fortress?

Nope.

Same ol' fortress, snazzy new design.

I noticed that some people here build fortresses on every tile along the border with AI.
Does it really make any sense??
Hence, when you start war what was your border will become a middle of your empire and it's just annoying to have a line of those fortresses on the map...
Personally, I almost never build any fortresses with exceptions of chokepoints maybe... It's always better just to have border cities with few defensive units and also some Horsemen/Knights/Cavalry/Tanks in them for defensive counterattack.
Military Units have much better use in cities especially if your goverment can make use of Military Police. Plus, you have to have a lot more units to keep in fortresses which can mean more money spend on defensive unit support than otherwise might be required

Well if playing a demoracy in the indust age with all the railroads with a two layer wall the there is no sneak attack that will catch your cities unprepared make sure to have those fortesses with barricades to stop cavalry in there tracks with a lot of art an a few offensive units and they're toast

I'll build fortresses at chokepoints, on particularly valuable resources and often I'll put fortresses on mountain tiles near border cities.. it's a valuable tile should any invasion happen I'd rather have myself claim it first.

if theres a city on a resource and the AI bomb it, does the fortress get bombed first, then RR then road? cos i tried this in my last game but never got properly bombed (only on regent) so didn't find out.

when the fortress changes in appearence, I believe when you hit the industrial age. Does the benefit change?

I believe each era has it's own fortress, not just changing in the industrial age. I'll have to check to make sure tho.
