The last Heartbreakers album was in 2001 (The Last DJ). Since then Petty had done a solo album (Highway Companion, 2006) and a Mudcrutch album (Mudcrutch, 2008) but ... just wow!

From the email I got:

Spoiler :
We are very excited to announce the upcoming release of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' The Live Anthology, a multiple disc set of recordings drawn from thirty years of live performances. The collection brings together material from 1978-2007 culled from hundreds of hours of live concert recordings covering every era of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ tours and represents the best tracks as chosen by producers Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Ryan Ulyate.

Along with powerful interpretations of their own classic hits and originals, The Live Anthology features the band tackling some of their best-loved cover material, from classics to obscure beauties to unexpected adaptations. The theme from TomPetty.com Announcing 'The Live Anthology'Goldfinger, the Zombies’ “I Want You Back Again,” the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil,” early Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well,” Booker T. and the MGs “Green Onions”, James Brown’s “Good, Good Lovin’” and many more. The Live Anthology is the band’s story told through the music alone; the producers made no fixes or overdubs.

So, would anyone else be getting this? :)

You should really try to find a more productive obsession, such as one in academia, instead of something as completely useless as this.

OMG! OMG OMG!

I just think i sex-weed myself!

I'm assuming Mr. Petty is giving this album away since we have heard these works before. Why would we pay for something that he already generated ticket revenue from?

Is Tom Petty even good live?

He's all old and washed up now

IMHO, not much anymore. In the 70s and 80s he was GREAT. Just look at my YouTube channel if you wanna see.

If you really want to know, I think it's 1994 where things really changed. Just look up what happened in that year in regards to the band.

I've seen Petty around 6 times and he still puts on a great show. Moreso, Mike Campbell who can still knock it down. The thing I like about Petty is he knows the crowd wants to hear his great tunes and not mess around with new stuff no one wants to hear as Clapton and Dylan have done at their concerts I've been to. My favorite was with Pearl Jam at Summerfest with Kyle Orton throwing down waterfalls next to my buddy.

Who care's about Tom Petty?!

Sure he was okay in The Postman. And his appearances in King of the Hill are always great.

Man, Tom Petty's pretty cool!

Years?

So they finally admitted that they are out of idea and now talentless hacks (if they ever had talent in the first place).

On the official BBS, one or two people said it was probably just a stopgap release for now.

I've also heard that they're finally putting out the Santa Monica 1978 New Year's Eve concert. Finding one of those in good quality is like the holy grail. Pity they can't finally rerelease Pack Up the Plantation and Take the Highway on DVD, but wouldn't surprise me if it happens soon.

Also, got the cover which I like

Let's see...1983 I saw them in Tucson,AZ, 1991(I think) at Poplar Creek near Chicago and 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006(with Pearl Jam)and 2008 at the Marcus amphitheater in Milwaukee for Summerfest. Petty seems to have a great love for Milwaukee maybe because Howie Epstein was from there.

The Who and Stones are the only bands that even come close to this number of concerts for me.:old:

For some reason the site only lists up to 1999:

Long After Dark Tour
January 22, 1983 Arizona Memorial Coliseum, Phoenix, AZ
January 23, 1983 Tucson Convention Center, Tucson, AZ

Into the Great Wide Open Tour
September 6, 1991 Poplar Creek Music Theatre, Hoffman Estates, IL

What, like trolling?

I'm talking about her Aspergers obsession, azzaman. It's possible to control the obsession a bit, and it would be a lot better for her if she used her obsession for means that would help her, instead of sticking with a completely useless music band obsession.

Does it really count as "another" if its all just old material. Are they not still recording new?

I'm not sure.

This is from an October 2008 interview:

Spoiler :

WZ: Thinking again of all that’s happened in the past few years, there have
been the big career operations like the movie, the books, the Super Bowl
appearance, the tours, and, then, on the other side, you have the
Mudcrutch record and now percolating thoughts of a new Heartbreakers
record—how do you strike a balance between legacy work like the film and
the new work?

TP: The way I handle it is to always be thinking about that next recording.
I’ll tell you something: I think it’s very important now that we make a really
good record with the Heartbreakers. It’s been a long time. The vibe in the
band is that we want to go in there and do something extraordinary, create
some music that will make people sit back and take notice. We have a lot
of creative juice and don’t want to rest on our laurels. So that’s going to be
our big challenge. And like I say, if we’re going to take off next summer for
Europe, that means a lot of the Heartbreakers writing and recording is
going to have to be done this year. As I hear myself say it, I clearly have a
lot of things I want to do, including another Mudcrutch tour. But the next
Heartbreakers’ project is something that will get the attention it deserves,
simply because as a band we have more territory to explore. And, for any
band, that’s a good place to find yourselves in.
