First Look: Scythia

Two units for the price of one? With damage bonuses against wounded units, that heal themselves after killing a unit and that do not require resources to be built?

This is causing me an asthma attack, that doesn't really sound balanced... at all.

Is it my imagination, or is Roosevelt in the Scythian video really looking slimmer? I think he just lost weight :P

Yeah, it's been confirmed a while back that they changed Teddy to make him look more like, well, Teddy Roosevelt.

did they call in indian though?

I mean, we 'know' Ghandi will be back, but have they let slip any actual Indian art styles or other stuff?

Yeah, it was in some screen shots in a magazine a while back.

But look at :49, red/brown borders and round buildings, so there's no consistency. But I think it's safe to say we'll be getting round buildings.

Hmm...

I can't watch the video but I think I can explain the horseless resource thing; Was it ever said that horse Archers replace horsemen?

They could be additional units, as some UUs seem to apply - especially considering Horse Archers don't otherwise exist in the game apart from Barbarians. So If they aren't a replacement for the horsemen but come in addition to, then the resourceless bonus makes sense. This means, as Tomyris, you're able to field a cavlry force as large as anyone else could with the surrounding resources, and in addition be able to field your force of horse archers as well.

the horse archer doesn't replace the horsemen because we can see Scythia using both in the video. Also the list seems to show basically every early game unit, so probably doesn't replace anything.

Also, more generally, the video said that the horse archers are resourceless, but that doesn't mean that horsemen are resourceless. So she probably will still have a horse start bias so that she can make horsemen.

now, more importantly, would be to ensure that the horse archers *count* as horses wrt spears; unlike civV.

This announcement came completely out of the blue! I'm surprised that they announced Scythia so soon!

Anyway, here's Tomyris:

Also, here's the symbol for Scythia:

I wonder what that symbol is... It looks like a sideways seahorse!

As for play style, warmongers are not really my thing - I never played as the Mongols nor the Huns in Civilization V, and while Tomyris seems really strong, I am not moved to play as her either...
But I will love having her in my games! :) Specially if she's a good and honorable ally!

Yeah, I think they are now beginning to polish out the general UI stuff, including adding icon graphics (which were missing until pretty much recently)

Well the first 8 civs were all from the same press build which is already like 1-2 months old. So these are probably from a more up to date build.

If you speak about realism, there are no such thing as "Horse" resource. You just take horses with you and grow anywhere you want. So, for example, you could view the Horse resource of local tradition of breeding powerful warhorses, or the like. In this case Chariots and Horse Archers just use common horses they grow on normal land.

Or you can imagine any other thing which would help your immersion. In ny way Civ resources are so high-level abstraction, you shouldn't bother.

Not that the Poster thread needed any more confirmation, but man you can tell they really used this image to come up with her look;

From the pattern on the sleeves, even to the Armor and Helm, which are taken from the adjacent male soldier. Pretty spot on, and well done.

Speaking of realism this reminds me of the funny fact how building a pasture (any pasture) gives you a Eureka boost for Horesbackriding. So you people learn to Ride horseback on cows or sheep xD

Well a pretty core component to riding horses is being able to domesticate them, which is similar in process to how you would for cows or sheep.

i hate this kind of ability: can build horse unit without horse. so unrealistic

It's not realistic that horse "resource" lives on one static spot on a map either. It's kind of the point of horses that you move them around with you.

Apparently the devs played Total War: Rome II. The flag there for the Royal Scythians is similar:

Or they used this:

I can't wait to see Aztec versus Scythia. Both civs have interesting dynamics since Aztec will declare war early, and Scythia would be the likely defender for Monty's victims.

Likely a Samber deer.

OH I can see it now, thanks! :) That is really cool!
It still kinda looks like a seahorse if you rotate it 90º though!

As for building architecture, the video showed two different styles for Scythia: first this style, and then this style.
Notice how both have the red-on-brown color scheme for the borders, likely indicating they're both from the same, or at least, similar builds.

Is it the early-game and late-game building styles for Scythia?
If so, early-game Scythian buildings look beautiful! :)
