Final Fantasy Mod Progress Updates, Part II

I already have FF theme music for all eras.... I don't have any custom diplo music, though.

As for Horlais, it looks like you're right (although Hortais sounds better IMO), I guess we can blame Brady Games for putting a typo in their strat guide....

Just curious...which Final Fantasy games do you use music from? Is it too much to ask for you to list the ones you plan to use?

IMO ff7 had the best music..
i LOVE the chocobo racing music, and the boss battle music (and every other track :D )

Final Fantasy 8's music was much better, in my opinion, but the point isn't what music we like the best, it just would make sense for the Final Fantasy Mod to contain a mosaic of music from many different Final Fantasy games...

Well, as I posted on Page 6 of this thread:

Ancient:
AncMEFull = Auron's Theme
AncGRFull = Sword of Doubt (Beatrix battle theme)
AncECFull = Balamb Garden
AncORFull = Cosmo Canyon
AncNAFull = FFVII Opening/Makou Reactor Bombing Run

Medieval:
MidMEFull = FFX Battle Theme
MidGRFull = FFIX Battle Theme
MidECFull = FFVIII Overture
MidORFull = The Highwind Takes Flight
MidNAFull = Cid Highwind's Theme

Industrial:
IndMEFull = Seymore Battle Theme
IndGRFull = Black Mage Village (FFIX)
IndECFull = The Man With the Machinegun (Laguna's battle theme)
IndORFull = Crazy Motorcycle (FFVII when you're escaping the Shinra Building)

Modern:
Techno MixFull = Prelude (THE Final Fantasy song, been in every FF game)
StarsFull = Dark Messenger (FFIX)
SmashFull = The One WInged Angel
NightengaleFull = Maybe I Am a Lion (FFVIII)
ModernFull = Still More Fighting (FFVII Shinra Boss theme)

Menu Music = The Place I'll Return to Someday (FFIX Menu theme)

As you can see it's pretty much VII, VIII, IX and X, with the Prelude thrown in for good measure (the prelude has been used pretty much unchanged since FF I).

Perhaps a possibility would be to combine multiple tracks into one mp3 so that each category would play more than one song...the biggest problem I can see is the majority of those are high tempo battle themes...it might be wise to try to mix in some soft, subtle music, so that it plays one, fades out for a little bit, then switches to a different song. I think I know of a program that can do that...but it's your call whether you think it's worth incorporating. FFXI has a lot of music that would sound nice, say, for a diplomacy screen...

Here's music I think would be a good choice, although admittedly it does rely a little heavily on FFXI music. I think that each reflects the culture group accurately at that point in time, rather than based on story progression, but I realize you already have a full track list, so I can understand if you'd prefer to stick with that one...

AncMEFull -> Guadosalam, X-2
AncGRFull -> Batallia Downs, XI
AncECFull -> Tipa, CC
AncORFull -> The Greatest Warrior, VII
AncNAFull -> Cosmo Canyon, VII

MidMEFull -> Rabao, XI
MidGRFull -> Backborn Story, T
MidECFull -> The Castle, VIII
MidORFull -> Windhurst, XI
MidNAFull -> Selbina, XI

IndMEFull -> Mt. Gagazet, X-2
IndGRFull -> Matoya's Cave, Black Mages Mix
IndECFull -> Bastok, XI
IndORFull -> Black Mage Village, IX

TechnoMixFull -> Regeneracy, XI
StarsFull -> Silence and Motion, VIII
SmashFull -> Battle with Seymour, X
NightengaleFull -> Airship Medley, VII, VIII, IX, and XI
ModernFull -> Still More Fighting, VII

Now, to explain a bit further about these songs...the ancient ones seem pretty self explanitory. The Greatest Warrior shares the tune of Cosmo Canyon, but has a more Asian sounding style. Cosmo Canyon's Native American style made it perfect for America in the Ancient age.

In the Middle Ages, the reason Selbina is chosen for American civilizations is because it's reminiscent of music associated with the first European colonizations of America. Although this does not relate directly to any Final Fantasy storyline, neither was there a Final Fantasy game reflecting American colonization, the most logical choice given the themes available.

As for Backborn Story, I'm really not too attached to the minute long piece from Tactics...my brother recommended it for me, so I put it in. If you have a more logical concept, don't hesitate to bring it up.

In the Industrial age, Black Mage Village is still used, but for the Asian culture group, which it better relates to (Windhurst and the Forbidden Lands both seem well summed up by the piece...). Battle with Seymour, which sounds decidedly Modern, probably should also be placed in the modern music. As for Matoya's Cave, I admittedly do find that to be somewhat difficult to grasp, but it represents the union of medieval concepts and modern technologies that define the civilizations in the culture group. Please note that despite the song is performed by the Black Mages, it is actually fairly tame.

For TechnoMixFull, while it does say "Regeneracy, XI", this is merely the most up to date version of the Prelude, not an attempt to change the song. Silence and Motion, as you probably don't know, is the theme for Esthar, and among the most underrated songs in Final Fantasy. Played for about 5 minutes in FFVIII, it sounds very modern, and it works well in the Civ III dynamic by shifting between a peaceful sound and an intense warlike one.

The biggest problem might be Airship Medley - the idea is to take the music from Highwind Takes to the Skies, Ride On (FFVIII), Hilda Garde III (FFIX), and Airship (FFXI), and play them end to end in one mp3. This solution would please Final Fantasy players who have their favorite games, but at a running length of approximately 12:30, it might dwarf the other Modern songs in its length.

I'm aware that you feel very passionately for One Winged Angel, but, sadly, it would most likely be far too distracting...

I'll put in a Zip file with the tracks listed on this post in my next post.

