Foreign submarine in Swedish waters

the whole thing ends with merely establishing a "presense" in places the Swedes were not exactly monitoring before .

in emergency surfacing is there a need for seat belts ?

During emergency blow testing very few people are sitting down. Helmsman and planesman have seats, but I never noticed if they were strapped in or not...

A submarine is still a huge piece of machinery though, so it doesn't make the kind of abrupt turns that throw you around. Even the big leveling off at the surface is kind of like a ride in an elevator, though the torpedomen would probably say a faster than usual elevator.

The exciting part during the emergency blow is that the whole ship is shaking and you sustain the maximum up angle on the boat for what feels like a really long time. Plus everyone has seen pictures like the one Bhsup posted, so you know that you are a part of that...even though to be honest it looks way more exciting than it probably is. In truth I guess what made it exciting would be the monotony surrounding it more than anything else.

well , the pictures indeed kinda suggest the nose would be crashing down heavily .

speaking of angles ı have read that in a good dive all the plates and watercups will fall off the tables ; are such things common ?

Normally if you are going to be putting on that kind of maximum angle you wouldn't be having stuff out on the tables. There are normal evolutions that may lead to needing that kind of dive, and if you are doing something that might you generally would either avoid meal time or delay the meal.

Whenever the ship goes to sea one of the first things you do is 'angles and dangles'. You submerge, then dive sort of gradually and come back up kind of gradually...and everybody gets all the stuff that tipped over 'rigged for sea'. Then you dive and rise again, more aggressively, and again rig anything that tips over. Rinse and repeat until you get to maximum design rate of dive and rise. It's a fun time, as long as your division did a good job of keeping things rigged while you were in port. If you didn't it's a pain in the tail.

Washington Post said:
MOSCOW — NATO said Wednesday that it had intercepted a large number of Russian aircraft flying close to European airspace in the past two days, in an “unusual” series of incidents that brought Russian bombers as far afield as Portugal.

The aircraft — at least 19 in all — offered reminders of Russian air power at a time of the worst relations between the West and Russia since the Cold War. Russian military aircraft have significantly increased their activity in Europe since the conflict in Ukraine began earlier this year, with NATO scrambling to intercept aircraft more than 100 times in 2014. But a NATO official said the scale of the latest incidents was the most provocative this year.

Over the Atlantic Ocean and the North, Black and Baltic seas, Russian bombers, fighter jets and tanker aircraft were detected flying in international airspace, NATO said. There were no incursions into national airspace, a violation of sovereignty that would have significantly amplified the seriousness of the four incidents, three of which took place on Wednesday.... All this is sooooooooo 80s...

You dont remember anyone bombing Iraq and Afghanistan in the 80s?

thanks to Timsup2nothin .

as for the 80s ı remember the misfortune of having a chat with some teacher in line to buy milk and remarking the Russians in Afghanistan were so like Americans in Vietnam . Iraq was more like bombed by the Iranians back then .

If the russian planes were flying in "international space", then how exactly did the nato planes 'intercept' them? Does international space belong more to nato? :)

Or... would this be yet more propergandhi?

(liking the 'european airspace' too. I suppose half of Europe (Russian) is not having european airspace above it).

Well, see, you intercept them by flying to their location. Intercepting has nothing to do with whether the target you are intercepting is in your airspace or not.

You specifically asked how someone was intercepted if they were in international air space. I answered.

That said, no, it isn't really a matter of more right, but it -is- a matter of monitoring aggressive military behavior. Especially in light of how Russia is behaving lately. Do you not think it prudent to scramble fighters to make sure the Russian pilots behave?

I think it is careless and short-sighted to do that. Personally i would have pre-emptively ordered some tactical nuke strikes by now. Those pilots likely posed with airsoft guns while clearly away from their field HQ as well so caution is advised.

It is all part of a game so we know you know we are ready. Russia expects its planes being intercepted so it would be discorteous not to do it.

A very different matter is when national airspaces are invaded, then things can get serious.

I’m Swedish. I am not in the least afraid of a Russian aggression. But my most idiotic compatriots are – we may be the most Russo-phobic nation after Estonia. The Finns are cooler than us for sure. I’d say 90% of the Swedish pop is scared borderline shitless of Russia. It’s a tragic. Especially in the light that Russia has no interest at all in Sweden. What is the motive? It’s the first question in a criminal trial for a reason. What would Russia gain from occupying Sweden and Finland? Pine, Spruce and Iron? Russia has that a hundred times over already. And a border with NATO Norway – they would hate that. There is NO incentive at all. There is however a lot of newspapers hot for headlines, clicks and add-revenue. Bastards – capitalist bastards.

I’d be an idiot not to think Russian subs/aircrafts where not trying out our capabilities. We are the perfect training target. We are modern and we can’t really do much to retaliate. I say bring it. It’s training for us as well. Russia would have to vote in someone real special like Zhirinovskij to make me sit up and take notice. Even then I would probably well prefer to be quickly annexed by Russia than be the playground of choice for NATO troops to hold their ground. We all know how that ends up for the civilians by now.

This is pretty much what I'd like our dear newspapers to realise about the "importance" of Bulgaria to Russia (that is, none). And stopping our gas would be stupid and dumb.

Besides, Russia already has a border with Norway, through the lands north of the Wall ;)

Thank you for reasonable viewpoint. Don't take Zhirinovsky seriously - he is a populist clown and serves merely as Putin's pocket opposition. He has pretty much zero chances to come to power. And yes, what Russia doesn't need for sure, is a war against neutral country such as Sweden.
