Fix-It List

I have an issue where on both CivIV and CivIV BtS it tells me that it failed initializing Python. I tried downloading a new Python software, but that didn't help. Could it be the edition of Python I downloaded? I downloaded 2.6.1. The reason I had to download it in the first place was that when one of my friends said I needed more memory, they went through my Control Panel and deleted things that they thought were "unnecessary"

Civ4 and BtS should come with all the required code they need - though you'll likely need to reinstall them - do the below and ignore the warlords parts if you don't have that:

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.17 (download it fresh from here).

Thanks for the welcome:), so even though i havent been able to initializa the game, the patch will automaticaly work on it or do i have to do any additional ste? And where do I dowload these patches?

patching works fine outside the game. Download the patches from here, here and directX9c from here.

just download them - they are either a .exe - then just double click - or they are zip files in which case you need to unpack them first and then run the .exe contained in them. In either case windows should do it automagically for you :)

Ok, I am having a similar problem as the play disc error...where it says the 2nd disc is the play disc...well, I know disc 1 is the correct disc, but when I insert disc 1 into the drive, it still gives me the same error...sort of.

I inserted the disc, it let me install the game.

After completion, it tells you to insert disc 1 again, I did that, then the box comes up with play, readme, etc. I click on play, and it brings up the small graphic with "Loading" on it and then it gives me the disc read error.

I tried reinserting the disc, it auto loads as it should, gives me the play button, but does the same thing. So...its reading the disc...but it won't go past that first load screen.

The disc is clean enough to play...and the disc itself isnt' faulty, I installed it on another computer, no issues.

I tried different discs in the drive, and I see no signs of a faulty drive. It plays movies and other discs just fine.

I even tried putting the disc in a Game Drive on my harddrive. Same thing.

My comp specs are well above even the recommended requirements. 3.0G proc, 1G RAM, and I have the RADEON X800 XT for video.

So can someone tell me what the problem is?

Thank you so much!!

I have Civ IV gold and my son unplugged the computer while it was installing. Now it shows the amin menu and says play. It does nothing when you hit play. It was only about half way done. I tried to uninstall it but there is no program icon. I deleted the program file and it still says I cant finish installing it or unistall what is already done. What should I do next? I have Colinization installed and it works fine.

For some reason, it won't let me uninstall CivIV from the Control Panel, it tells me I need to talk to Firaxis, but of course, Firaxis doesn't have a "how to uninstall Civilization IV" page. Also, I bought my computer in Spanish (I live in Peru) and I am still trying to change it into English. I have succeeded in being able to make Civ, and other apps run in English, but the display of Windows Explorer, etc. is still in Spanish. I honestly don't know how to get Windows Explorer to show hidden files. I don't know if anyone can help me there :( Am I able to uninstall CivIV manually? As in, w/out the control panel?

Another thing has just popped up as I try to find ways around the uninstall-ability of the files: It keeps telling me it's opened Civ just as I try to move it to the Recycle Bin. It tells me to close it or something, and then try again. When I try again, it still won't work. Any way to get around this?

It has now let me delete the last file from Civ4, but I still can't reinstall it. Is there something that must be done so that it can be reinstalled?

What are the installation information folders? I didn't see them while manually deleting files. I don't remember the last time I shut down the computer. I believe I did so last Sunday, but I was on a school trip for the last four days and didn't have time to try anything new on this. I just tried uninstalling Civ4 Vanilla, and I got the same error message as before. No, I don't know how to edit the registry manually. I'm still trying to figure out what some things in English are in Spanish. Still haven't figured out how to change the language. (Unrelated topic)

Yeah, I deleted all the files, but it won't let me uninstall the application of Civ. Will it let me reinstall Civ now that I've deleted just the files or must I do something more?

I tried reinstalling and it said that it couldn't because it was installing a previous version of Civ (1.62) and I needed to uninstall the current version (1.74). The problem with this is that the control panel still won't let me uninstall the normal version. It shows the same error message as before :(
