President of the United States
In the Second World War, the 3-way clash between the Japanese, the Soviets and the Allies for the Pacific was one of the bloodiest conflicts known to man. Even after Japan's surrender to the USSR's invasion, the battles only got worse. In 1946, while the East Coast was rioting in chaos, a Soviet force appeared from the sea, punching into Seattle with a vengeance. The only American elements around to stop them were three of the four Iowa-class battleships - and the United States Army's Fifth Battalion.
Colonel Jeremiah Sawyer was the commander of the 5th Battalion, seconded by Major James Webb and Captains Mark Bannon and Nick Parker. A series of vicious battles raged through the Rocky Mountains, all the way to a little town called Cascade Falls, where the US government unveiled a nuclear weapon, which they used against the Soviet army before it could engage the American elements. A lot of men died in the push that shoved the USSR out of the United States, but it was accomplished - finally. On the down side, the USA had essentially ceased to exist in the rioting, and Sawyer was pressured by Webb and the governors of Oregon and Washington to take up emergency leadership.
By now, a chain of command has mostly solidified, although it is far from complete. Sawyer has been forced into the role of acting President of the United States - as the Fifth Battalion is still an arm of the actual US government, rather than a rebel state. The captain of the USS Missouri has become the head of the navy, and Sawyer's old officers are now his lieutenants in even more ways.
The United States' Reunification begins now.
