For those without the game, this is for you

Nice reading a game, if you can't play one yet.
This story eases the pain of waiting...
a bit...
a little bit.

Thanks.

I just got a chance to peak at Civfanatics Forum now. Just to let you all know, I won't be able to get back to the game until about 5:00 P.M. I felt sorry for Kublai Khan, so I'm giving him a chance to rest. ;) Tonight I will finish off the Mongols and rebuild my army to take on India. At the end of the night I hope to be in the modern age, with a strong navy and air force (the reviews have not covered air power or sea power enough).

I'm anxiously awaiting this new chapter of the epic. :D

What type of file are you saving your screenies as? Try saving as a .png, because you can post large shots that don't go down in quality, like if you save as a .jpg

zany you're the man for taking time to do this for all of us who are waiting:D

You know, I have the game already but I still enjoy reading these posts. Gives me insights into gameplay aspects and strategies that I can try out myself. Good job so far Zany.

have navies become more useful than civ III? what are some late era promos? have u gotten anymore wonders? what color are u on the minimap? u seem 2 b doing well keep it up

EDIT: @finalhistorian. Navies seem to be more useful, though I am still not advanced enough to have all the different ship classes, like submarines and destroyers. However, the rock-paper-scissors system of combat in Civ IV implies varied and strong navies will be useful and necessary. Besides, me and Napoleon are at peace, Asoka and Qin Shi Huang don't like each other, and the Inca are all by themselves on their own continent. I believe navies will play an important role because of this. There is no such thing really as a late era promo. However, if you keep units around long enough you access more advanced promos. Some of the more advanced ones are higher rankings of early-on promotions, such as combat. Combat I and II are easy to come by, however IV and V will likely come about later. An example of a possibly late-era promotion is Commando (speed bonus and use of enemy roads). I am about to start building The Statue of Liberty on my largest coastal city. I'm not sure of its benefits, but a weaker coastal city was recommended to build it, so I trust the AI in Civ IV. And I am white on the minimap.

Okay, just got back. Here's an update on what I got done last night (I went back for some more, considering I'm such an addict) and early today. Some of the dates might be off though:

1874 - Kublai Khan asks for peace two turns in a row, each time offering 30 gold. Each time, I turn him down.

1878 - I got Qin Shi Huang to declare war on Asoka. I figured, China might spring an attack on India so they'll be weakened when I start the next war. And if India dominates China in the war (India is roughly tied for second most powerful nation on Earth with Napoleon, obviously behind me), Qin Shi Huang will only be all the weaker when I put him out of his misery.

1880 - Ning-hsia captured. So far my war casualties are roughly 3 redcoats and 1 catapult. However, that catapult I sent on a suicide mission to inflict collateral damage on the city defenders. For those of you who have read Sulla's Walkthrough, and I assume you have if you are reading this, I got the idea from his war on England.

1888 - Tabriz captured, it is on an island not far from the Mongol mainland. However, the snuck a galleon down to the Inca continent sometime ago and now have a city there. Huayna refuses to declare war on Kublai, so I guess I have to send a fleet down there to dispatch it.

1900 - Second Golden Age begins. The first G.A. costs two Great Persons of different types, while the second requires three, also all of different types. All Golden Ages last 8 turns. I hope each G.A. doesn't cost one more Great Person, or if it does, not four of all different types.

1902 - Kublai Khan asks for a peace for a 3rd time, this time he only has 10 gold to offer. Again, I turn him away.

1904 - Qin Shi Huang and Asoka make peace. No cities were captured, and I think very little fightning went on. My line of sight bonus in cities of my religion goes away with Scientific Method.

1908 - New Sarai captured. New and Old Sarai confuse too much, so I rename Old Sarai simply Sarai and New Sarai Provender Point. Therefore, I rename the city previously known as Provender Point as Turfan again, it's original name.

Sorry there are no screenies, but taking and saving a screenshot in the later eras of the game basically freezes it all up. However, I will capture a hopefully important and worthwhile pic as I invade India with much airpower.

I'm not sure about my specs, or how to check them. If you could tell me how, I'd be glad to find out. :)

But still, even on my computer which I am fairly certain surpasses the recommended settings, the game runs slow with more than about 10 civs. And by the middle ages I have to turn the graphics down as low as they can go, and even after that, the game starts driving you insane. I suspect either Civ IV is too demanding and all the beta testers and developers were playing on futuristic super-computers (which, of course, they were) or I just meet the minimum specs.

Now, I am ready to get back into Civ IV now. Tonight, the Mongols are eliminated and India will feel be bombed into submission! Everyone in the world hates India, so if I sign peace treaties over and over again with them, my reputation won't take a hit. Civ IV diplomacy has improved quite a bit.

Go to the My Computer icon (either on you desktop or in the start menu) and right click on it. Then select Properties.

