schedules of coming and going leaves a gap when there is little entertainment to be found. A group of entrepreneurs seem to have found a profitable solution to this problem, and have formed their own carnival in the city. While it doesn’t host the splendors, bizarre magic, or exotic oddities found in the Balseraph carnivals, it does provide a useful diversion when the Balseraph are not in town. Also, it is a much more feasible expenditure for the poorer classes. It may be dirty and run down but it sure is cheaper than the attractions the Balseraphs haul in. Many groups are looking to see if this venture will make a profit.

No effect

Home torched in Cesslen

A small home in one of the seedier sections of Cesslen was found torched to the ground. The remains of its inhabitants, a young man and woman, were found in the wreckage of their home. It was not clear how the accident had started, but the city guard stated that evidence did point to the home being deliberately set on fire from the outside. Various theories were composed as to who could have committed such an act, but none of them could describe why this particular couple was targeted.
The answer came from a exceptionally bright young guardsman who identified some objects in the debris as originating from the Balseraph carnival of “Jejalok” which was currently in town. Asking around he discovered that the man owed extensive debts due to money lost at the carnival, and had got into a fight with a Balseraph agent at the carnival only days before.

No effect

Balseraphs flee Cesslen

The Balseraph carnival “Jejalok” left Cesslen heading east only three days after the accident was reported. It was not until six days after the incident that the young guardsman came forth with his explanation that the man had been murdered for being unable to repay his debts. His discovery was only further vindicated by the lack of any valuable objects or coins left in the destroyed house. For his discovery, the guardsman was promoted. The Cesslen government is trying to regain contact with the travelling carnival of “Jejalok” to make the murder answer for his crime.

Reward posted by the Cessel City Council for information concerning the location of the Carnival of Jejalok

Well that was a long 30 minutes. :mischief:

Sorry, massive unexpected diversion in the middle of writing the update that required immediate attention.

Anyways, stats should be emailed tonight/tommorow. If you don't have them by tommorow night than I messed up, otherwise hold out they are coming.

Technologies discovered should be up tommorow too, there is a slight chance I might have to put it off until tuesday but most likely it will be tommorow.

If you didn't notice yourself in the update, well then you didn't do any big high profile activity. ;) Only things that are very public will make it into updates. So most organizations are still unknown along with who their player is. I was really tempted to reveal all the good background info on your organizations but I'm just too nervous to mix up what parts are secret and what aren't. So I've decided not to reveal any backstory that wouldn't be revealed by your actions, that is up to you to do. That way I can't mess up and accidentally give away more than I'm supposed to.

So if you want to get your name/backstory out there you can just post whatever you want in the thread. Stories are great too if you want to write them. One last note on stories, you can write them about a mission or something for a small boost every once in a while. It might not always help a lot but it can give you a decent benefit and will certainly never hurt. That said, stories aren't required at all, but they are fun. :)

If it works for everyone, I'm thinking of trying for weekly updates and using the orders due friday, update done sunday schedule. In the future, it won't be as late on sunday, :D and stats will always be out by monday at least. That sound good?
