I guess there isn't much content to this, but I just want to express my sympathy for all of those in Europe who are dealing with the massive flooding. :(

Also sympathy to those in SE Asia and China, where the death toll has been very high as well. :(

It's weird... Half the world is flooded and here it's so hot...

Hopefully the strange weather is over . We don't need any more of this. :(

Plant more trees, Pave less ground.
And quit building in the flood plain.

IIRC, It's related to the El Nino, which mainly affects Southern Pacific.

Th weather was ****ty the past few weeks here.

It was sunny today and I went to the beach :p

The weather is really weird. In Switzerland,it has snowed,in Central Europe there were floodings...it's said that it's not worse than the other years in general but that there are more and more violent events like that.

Its related ti El Nino which has knock on effects around the world. It has causes the Cold weather and rain that would normally follow the Gulf Stream north of the British Isles (and sometimes over it :( ) to head South and over Europe.

Also because of this band of cold weather and low pressure the High pressure that usually brings the British summer has stayed at the Azores. So we have had one hell of a cold summer!

It floods arounf here all the time but because i live in the country the water will soak into the ground but because of all the build up areas in towns they flood ;)

You can say that again. It's 25 C here and ppl are sweating like pigs,
Normal temperature should be ~18.

El Nino has been going on for thousands of years,
Deforestation and pavement causing fast runoff
is intensifying the flooding.

You can't control El Nino, you can control the
rain runoff speed.

Sage advice, all three items.

It's extremely strange for Europe to have ANY flooding. In Asia it's simply monsoon season for most the summer. They have 2 seasons there Wet, and Dry. But when the last time Europe has had a major flood like this???

Yes, and my friend is there on holiday - bad timing really...At least at the end of the week he can forget about it.

Well, as a most likely victim of the flood, I´ll post some more information.

Huge regions of Germany, Austria and Czechia are in a State of Emergency. For hundreds of thousands of people this is a major catastrophe so far and it´s still not over.

As I live in a endangered city myself, we have started to take the first precautions today, packing the most neccessary things and listed all belongings. The first flood wave is expected to arrive here tomorrow, but at least 3 more are on their way. And if one has seen the horrific pictures from Prague and Dresden as well as all the smaller towns, one sure has reason to be scared! :scared:

I still am pretty confident, but I also hope as much.

Here are a few links on the topic:
CNN latest news, pictures ...

CNN on scene in Prague
CNN Germany (Dresden)
CNN Austria
Yahoo! #1 Czechia (Prague)
Yahoo! #2 Germany (Dresden)

And a small pic of the rising level of the river Elbe, where I live:
wasserstand239.gif

Thats a rise within the last 4 days from 2m (6,56 feet) to 5,22m (17,12 feet).

So, if I suddenly stop posting for a few days, that might be the reason.
:(

I wish you the best, Lucky!

They said on TV that Magdeburg may be severly hit by the floodings, but it is not definetely clear. So there's some hope.

Well, unlike most other big rivers (the Elbe is among the top 5 rivers in Europe, btw) the vast regions of floodplains have not yet been destroyed or cut off from the river, so there is a rather larger area where the water could flow. And Magdeburg itself has not only the main stream, but a sidearm of the river and a wide channel for the river to flow around the city. The appropriate weir will be opened tomorrow (today ;)) in the morning, giving a rather large relief, but no one knows whether that will be enough.

They expect over 8m by Saturday or Sunday, until that mark, we shoud be pretty secure, but who know if the embankments will hold.
:(

Good luck, Lucky. :)

The flooding in Europe is incredible. It reminds me of the great floods we had in 1993 when the Central US was underwater. :(

Summer weather has been wierd here to. Nebraska started off the Summer with it being the hottest and driest on record with an unusual amount of wildfires, but now it suddenly is cooler and we had like 4-5 inches of rain this week. Soon temperatures are suppose to rise back into the upper 90's this weekend, with little rain in the long-term forecast. :(

I heard that the usual water capacity of the Danube was 150 million cubic metres, but at the moment, at least yesterday, it was 4,000 million cubic metres. F*ck me!

I've got a friend going away on holidays across Europe in two days. Nearly all his stops have been hit by floods.

I really hope the town of Praque, especially the Old Town area, is not damaged too badly, and can easily repaired. Areas like that need to be preserved.

I hope your namesake holds, Lucky. That's a terrible situation.

When I saw the pictures of Prague yesterday we immediately called my wife's family (in Poland, about 2 hours north of Prague) but were relieved to learn they'd moved eastward to relatives.

I love Praha and was very sad to see the stare and nove mesto (and mala strana) inundated. I hope they can salvage everything. :(

Keep us updated on your situation if you can Lucky.
