First Look: Sumeria

This. Also his tunic looks more like a Greek chiton with an Assyrian dye-job than a Sumerian tunic. I love the inclusion of Sumer, but I feel like this version of it could have used more research and less fantasy. :( The Sumerians didn't glorify warfare the way the Assyro-Babylonians did, being more obsessed with bureaucracy and rituals; I feel like this civ could have been much better designed had they actually done some research. :(

Oh come on, as so many people have told me (in these Forums) It's A Game, Not History. Which is actually the universal excuse for We Didn't Do Our Homework, Learned Programming Not History, And Prefer To Wing It Rather Than Do Research - and don't know the original meaning of the Greek root-word from which History is derived: "To Learn By Study".

I hope we get a firaxis live stream with Sumeria. That would be super cool.

I'd say we get another livestream this Wednesday evening (CET), couple hours after Russia (Arabia) and half day before NDA falls. With last two revealed, as "usual".

Would you have liked Gilgamesh to look more like Eannatum did in the Civ5 Sumer mod? Not sure if casual gamers would like that look...In all three official game appearances, Gil has been portrayed with Assyrian/Babylonian looking beard. :(

Hmm. I was expecting a more science oriented Sumeria, more like Babylon. This seems more like Assyria. Still looks interesting.

Ziggurat provides both science and culture. Sumeria can build the ziggurat as soon as it have a builder.

Are you aware that Gilgamesh's complete LUA has 3 parts?
1) He can declare war on anyone at war with one of his allies without any warmonger penalties.
2) When at war with a common foe, Sumeria and shares pillage rewards and combat xp gains with the closest allied unit within 5 tiles.
3) Gilgamesh can levy City-State military forces at 50% of cost.

What part do you think is missing? That seems like a pretty full LUA to me.

source ?

Could someone please explain the pillaging in this video? When the city is captured you see the improvements getting pillage along with some building in the district. I don't think this is a UA or LUA as nothing was mentioned in the video so is this a general pillaging rule that's different than that of Civ5?

I don't think anyone can explain that yet. It's kind of like how Spain took over a city and its borders grew 2 tiles and spawned a unit in that FL video. It's a mystery.

Speculation but maybe there is a new mechanic in civ6 where some random tiles get pillaged when you take a city to represent the enemy engaging in a scorched earth policy.

Or, what was all too common, the victorious troops running amuck and stealing or burning down anything they found until their officers could get them back under control.

Throughout history, 'pillaging' was rarely a controlled activity - from 4000 BCE to 2003 CE in Iraq you could never be sure what would be left after your 'Famous Victory' ...

Looks like an Egyptian priest, to be honest. The shape of Gilgamesh's tunic is almost right, but Sumerian tunics are tucked under the armpit, not wrapped around the waist like a Greek chiton. Also elaborate wigs and crowns were a big thing in Sumer. Beards, however, do not seem to have been fashionable in Sumer except for occasional short beards. All in all, Civ6's Gilgamesh could use a little less Assyrian machismo.

Agreed.

Good point. I hope civ6 has this and what we saw in the video is this new mechanic at play. It would make sense from a gameplay perspective as well. Players could not just take good cities and instantly get all the yields for themselves. It would help stem the runaway civ.

Declare war on my nether regions daddy

Gilgamesh X Tomyris new ship. Cleopatra will probably try to throw a wrench there tho

"When humanity wakes at the Dawn of Time in Civ, Gilgamesh has been up for half an hour already, has made you breakfast, built a Ziggurat, hitched up the War Cart, and is ready to go."

I really like this quote from Pete Murray. ;)

I dunno about him and Tomy. It will start out well enough, but he's going to jump in on someone else's war and she isn't going to like it.
