Hi Guys,

I have an Athon XP 2500+, 512 RAM, GeForce 4 MX 64 MB. The graphics seem to be OK at first, but the explored terrain will be black out again soon as my units move out of it. Basically, I can only see my land and the quares surrounding my units. Is that the behavior of Civ 4, or it is another big bug?

Thank you for helping me resolve the problem if you can.

Sincerely,

Peter

That's probably fog of war combined with a too-dark screen. Turn up your screen brightness and see if you can see anything through the blackness that comes in behind your units. If you can see the terrain, then nothing's wrong with the game -- that's the way it's supposed to work. (You can't see units or new cities or terrain improvements in fog-of-war areas. You have to have line-of-sight, or be within your own cultural borders, to have the screen light up fully.)

Well, there really isn't an official statement that there WILL be a patch coming out this week. It's very likely, or Thunderfall wouldn't have posted the Firaxis email, but personally, I'd rather they take their time and release a solid patch so that we don't need another one in a few weeks ... rushed patches tend to break as much as they fix.

When is the patch actually coming out?i read yesterday that it was supost to come last night, this game is so buged that it creeps me out,i cant play it cause the sound disepears in the intro movie, and then its just gone...and,when i go back to the deskopt i cant even play winamp and i have to restart the machine to get the sound back, but i tried to play tje game without sound, then after 30 min it freezes :(

Its just lying here, looking at me:P i want to play it!! some minor bugs i can live with, but the worst?its been out a while now, they should at least give out a patch for some of the bugs,so its playable..

Its kinda frustraiting, and i know theres a lot of people with worse problems but god dam it...

Believe me I know how you feel. The bug plaquing me is that I'm not able to load up saved games. Imagine trying to finish a whole game in one sitting everytime you play or otherwise you don't ever get to finish the game. I'm a father and a husband so for me to spend more then an hour in front of the PC is a luxary I usually don't get. To put a finer point on it, so far I have never gotten past the Classical Age, I've started a hell of a lot of a games, but I'm never finished one.

I hope this patch fixes this bug because I know with 100% certainty it's not my configuration or PC (as a lot of people tried to tell me). I installed it on both my PC and both of them have the same problem, as well as my brothers PC. I reinstalled the operating system on one of them and put Civ 4 on a clean copy of XP with all the new drivers fully installed and it still fails to initilize when loading up a saved game.

This patch can't get here fast enough as far as I'm concerned.

Windows XP HE
2.66 ghz processor
512 RAM
256 RAM GeForce 5200 (I think) video card
200 gig HD (not anywhere near full)
run virus scan, spyware scan, defrag on a regular basis

Who still only has 512Mb RAM? 2Gb is becomming the standard.

The only problem I have with the game so far trying to run at 12X10... on a huge map that is all populated... it gets really sluggish and crashes to the desktop sometimes... I back it off to 10X7 with medium vid settings... runs beautifully.

Current rig:
P4P800/P4 2.8@3.2
Sapphire 9800Pro
1Gb Mushkin PC3500
way too much HD space ~1Tb.

One more box from Newegg and I will be running:
ASUS A8N-SLI/AMD X2 3800+
XFX 6800GT
2Gb OCZ PC3200
250 Gb Hitachi SATA2

2GB standard?!? What world are *you* living in?

It might be standard for top-line gaming rigs, but most machines I see are still 256-512M. 1G is starting to become more common. I'd like to get my personal machine up to 1G, but I'll be sitting with 512M for quite a while yet.

Take2 should follow Epic's footsteps...
They said the game and the later patches would come out "when it's done"...

So true. I'd call 512 standard for all but the absolute cheapest, crappiest systems being sold. 1gb is just now common in systems at retail outlets (generally those over $600). Anything over 1.0 is rare.

What many people's issue is here is that there has been

1) No official word of when a patch will be released. It could be in five minutes, it could be a month. There has been no communication between customers and the company.

2) No word on what it will fix. There are a large number of diffierent critical bugs that make the game unplayable for a large percentage of users. The odds are that this unknown patch will fix only a few of those bugs, meaning that the game will continue to be uinplayable, at least for a few months.

The question is, what are we to do? The game can't be returned to the store at this point. The game I have is 100% unplayable (and my system exceeds the recommended specs). I have a $50 paperweight.

Have you followed the tech forum tips to upgrade drivers and BIOS?

You yimply don't have enough RAM. The game is really slow with only 512 Mb.

Sorry to disagree, but on one of my machines I have 1.2GB of RAM. Game works for about 15 minutes then slows to a crawl. Unplayable. It's all I can do to exit the game--sometimes I have to use Task Manager to terminate the game process.

I have another old crappy machine with a 1.3Ghz Celeron processor and 320MB of RAM. Civ 4 works fine on it. I'm able to play a complete game without slowdowns, lockups, or crashes.

lol, ok this must be the first game that I know of that requires you to update your BLOODY BIOS!

Seriously, if it has got to the point were your considering updating your BIOS. Maybe you should seriously wait for the patch because if you secrew something up there then you really going to be crying.

Send it back to Take2 after getting an RMA. I'm sure that if you send them a polite letter explaining why you think you should be allowed an RMA they will do it. Don't rant.

Nobody should mess with their BIOS unless they know what they are doing! Yikes.

Absolutely agree. I can handle the add/remove programs list, even updating drivers now and again, but swapping BIOS ain't gonna happen.

I wrote 2k games and they were only aware of ATI graphics problems and not aware of any other problems ..so in other words write to Firaxis games support services and send a Dxdiag with a brief description of what is wrong with your game. Like one poster stated this is not a Civ4 tech site but everyone helps out each other quite nicely.

Is Firaxis that naive? I find it hard to believe Firaxis is that far detached from the Civ community. Do you really believe they were under the impression it was just "ATI graphic problems"? I don't...

I build computers and while that doesn't make me an expert, I can't come up with any reason that the running of CIV IV could be effected by the settings in your BIOS. IF you can run Windows without problem and if you can run other 3D games without a problem (they can be effected by the AGP or now the PCI Express settings in your bios) then updating the BIOS will be of no help and doing so could cause your computer to cease to operate.

I have only 512 MB and a decent processor but my video card is below spec, a nvidia geforce4 420 go, I put the omega driver from omegadrivers.net in mine and it works great now. I think its the best game ever.
