FM01 Team Barbarian OCC (Prince)

OK, I have it. 20 turns, correct? I should be able to play tomorrow night.

Any advice, comments, suggestions, etc. are most welcome.

Correct, 20 turns. As far as I understand it, it is important that the Oracle is built as fast as possible.

Though we want Civil Service as a free tech for it. So be wary to time it with the incoming of CoL correctly.

Most forests are already chopped. Maybe you'll have to calculate a little bit whether the next hammers go into a library or if you already switch to the Oracle.

It came to my mind that we're already quite late for an Oracle. Our Barbarian friends might help us with it though.

Memphis is still there, but we did not make any progress in taking cities. I hope my set of turns brought us forward a little :)
I think so! London's happiness limit is now size 8, and we have stonehenge online so any Barbarian cities that spawn (I'm suprised there weren't any in your turnset) will get border expansions.

Agree Pvblivs post above, Oracle is now our highest priority, but not before we research Code of Laws. If you need to know how many hammers forest chops give you so you don't go over check Ozzy's Forest Chop Grid for Epic. If Oracle will complete before CoL is in, swap production to something else at the last minute, e.g. a lighthouse would be useful.

I see from the screenshots that it will take 31 turns to research CoL, we should concentrate on reducing this as Oracle is a fairly cheap wonder so will probably take less time. So, chop a library, and configure London for growth and commerce. At some stage it may even be beneficial to run a scientist specialist, but its a trade-off between what the scientist will provide in beakers, and growing earlier to an extra citizen that can work a commerce tile.

Btw Pvblivs, was confuscianism founded in your turns? It would be nice if we got this, we could spread it to our teammates and get shrine income.

Hmmm I hadn't thought of this, I guess you need to consider how many turns Oracle would take with normal production versus how long it would take to research the Oracle, both taking into account of some city growth, and then factor in how many hammers are available from forests left in our chopping radius (not including the 4 in the fat cross for health) to decide where the chops should go. :crazyeye:

Well, in my test game with the same civs and difficulty it wasn't built till the 400 ADs from memory. Barb spawning is dependent on the number of unclaimed tiles, in this game we had low sea level, one less AI than normal, we only have one city and one AI has been eliminated, so thats a lot of unclaimed tiles for barbs to spawn in and harass the remaining AIs. Plus the AI eliminated is Asoka, so there are no more industrious civs left. I think we've got a good chance :)

Later we want to research to Drama for Globe, and get some military techs and units... HBR, IW, Machinery for Maces. I see Delhi like us doesn't have copper, hopefully both it and we will have iron. Will any AI trade with us? In my game I had to gift away techs before anyone liked me enough to trade. It might be useful having an ally or two we can trade with while we take on Peter then Monty.

I am away over the whole Easter Break (Berlin  ), can only play tonight GMT so I guess I'll be skipping the next round... good luck!

No. The world is not confused yet. Hopefully we will manage this :hammer:

Berlin... well the world is a village. It'll be long before I come to Manchester again though...

Duh, I just noticed you are listed as being in Berlin. Its a place I've wanted to visit for a long long time. Weather forecast for the weekend looks great too. :D

Any advice on cool places to visit/things to see that might be off the beaten track a little, not so much mentioned in the tourist guides? I'd love to get more of a feel for the place rather than just seeing the 'attractions'. And in that vein, I am going to check out one club while I am there, Panaroma Bar I think Friday for The Orb

Never heard of Panorama Bar... What club you should go to always depends on the kind of music and people you want to meet in there. There are a lot of locations in Berlin worth visiting. Though maybe not as a "tourist", some may require some getting warm with it ;)

It's a little bit ugly in Berlin at this moment. Cold and wet... but you know this from Manchester very much I guess :D Hopefully we'll be luckier for the weekend.

Quite difficult to tell you things that are not adviced by a guide. Even the very nice little local with self-made beer in my street is well known by tourists (I was asked once how to get their by a larger group of female tourists ;)) though usually not heaviliy frequented by them. Typical tourists places are the Oranienburger Straße, the Hakescher Markt/Hakesche Höfe, Unter den Linden, Friedrichstr., Potsdamer Platz etc. Those tend to be overcrowded with tourists (Oranienburger especially in the evening as there are a lot of restaurants and a cocktail bar) but of course belong to the most interesting sites of Berlin.

If you want to go shopping on Saturday (all other days, that is Friday, Sunday and Monday the shops will have closed for the holidays) but not with that much tourists maybe it's worth to take a look at the newly opened shopping centre "Schloss" at Subway station "U Rathaus Steglitz" (reachable from Zoo/Zoologischer Garten) and afterwards the Schloßstraße or Schlossstraße (it's the same) that starts from there and goes north. That's more of the usual Berlin whereas the places I told you above tend to be tourists places. Though it's very nice to enjoy the spring sun in one of the cafes you'll find there. The best shopping location probably may be the Friedrichstraße and Potsdamer Platz.

