What about adding flagships to enhance the naval side of the game?

Basic overview

1) Only one flagship allowed in play at time. If sunk, then you may start building a new flagship.

2) The flagship would be a more expensive and beefed up naval unit of the relative era.

3) This unit would act as a "Great Admiral", i.e. combat bonus of 25% to all units within a 2 tile radius.

4) Perhaps a flagship can only be built after at least one naval unit has reached 30XP or something along those lines. (The civilization has to have some maritime history before it gets a flagship)

There are various historical mega-ships which the units could be based off.

Ancient ~ Medieval Era: I can't remember the exact name, but while watching the History Channel (God Bless you History Channel!) there was a flagship built in the Mediterranean that was an 8 level Trireme. Oct~ something or other...

Renaissance: Man-of-War version of the Frigate

Industrial+: Yamamoto Class Battleship

What do you think?

interesting idea, I wouldnt mind some sort of naval great general, maybe thats how you could get it, take a general to a costal city and an option is build a flagship, and you pick what type of ship it is.

But I think by the late Era Aircraft carries should become the flagships, something like the USS enterprise, mainly because WW2 was when Big battle ships we're proven to be obsolete thanks to aerial supperiority. It would also symbolise the fact the most important ships we'ren't the biggest and heavyest armed, which matches the great general, useless without other troops to lead.

Mid game, HMS victory better ship of the line etc..

Early the giant roman Trireams like you said.

Allow a Great General to embark and give his benefit to any ships in the effective radius. You can stack him with combat ships, including an aircraft carrier that's protected by a screen of battleships.

i'd download this mod!

@tenneral or whatever your name is, i don't think embarked great generals give off a bonus, and even if they did it wouldn't be as good as a flagship.

I'm suggesting it as a simple mod.

Has a preview said somewhere that the embarked general doesn't keep his area effect? It would seem to me this effect is already in the game, though he's a probably really slow.

I like this mod idea better. I would definitely give it a try. Though I think it would be interesting if his radius effect (while at sea) was reduced to a single hex/ship so its more like a flagship than an entire advanced fleet.

@Shoesled or whatever it is, if the mod is made the embarked general bonus could easily be as good as making a single great unit (as in the OP flagship mod).

Ancient ~ Medieval

Trireme = CS - 6 / RCS - 4 / R - 2 / M - 4 / Cost = 60
Octreme = CS - 9 / RCS - 6 / R - 2 / M - 4 / Cost = 100

Renaissance

Frigate = CS - 30 / RCS - 15 / R - 2 / M - 5 / Cost = 160
Man-of-War = CS - 45 / RCS - 22 / R - 2 / M - 5 / Cost = 280

Industrial ~ Future

Battleship = CS - 60 / RCS - 32 / R - 3 / M - 4 / Cost = 500
Dreadnought = CS - 90 / RCS - 48 / R - 3 / M - 4 / Cost = 875

or

Carrier = CS - 30 / M - 5 / Aircraft - 3 / Cost = 520
Nimitz Class Carrier = CS - 45 / M - 5 / Aircraft - 5 / Cost = 900

In the Industrial Era, a civilization would be able to build either a Dreadnought or a Nimitz, but not both at the same time.

Further thoughts on this subject, maybe have a high level promotion called "Admiralty" which would give a ship the bonus stats of a General, without having to embark a General.
