First Monarch Game -- save included

Yeah, I fight lots of wars with swords. I fight quite a few with archers, too. From everything I've read around here, the AI values offensive units quite differently from defensive units, so even for a builder, it makes sense to build more offensive than defensive units, if only for the deterrent effect.

I guess that makes sense. I've definitely cut down from what I used to do, which was get 2-3 spearmen per city, no matter what. Now that's just ridiculous.

I might still get too many, but spearmen just seem convenient to me.

I think I will say do not build a single spear at Monarch. The Ai is no threat to you at that level. Wait for pikes, they actually can defend some, spear cannot defend anyway.

Speed Beast did not show this was an AP game.

It does show that only 8 civs are in a huge map, that is very low as it normally would be 16.

If you are still in the AA and the French are nearly into the IA, you have made a lot of mistakes. Nav is one of the last optional techs in the Middle Age. I did note they have Crusaders, so your spears are toast.

When you could see snow just past Berlin, why did you expand that way? If you fill the land N-S they could be stopped from crossing to plant. They would have to use galleys to expand back there, by then you should be able to whack them.

It does seem unlikely that the AI could get that far in 170BC on Monarch. They are not going to be very large as the are surrounded by Khan.

I always suggest players stay on std maps, until they are well versed in the game. I would say, until they are beating Emperor. That shows thy have the basics down.

Huge maps are too easy for humans, unless they add something in to offset it. Having half as many civs in the game only makes it easier for the player.