I myself come from Potsdam (famous for Sansoucci), near Berlin, living now in Berlin though. I would not advice to visit the parks and castles of Potsdam just because of the parks. They're nice in summer to hang around and walk through. The Brandenburger Straße is of course very nice in Potsdam having many cafes to hang around and have some coffee. Tourists tend to visit the parks and castles here.

And now a tourists tip: If the weather is clear (not misty, visibility far) you should stand up very early and go the the Alexanderplatz for the "Fernsehturm". It's always very crowded with people who want to get in there so you have to be very early (it opens at 10 and stays open until 1 the next morning) to gain a fantastic view of Berlin from 365 meters.

If you can tell me some things you'd like to do maybe I can tell you some more specific things.

Now I've got to work some more ;-)

Those tips are great :) The 'Fernsehturm' Tower sounds like a winner, especially as weather is still predicted to be clear and sunny on the weekend. I think we are going to do a bicycle tour on Friday to get our bearings and see the main sites... should be ace. The wife loves impressionist paintings so will probably go to whichever art gallery has those too. Final question: can you recommend any restaurants with modern international cuisine, with lots of vegetarian dishes, classy but not too pricy. Hmmm I sound picky
(btw if you come back to Manchester can recommend lots of places fitting the above ;) )

rddc05, I'll swap with you if I have a chance to play tonight, I'll post a "Got it" if I do. If you get a chance to play first go ahead, but I think my 'tonight' in the UK will be earlier than your 'tonight' in Florida. I don't want to miss a round when things are just starting to get interesting :D

International? What's that? Well an excellent restaurant is the 12 Apostel (Italian) at Savignyplatz or the Las Cucharachas (Mexican) or some Singapur Restaurant in the Oranienburger Str. Or bavarian food (international if you come from Berlin not from Munich ) near my flat in Güntzelstraße the Hell oder Dunkel with a great variety of German food and self made beer (that is the "hell" or "dunkel").

Neither is too pricy, the first one may be the most expensive though having moderate pizza prices (like 10 euro) but drinks are quite expensive. The last one has very good prices for the food and drinks they offer.

Concerning veggy food ... ummm ... no idea man ;) Prussia has got beautiful woods  Well to be honest. Maybe some Thai restaurant like a very excellent one between Hakescher Markt and Alexanderplatz (railway stations) in the street that goes in parallel left of the rails (in the direction Hakescher Markt->Alexanderplatz). I've been there some 2 years ago, don't know if it's still there but it was great, especially what they made of the veggys. Some kind of Origami... :)

If you like impressionists you may want to visit the "Alte Nationalgalery", at the other end of "Unter den Linden" (the one end is Brandenburger Tor, this other is near "Deutsche Oper" or "Pergamon Museum"). This is truly one of the galleries I like best.

Cool. Cheers. btw other clubs I'm considering based on whos playing are Maria am Ostbahnhof & Watergate. Club der Visionaere on Flutgraben looks really nice to spend an afternoon chilling by the water too. [/offtopic] :)

Watergate is really great. It's one of the most relaxing D&B clubs. Though only on one floor. The other one I remember being quite queer. But I've been there only once...

OK got it, cheers rddc, will be playing over the next few hours.
Pvblivs: The wife says thanks for the "Alte Nationalgalery" tip. :) Btw I think "relaxing D&B" is an oxymoron. Minimal techno/house is my thing, lots of cool german labels Kompakt, Karloff, BPitch Control, Triebstoff, Traum Schallplatten, Shitkatapult, Pokerflat, Playhouse etc. Thu/Sat at watergate is more that style, Friday DnB, from what I can make out from the website in german

:) I don't know anything of it, friskymike. Just like hanging around with such music, but it's only one kind of music I'd like to listen to. And Berlin supports everything ;)

OK back on topic :mischief:
Turn 110 (600 BC)
MM London for hammers and commerce, slowing growth as WW will be a problem. Stop some cottaging/roading workers and send them to chop forests immediately for a faster Library.

Turn 111 (580 BC)
Send our harrasing warrior to Delhi, as there isn't really much he can do, and units in enemy borders adds to WW. Maybe we can upgrade him later in Delhi, will be intersting to find out if we can.

Turn 113 (540 BC)
London finishes: Library
Start running two scientist specialist and re-micromanage.

