For those without the game, this is for you

Just got back to this thread after a day out, and lovin' how it's progressed. Still another week before I get my copy, but it's great to see a game progress in such detail. Thanks Zany.

Ooh! This is cool. Good work Zany! :D

Would you be so kind as to name one of your cities (or re-name a conquered city) 'Provender Point'? I think it is a cool name :D.

First off, the Mongols have the cities of New Sarai and Old Sarai. To simplify, I will name one of them Sarai and the other one Provender Point. I will take the typical screenie of the city once I conquer it, and then many as the city grows again and gets improvements that show up on the terrain.

I don't have any screenies, because I don't have anything to show for the progression of the game since the last post. I got Huayna Capac to convert to Judaism, and he has become quite a strong ally. All of the sudden that snooty Napoleon, refusing to be my friend, has become very nice. I will sign a permanent alliance with him once I unlock Fascism. My civics have changed, I switched to Pacifism and Nationalism. It is 1750 A.D., I have 12 gold left (upgrading units later in the game is destructively expensive), but am generating +64 per turn. I am currently researching Chemistry and will complete that in 7 turns. Here all the units I have, and what I plan to do with them:

1 Great Scientist - The only technological rival I have is France, my future ally. So, I don't need to unlock a tech and decided to save him for another golden age.
4 Workers - I have at least half of my territory terraformed, and all resources unlocked and all cities connected by roads. I am now spreading out to eventually have every square with a road and an improvement.
12 Crossbowmen - These upgrade to Redcoats, but I still have a lot of them left. It would be easier to switch production in all 12 of my cities to Redcoats and save these units to finish off injured enemies than to upgrade them all. But, I've still got a good 10 turns before the war with Mongolia starts.
2 War Elephants - I have been shockingly lucky with resources, and ivory is rather rare from what I've seen on the map. These things are powerful from what I've heard, but they're about to upgrade to cavalry.
4 Knights - Also in the process of upgrading thse things to cavalry, but focusing on getting as many Redcoats as possible above all else.
8 Pikemen - Soon all of my cities will have 2 Redcoats defending them. But I am already almost bankrupt.
1 Musketman - I skipped over upgrading pikemen to musketmen for the most part, but I am facing no real threats.
9 Redcoats - The Mongols aren't that advanced, so I could easily use these mainly defensive units to conquer Kublai Khan.
1 Caravel - I used this to escort some missionaries to the Inca, now it is just sitting docked.
7 Galleons - Just sitting docked until I invade Mongolia.

It's going to remain quiet for a couple turns more in my game, until, with a fully-upgraded army, I all of the sudden land at the far end of the Mongol Empire. But first, I have to get Napoleon to declare war on Kublai so their units will be distracted.

Has anyone else noticed that our avatars are gone? Is this like the postcounts thing a month ago?

And great gamelog Zany! :worship:

First, thank you every one for your compliments. Remember, I started out intending to let you guys decide what I should do. So, if any of you wants to see how using a certain unit plays out or a certain combination of civics, anything, just ask me. I could even just give you info on Civ IV in general, like promotion stats or screenies of modern ships.

Minor update for y'all. I keep upgrading my units, and I have set research at 10% (but somehow, I will still complete Chemistry in 1 turn). Then I can upgrade the last few knights into cavalry and finally invade Mongolia! Napoleon refused to go to war with Kublai, but maybe after I start it he'll join. I didn't have enough ships to get my entire force to Mongolia in one push, but then I came up with an even better strategy. Rather than landing all at once, and having to avoid making a stack of doom (that is now a disadvantage due to artillery collateral damage), I can land on this Chinese island right near Mongolia. Then I can bring over how many units are needed to Mongolia, moving conservatively and focusing all force on one city at a time. Promotions make a long, drawn-out siege difficult, so I need to be able to, when I start attacking a city, have the odds highly in favor me taking it in one turn. When expanding this screenshot, the edge got sort of cut off. But you can see my forces on the Chinese border of an island, Mongol territory at the edge of the shot, and the sea squares owned by my main port but the city just out of view.

