First Look: Scythia

Hates surprise wars? So, we have a very strong ancient/classical military power, which doesnt wage war? From what I have seen so far of the early game play videos, there is no other possibility until the medival age at least ...

Just kidding, cant believe that anyway. So if you have another warmonger in your neighbor hood, Tamaris will get them so you can play your builder play style.

She hates other declaring surprise wars. Nobody tells she can't declare one herself. The war declared by her due to her agenda is technically "surprise" anyway.

The horse archer probably don't replace any unit, it is a unique unit not a replacement unit;)

If it do replace any unit it is likely the slinger.

Seeing Tomyris kind of makes me feel bad for Monty. It seems like she would wipe the floor with him in early combat...

Agreed. She looks stronger than Monty. The new terrain movement restrictions favour mounted units and she has two kinds in the early game which come at half price in effect and one of them has combat bonuses. Barbarians can be disposed of quickly and then look out if you're her neighbour.

Probably not.

Nice catch! OMG, it's actually Slinger replacement! :crazyeye:

Scythians power is in the early game will Aztecs true power is mid-late game.

I hope that was sarcasm, They've got Archers listed.
Both warrior and spearman is listed as well. Ranged unit that replace ranged unit make more sense then replacing a melee unit with a ranged unit.

Did someone notice their cities' art style?
Did it appear before?
Is it possible that it's the art style for nomadic civs?

I am not usually a warmonger but Scythia is friggin' awesome! I might play them for the Kurgans alone - they look so good. Plus the ability to pump out a force quickly in the early game is useful also in defensive wars - imagine neglecting your military, getting DOWed by Cleo and then bam! - horse archers everywhere and Cleo goes bye-bye.

EDIT: although I agree that this civ looks a little overpowered. Early-game advantage tends to snowball.

I am sure people have noticed this but when Scythia gets 2 units, one unit appears in the encampment and the other appears in the city center. Neat solution!

She replaced Mongols. Be happy, don't worry.

Well, I don't think so. As there is Archer in the screenshot, slinger probably doesn't show up just because it is already obsolete .

Given that they allow such powerful bonuses is encouraging because that probably mean they have a good way to handcuff runaway civs and keep the game interesting into the mid or even late game.

I can't watch the video but I think I can explain the horseless resource thing; Was it ever said that horse Archers replace horsemen?

They could be additional units, as some UUs seem to apply - especially considering Horse Archers don't otherwise exist in the game apart from Barbarians. So If they aren't a replacement for the horsemen but come in addition to, then the resourceless bonus makes sense. This means, as Tomyris, you're able to field a cavlry force as large as anyone else could with the surrounding resources, and in addition be able to field your force of horse archers as well.

The above posted pretty much answered my question with that picture while I was typing. So yea, that explains it. Tomyris is going to be terrifying to start near.

......I feel like she is too white in appearance......

Also +1 to the horse unit that doesn't require horses is silly. Either
1) Give the civ 2 sources of horse for free
2) Strong start bias to always start near horses
3) Give the civ a tile improvement so they can "discover" horses (Remember civ IV mines could find iron after the mine had been built, this is actually also possible to mod in V just with the xml too)

What if all military units needed resources, that would be a boring early game with barbarians running rampant. Early game units should be resourceless in my opinion.

Also, have we seen *any* UU that requires resources yet? I can't think of any...

UU probably do not need resources for the same reason why they made unique districts priced at half.