Turn 114 (520 BC)
London begins: The Oracle
WW also increased, MM for slow-growth as size 4 is now our happy max
Decide that if we want to make sure we get the Oracle in a reasonable amount of time we will have to chop two forests in our fat cross for the 90 hammers. Do not chop the last two as we may need the health later! (don't forget there is a fish just outside our borders we can send a workboat to later)

Turn 118 (440 BC)
Merit Ptah (Great Scientist) born in London

Turn 119 (420 BC)
London finishes: Academy
This has a big effect on reducing the turns to research CoL

London grows: 5
We have one unhappy person and are running -1 food for a while

Turn 130 (200 BC)
Tech learned: Code of Laws
Confucianism founded in a distant land
Confucianism has spread: London
OK those messages from the autologger are just weird :crazyeye: It must be confused like us
We revolt confusedly so our people are happier.

Turn 131 (180 BC)
Research begun: Sailing
So we can build a lighthouse for +2 food and have some trade routes.

Turn 132 (160 BC)
London finishes: The Oracle

Turn 133 (140 BC)
Tech learned: Civil Service
London begins: Confucian Monastery
For the +10% research which will be useful, lighthouse should be next while we wait for theatres/Globe. We also revolt to bureacracy and our confused paper pushers rejoice!

Turn 134 (120 BC)
London's borders expand
Xi Ling Shi (Great Scientist) born in London
A Great Eng to help Globe would have been nice... oh well... added to London as a superspecialist for +1 hammers +9 beakers which is nothing to sneeze at!

Turn 135 (100 BC)
I played an extra 5 turns to finish the Oracle.
I reactivated our confused missionary, for rddc to decide what to do with, there is a barb city spawned to our south we could spread religion to, or we may want to save the missionary for future use on Peters cities once we help the barbs take them, but that could be a while.

Spawned city of Mycenian, note obelisk from our stonehenge so its borders will grow, great idea JerichoHill
If our workers have nothing to do they should road down there and help the barbs clear the jungle.
fm01_bc100_myc.JPG

Sailing is due in two, we need to get to Drama for Globe to stop the WW. When Alphabet comes in check for trades with Washington/Hatty, we may need to gift them a tech before they trade with us, up to the player at the time if they think its worth it.

One of our grasslands and all the plains around London should be irrigated now we have CS so that once we get Globe, we can grow London and get a few more specialists working to generate great people. Other grass can get a cottage I think. Also I think the gold mine should finish this turn so London can be allowed to grow again.

Have fun rddc :)

Roster: (20 turns each)
Friskymike - just played (swapped with rddc05)
JerichoHill - warming up
Pvblivs
rddc05 - up now
open slot - still happy to take a lurker on if any want to join!

Good luck while I'm away team, I'm back on Tuesday. Once we get Globe to eliminate the WW we should aim for some stacks of Cats/Maces (provided we have Iron... otherwise it'll be crossbows!) and a few Horse Archers to help the barbs take some of Peters cities. In the meantime we can use our workers to help any barb cities that spawn develop.

btw we could get globe quicker by letting London grow into unhappiness then whipping it away... I'm not sure when the best time to start growing it is though?

:woohoo: Great set of turns! Now that we achieved our ancient time goals we can truly push things forward. Maybe we can also trade for some horsies. Horsies would be great to escort some of our barb friends so that they'll be better in taking cities.

Have fun in Berlin!

Cheers.
Our recent border expansion captured horses, gold and fish which are all useful. We can't trade with the barbs as their is no way to contact them in the diplomatic screen. We could trade with Hatty once we get sailing, maybe some healthy resources for some happy resources.

Great. I didn't recognize thoise horses. Then we'll have the ultimate chance to escort Barbarians (as long as they're on foot) and kill who stands in their way :) I'm really looking forward to our building the Globe Theatre!

What I recognize: I would rather build cottages on plains then on grasslands and irrigate the grass. When we want fast growth, we cannot achieve this with irrigated plains or cottaged grasslands. The result once we're grown to full size after all is the same. Only the way to the max could be faster.

Read Fox-03 on specialization for this :)

Maybe it's too late for that in this game though... We would not want to irrigate already improved villages or towns.

Me too, the WW was really annoying in my turns and will only get worse. I reckon we should let London grow while we are researching Literature, it would grow into unhappy while we research Drama, then we can whip some lazy citizens away for the theatre, and get the cultural slider into play to let us grow as large as possible to whip Globe earlier.

I read the thread, and am not convinced, I think the correct answer like most things in Civ is "it depends". Eg. at the beginning of the game, I think cottaging the two grasses was the best thing to do so that we could begin to work the cottages while still growing for more commerce and science sooner. More food wasn't needed then as we would have gone over our happy limit. I think in our position now though what you suggest is best. So; irrigate the two grass tiles and cottage the river plains. The farmed plains can be changed later to whatever we need at the time, although I think we will need the farms for specialists after Biology.

Sorry I didn't have a chance to get my turns in last night. Should be done tonight and will post an update.

If I'm not mistaken, we can go directly from Alphabet to Drama. I will set production to beakers after alphabet, the tiles for growth/commerce and whip the GT as soon as is feasible.