Your general computer information (processor, RAM, etc) should be on the General tab. The more specific information can be found under the Device Manager button on the Hardware tab.

First off, my system specs: 2.60 GHz, 720 MB of RAM (I feel like I'm speaking another language), and the best video card I could buy, sorry I can't remember its name or properties or anything. So, I surpass the recommended settings but the game still runs slow. My computer isn't loaded with spywar, I run daily sweeps of both SpySweeper and McAfee, my system must just be low on memory.

Now, on the game. When I loaded it back up after my last update, Inca was at war with India. Either I asked Huayna Capac to go to war and he did it but I just forgot, or there was tension because of two Indian settlements on an Inca continent. Here were my stats at 1920:
Soldiers: 1,076,000, Rival Average: 625,250 (This is a great little feature IMHO)
Population: 10,601,000, Rival Average: 5,810,000.

Now, a timeline of events following:
1932 - Modern Era entered. The entering era graphics are really dissapointing. When entering the Modern Era, all you see is a black ink on papyrus-looking background image of a digital watch.

1938 - Qin Shi Huang declares war on Asoka, without my intervention.

1954 - Qin Shi Huang makes peace with Asoka.

1955 - Versailles built in Karakorum (under my control now, to remind you). The AI on lower difficulties is really bad at building wonders, they either pass it off to minor cities (as the advisors often to suggest to me) or never get around to building them.

1956 - My invasion force finally arrives at the Indian border. There had been a gradual troop build-up over the last 10 turns, and 4 infantry are still yet to unload and an artillery is on a nearby island in need of a transport. However, my invasion force consists of (counting the 4 inf. and 1 arty):
18 Infantry
6 Artillery
1 Bomber
2 Fighters
1 Carrier
7 Cavarly waiting to upgrade to Gunships once I discover Plastics and can build an Offshore Platform to access Oil.

This force is not enough to take on India alone, maybe I should call up some of the excess garrisons in homeland England. China has been at war with India twice, and neither of them has done any damage. Napoleon has a pretty big empire, but from the "attack" on Mongolia I saw he has few, and on top of that out-of-date, units. Huayna Capac is the weakest nation on earth, I can't even trust him to take on the two Indian cities infringing on his borders. I think I'll hold off the war a couple more turns to get some more Infantry guarding unaccessible cities down to the Chinese-Indian border, and I'll wait for those Cavalry to upgrade to Gunships.

Also, I've notice that the AI (except my surprisingly weak ally Napoleon) upgrades unit frequently. No more taking down 5 mech infantry to find a pikemen guarding the enemy capital.

Actually, I'm playing against Asoka. But anyway, he is doomed!

In 1973 I checked my stats and I had 1,677,000 soldiers. I estimate India has about 1,200,000. In 1974 I finally invaded India with 1 marine, 7 gunships, 6 artillery, 1 bomber, 2 fighters (I forgot about my air force until the attack on the second city), and 30 infantry. The first battle was at an oil well (I noticed as I parked my troops on the border, the AI did as well, expecting an invasion. Asoka must be pretty smart), and I pillaged what I think is their only source. In 1977 I captured Kolhapur, but in 1978 the Indians came and pillaged my only source of oil (out on the ocean)! I've really been lagging behind on getting screenies, and also playing the game. So tonight I'll press on in the war and take as many screenies as possible. Finally I am in the modern age, so I'll get some pics of planes bombing cities, the usage of carriers, and some tanks and arties.

Yeah... bring it on.... I really want to see a modern screenshot! BTW, As you got Versailles and I assume you build FP, what happen to your maintenance cost and economy as a whole.

Well, I didn't notice a big change to my economy as I conquered Mongolia, for I took my time. It was when I built Versailles I noticed my gold go up a lot. I am an economic powerhouse in the game, with like 6,000 gold (once I'm near the end of the war I'll switch back from Police State to Universal Suffrage and put it to some good use) and raking in from 400 to 100 gold per turn. I've notice the AI puts their science slider as high as it will go without them losing money, as do some players. I however, make sure I'm giving too much away. For example, when a tech is 1 turn away from being discovered, you have to make sure you're not generating more beakers than it needs. I will build the Forbidden Palace in Delhi once I conquer it.

The few battles last night didn't produce anything interesting, and didn't get anything good enough for a screenie. But today I'll just screenies of anything modern.

Beakers carry over from one tech to the next after you discover one. You don't need to worry about over-generation of beakers... Because any extra ones will carry over to the next tech..

where are the screenies, @Zany, you said on oct 30 u would get some that night. Then oct 31 u said u would take one of anything but there is still no pictures, and now its nov 1 ?!?!?!?!

Great tales Zany, thanks for all the hard work you put into this and takin the time away from playin civ to give us poor saps without the game a taste of the action!
