EVERY ONE who is having this game crash their computer what is your PSU? I was Crashing all the time in diff. spots and at diff. lengths of time playing but then I seen that a low PSU will cause a crash!! so i went and got a power supply of 350w and NO MORE CRASHIN!!!!!!!!! :)

500W here. 3.2GHz. 2G RAM. Same problem as everyone on this thread. A $50 game that I can't play and a company that won't respond to it's customers.

Yeah, I've got a 350W. Nothing major, but it seems to run everything else without a hiccup.

I am having crashes when playing multiplayer with my son either over the Internet or direct IP. Both of us were able to play without any problems until recently. We can connect to each others game, but once we hit the launch button, we crash a few seconds later. The screen turns black and the Microsoft message appears. I don't know who is crashing, my son, me or both....

We are both using XP SP2 and our machines meet and/or exceed the specs. We were able to play for the longest time without any glitches and now we crash continually. We are using 1.52. I must add that I had downloaded and installed a few mods, one is Regiment and the other is the Canadian Empire. Any issues with those? Thanks for your help.

Well I was talkin to a local tech guy today and he told me that even if u meet or exceed the specs for a game if your motherboard is to old it may not be puttin enough power into your video card to allow it to keep the computer on. So if you meet all specs and still have crash problems it may be the motherboard..

Just a thought to throw out there

Eh, maybe. I'm running a Abit AI7. I've had it for a little over a year, I think.

Well R U trying to get a reply from the email support or calling them.

I call a few times and they help me out as quick as they could. I got the hole "Well try this........ now try this......... O that didn’t work well try this...... Well then send us your dxdiag and then your msinfo we'll see what we can do.

it took 7 or 8 calls but I finally got it to work. I called them today and asked if this was a common problem and the guy told me that it was rare. Now he did say that a lot of people were having problems with the games closing down to their desktop but to shut the whole computer down was not very common.

Well, it's nice to see that some official source is taking action on this.

As for me, I actually managed to play an entire game without crashing this evening. I'm not sure if this will work for EVERYONE, but here's what I did...

-Kept AGP voltage at 1.55
-Ran Windowed Mode
-Cranked my CPU fan to 4000
-Ran A Less resource intensive shell-program to replace explorer.exe

I actually made it to the industrial age before I had to stop playing and get ready for classes. Hopefully with this new patch I can resort back to explorer and REV my freaking video card back up to speed.

No, its the card. If you read earlier in this thread, BFG acknowledges that their is a problem between the game and the card.

Updated nvidia Beta driver, http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_winxp_2k_32bit_84.12.html Has updated support for the 6800 plus a 'load balancing' fix for Civ4 at high res settings.

Actually the beta is 84.20 and it's available at the nvidia.com website.

As for load balancing that is only at 2560x1600 resolution. That doesnt help fix our cards at all.

In fact after looking at the release notes for 84.20 I am a little disheartened that there appears to be no fix for the 6800 GT OC and Civ4...

http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/84.20/84.20_Forceware_Release_Notes.pdf

Maybe they fixed it and didnt include it (highly doubtful) maybe they fixed it and I can't read (maybe) Maybe it will get fixed in the game patch (hopefully) Shouldn't have to wait for 6 months to get this problem fixed. (definitely)

Well everyone as far as my post about 350w psu stopin the reboots……. I was wrong!! I tried to play a huge map last night and what do u know it crashed about 10 min later. I guess I will just have to wait for tech support to fix this problem. I just wish the makers of this game wouldn’t have rushed out the game and made sure the damn thing would work properly on all setups!

ARGH !

As I've state before... I have the 6800... rainbow colored checkerboard freeze have to power down problem that everyone with an Nvidia 6800 appears to get... downloaded the Beta driver mentioned a couple posts earlier for my Nvidia... no good.. played about 4 turns.. freeze.... checkerboard... power cycle to unfreeze....

SIGH... back to my Xbox 360 and checking these posts occasionally..

I am having all kinds of issues with a 56oo ULTRA.

I just got this card, I had an old 420GX.

For the first time on the secnond turn, I got the checkboard of all kinds of colors.

Also a freeze, where the game is visible, but frozen, and the black screen.

Any ideas/ I iwll start looking through the forums.

*still waiting to hear from anyone from the Vid manufacturer or the game programmers*

The only thing that I've seen that looks promising as far as a work around is loading an older rev of nvidia drivers.... ironic since in tech support first question always is 'are you using the latest drivers?'

This is from WarX <- the logic used to go back to the older drivers made sense too...

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=137370

The fix refered to is actually for a crash to desktop problem.. not the fancy checkerboard error 'we' get... but perhaps it would work... I haven't tried since I haven't had a single issue with any other games... but... I may get frustrated enough to downgrade my drivers...

It would be very sad if I was unable to purchase Civ genre games because of poor support. Maybe Sid will sell the rights to a decent company. Like Blizzard. Who support their games.

I dont think we could be so lucky to have Blizzard buy them out :(

I am depressed to return after all this time and see the same thread still going.

But hey! AoEIII is pretty fun. Best part is, it's worked non-stop for hours and hours right out of the box.

I had the same problems than most of you.Civ crashed and had to reset every single time I tried to play it.I tried various things like changes to the Civ ini file, driver updates,re-installing xp and took my computer to the shop where I bought it and they gave me a new GeForce 6600 but it didn´t help at all.The game just kept crashing.Couple of days ago I was desperate and updated bios as a last resort and it helped. For the first time I could play it to the end and not a single crash.Don´t know if this helps any of you but it worked for me.

Cheers