Once the war starts, I'll take many screenies and update as frequently as I can, maybe even every other turn. I am the strongest nation on earth, and Kublai Khan is the second-to-weakest just ahead of China.

I'm playing on Warlord difficulty. And I like your game too, nice big screenshots. Well, this screenshot better be big enough.

EInvasionForceA.jpg

This is invasion force A, consisting of 5 redcoats, 3 cavalry, and 2 catapults. They are about to attack the city of Beshbalik. I had a larger shot, but the other half was cut off. I will post a screenie of the attack on the other city. The other half of the force, invasion force B, consists of 3 redcoats, 2 cavalry, 1 grenadier, and 2 catapults.

Right now I have to go, to make myself dinner. I've been so caught up in Civ IV, I forgot I needed food, nut just the citizens of Oxford. :crazyeye:

Good luck... I am currently playing a game as the Americans and I am preparing to go to war with Arabia to get some oil!(hmmm... sound familiar?)

I have a question about the Permanent Alliance thing, is it literally permanent? As in once you sign it you can never attack your ally again? Thanks for replying. :)

The Permanent Alliance is permanent, once you sign it you are allies for the rest of the game. That is why is occurs later on in the tech tree. It allows you to share wonder effects and line of sight. There is also a Defense Pact, much like a Civ 3 MPP in which two civs vow to defend each other, but it is automatically cancelled once one of the civs declares war on anyone.

So in 1820 A.D. I invaded Mongol waters. I got France to join in. After moving troops around in 1825 A.D., I finally got into combat in 1830 A.D. At Beshbalik I almost won, but their defenses are still standing. At Turfan I won and conquered the city, here:

ETurfan.jpg

I need another invasion force, so I am now churning out units in the homeland. Also, the Mongols built a city on some island far away and came back with an entire fleet full of units. I sank their fleet and all aboard, luckily, but it makes me wonder if they were planning on invading China or India, or maybe even me.

Next I tackle Beshbalik, then wait for a counter-offensive. I predict the Mongols will throw everything they got at me, then their manpower will just run out. Another unit will be produced every few turns, but at the end of the campaign it will be a cake walk.

1820 - I invade Mongol waters, and at the end of the turn Napoleon joins the war effort.

1825 - Units move around, at the end my stack of doom (Civ 3 strategis engrained into me) is barraged. DON'T STACK TOO MANY UNITS TOGETHER!

1830 - I capture Turfan. I realize that the French had a pretty good chance of capturing New Sarai, so I decide to rename Turfan Provender Point.

1835 - Beshbalik captured.

1840 - I garrison all my invasion force into Beshbalik, healing them all and them moving on Karakorum from multiple directions. I plan to move slowly and conservatively to each city, and then wait until my units are ready to swarm on it and capture it before it knows what's going on. On the same turn, I enter the Industrial Era and reach 10,000,000 pop. A second invasion force is the process of being built, while the last couple remnants not on time for the first wave get on ships.

Sounds like your doing better than me! Just got my game in a few hours ago, took me three hours to get everything sorted out to actually play a game, then the whole computer re-starts! Well, we'll see if my second try will do better...

Here is my last update of the night. In 1854 AD I conquered Karakorum, and in 1866 conquered Old Sarai. Karakorum is situated on an isthmus, surrounded by hills. It is a very strategic position, so my units can heal up and then strike at cities, taking them down one at a time. Just this last turn Kublai offered me 30 gold for a peace treay, but I turned him down. Tomorrow, I finish off the Mongols then aim at Asoka. India is the second most powerful civ in the world, then the world will be at peace, every state religion Jewish and everyone friendly, then I unleash my armies on the world!

Yes, I turned the tables on them! ;) But I am not pillaging any improvements for gold (it sounds like such fun to me) because I plan on rebuilding their own empire. Now I am officially done for the night. Tomorrow I'll try to rush right through to modern warfare, I know a lot of you are interesting in it, I am too. All the reviews focus on the early game probably because they couldn't get into the late game it runs so slow. :crazyeye:

Thank you Zany!! Reading about this game has made me even more anxious for my own copy to arrive. Yet, it also relieves my impatience by the same degree. What a great insight into the game. Thank You!
