Filefront is closing

I'd just like to remind people that they can start thinking about compressing and splitting their files now. For those people with 2GB mods, you can just create 10 x 200MB .rar parts

As pointed out in the thread, Atomic Gamer has too small of a file size limit to be useful for many modmakers.

Edit:
You can also check out Strategy Informer, which also has a hosting service.
Strategy Informer has a 500MB limit, going with them :)

Noooooo! Filefront was pretty good, nice, simple, unclottered, good download rates.

I dislike that so many Morrowind and oblivion mods are hosted on Fileplanet, that site is a cluttered annoying mess, but better than many alternatives I guess.

Rapidshare is another word for poop.

I recommend using our host Atomic Gamer. Wait queue is not that bad, since you can start it and browse the forum.

You can also check out Strategy Informer, which also has a hosting service.

Thx for the info.;)

Yeah that looks about the best for now, EDIT: (I am talking directly to their rep now, 5:55 am, also Atomic Gamer left a message to them also) but still breaking up 2 GB of just one mod is alot, not to mention that alot of people have TONS of trouble putting them in the correct area when doing this, as they have in my mod already and its only two downloads for ONE mod:mischief:
SO making them have alot of downloads PER mod would really confuse some of them even more.

EDIT: Alot of my stuff here then for now will be out of order beginning 30 Mar.

Ones that are free are better, and Mega only holds your file for 90 days from the last d/l, and its like trying to figure out Chemistry trying to find out how to use Mega for ujploading?.

Somebody has got to have a better solution.

Not to be heretical, but maybe you could split your mod up into multiple downloads.

Or, maybe what's needed is for somebody to upload something called "Bunch of Leaderheads" "Bunch of Units" etc..each a big 500 megabyte file containing some of the most commonly used assets. Then mods would just tell users to also download the relevant asset pack and use paths into those instead of including the same material that's in twenty other mods. That would save on size.

So the user who intended to download mods would just install the mod "Bunch of Buildings" etc...like any other mod.

Also maybe you could get some more out of fpk?

Are we going to lose any OLD scenarios etc? I mean Civ3 stuff that noone really looks at anymore?

Probably. Of course if no one really looks at it anymore, it is probably defacto lost anyway.

I have a forum that I will be willing to host files on. I started the forum to keep AARs on but it's really not being used right now. I set the attachment limit to 2gb so big files shouldn't be a problem. I don't know what the bandwidth speed is like (it's Yahoo) so it is what it is. I'll be happy to host as long as I can. All I ask is that you put the file in the appropriate download section for now. I can sort them later if need be. And please, no abuse or I'll have to deputize a Moderator or two.
You have to join the forum to post/upload your file. Once you do that you can view your post and see the file. Simply right-click the file name and copy the link location. You can then post the link here (or anywhere) and link to the file directly (no need to even send people to my forum unless you just want to).

The site is here: AARCentral

To the Moderators here: If this post is not appropriate I apologize. Feel free to delete it but please, please don't ban me! :please: :D

They are trying to backup everything it seems. I just don't know what they will do when everything is in backup.

It seems they already did a backup of everything from Civilization IV.

You can upload for free on fileplanet and they allow really big files & mods I know I have friends post HL2 conversions there and other friends post there demos there. you just have fill out a lot of descriptions for your file & they track how many downloads you get. I can;t see them backing up all of filefront it a good 48 terabytes of data. Also yahoo guy, Yahoo will shut site down as soon 1 or two people download a file over 200mb a few times cause you will exceed there bandwidth limit.

No, but it seems it isn't only one group's effort, but rather a lot of people. And they aren't backing up everything, only the most important it seems. Civilization IV was considered important I guess. But well, how many GBs of Civ4 are in there anyway?

Just pointed the link out so people can follow what will happen with this effort after the site goes to hell. Maybe they upload a part of what they backedup somewhere.

Well I could host few small 50 100 mb files I have 5 Terabytes of Bandwidth a month. and not hard set a file tracker for downloads.