Otherworld, the song you're referring to, has the same problem as One Winged Angel...it's immensely distracting...

is the One Winged Angel the one that goes:
"Veni, veni, venias,
Ne me mori facias,
Veni, veni, venias,
Ne me mori facias"

I beg to differ. I hated nothing about Civ III more than the soft-ass Barry Manilow wannabe Elevator muzak s--- that Firaxis included with the game, and the songs I picked were to get rid of said Muzak tendecies, and I ain't gonna go put more elevator sounding music in. As a matter of fact, I'm working on a pack of REAL techno (that TechnoMixFull song they had must've been made by mixing a bunch of Barry Manilow and Perry Como crap) that I mixxed myself, hard rock and heavy metal music (I'm going to replace said TechnoMixFull with Iron Man by Black Sabbath, 'cause that song ROX!!). I don't find it distracting at all..... as a matter of fact, it makes the gameplay even more enjoyable for me. If you don't like it, then don't download the music pack or make your own. (I'll be making the title screen, intro movie and music an optional download separate from the main mod pack).

However, some of the songs you mentioned would be PERFECT for diplomacy music (which I don't mind being somewhat soft since you don't hear it too ofthen, and they better set the mood for the diplomatic exchange... i.e. I'd only use the harder stuff for if you're at war with the civ in question).

The music list I posted is final... Well, except that I WILL add the Heavy Metal intro from FFX, Otherworld, now that I know what it's called, since that song R0x0rs as well..... I might make it the new menu song....

Yes...perhaps we should give the players what they want...although I would like to do a study to determine the effects of certain music on Civ 3 players...it could prove interesting.

Anyway, FFXI, being an MMORPG, does have a disturbing amount of material that can be tapped. Orcs, Yagudo, Quadav, and Moblins, the barbarian-esque civs from FFXI, do have capital cities and simple government systems, so they technically could count as civilizations if we're desperate enough...

Another possibility might be the Zilart, a civilization from FFXI's past, but the biggest problem with this is that the only standout Zilart ruler is Kam'lanaut, who is also the ruler of Jeuno, so it probably wouldn't work out. Dynamis, the shadow world of Vana'diel, could also be used as a civilization, but, again, it might seem a tad desperate...

woohoo! no more schrappy (a mix of crappy and schit music) music! onwards, my rock/metal friend. i love sabbath and i have a playlist entitled warsongs (that i play civ with) and thats one of em. going waay OT but i cant help it. i love my music...

edit: maybe the Cetra could be a civ?

ANYTHING but the standard crappy Civ3 music is good. ;)

I replaced alot of the tracks myself for my mod in case anyone was interested:

Middle Ages:

Now "Nightengale Full" and "Winter" replace the Middle Eastern and European songs. "Crusade" by Cusco replaces the NA song.

Industrial:

Beetoven, Mozart and Mussorksky will be featured instead of the boring Industrial songs(except for that Piano one which I find enjoyable).

Modern:

Since the Future Age replaces the existing Modern era(and the modern era techtree is in the Industrial Age slot now)

I have replaced ALL the modern era tracks with Electronic music that sounds genuine futuristic

Included are "Valar" and "E-world" by Bassic, "Delerium" by Euphoria, and "Chronopolis"(my personal favorite) from Chrono Cross. Currently I have "Wired Circuit" by Modelar as the fifth song, but I am looking for another song.

Also I have out-of-game music playlists for the Non-European civs, for the first three eras(Oriental, Middle Eastern, Mesoamerican and Native American currently)

If we're going to use Otherworld, may I suggest the more tasteful version made by Nobuo Uematsu, his band the Black Mages, and another band called KAZCO? Instead of a Death Metal-esque singer, the singer is now a human woman.

Sadly, it seems mp3s, even when zipped, are too large to be hosted, so here's a link to it. If giving a link as such is against forum rules, please let me know, and I'll remove it.

Also, I've got complete leader and city lists for Orc, Yagudo, and Quadav civilizations from FFXI. I realize that leaderheads for such a thing would be impossible with Poser, so if you'd like to implement them I can probably make some leaderheads for them using the files from FFXI.

Well, If worst comes to worst and I don't have enough civs, I could create a Beastman civ that includes all the Yagudo, Quadav, Orcs, and Goblins.... I am thinking about adding civs from Fullmetal Alchemist, because A) I'm a fan of the manga, B) I'd love to have a "State Alchemist" UU, and C) doing a LH of Fuher President King Bradley would kick butt.

Hopefully, with Selbinia, the civs from FF I, II and MQ will be enough. I may go to the Seiken Densestu series for more, since the original Seiken Densetsu was called Final Fantasy Adventures or something like that, and the Seiken Densetsu (a.k.a. Legend of Mana) series have a lot of FF elements, including Chocobos and some of the same items and job classes.....

How about making "monster" civs where the units are the various monsters that frequently appear in the Final Fantasy series such as Bombs, Behemoths, Mindflayers etc.? They could serve as "minor civs" that are unplayable but can build and conquer settlements and produce units, same as the way the "minor civs" function in the Civ3 Conquest scenarios.

Now, there's currently 27 civilizations, out of 32, right?

Perhaps an idea would be to make scenarios using the Final Fantasy mod with slight modifications based around each Final Fantasy game...wasn't this considered in the past?

Yes, there's a guy called Magus77 who's working on a FF VII scenario, and I've been funnelling all my FF VII graphics that I've made for this mod to him. He actually made a FF VII large world map already and He's using it to build a scenario. In the meantime, I want to get this mod finished before I start working on scenarios.

aherm: once again, how bout the Cetra? they'd make a good civ, with all the magic and warrior -manship rooted in their history
