Freeze/Crash/Reboot

Why am I not surprised 1 friggin bit...

Because we humans have this inate ability to know when we bring screwed with...or over.

Me personally, Im playing GalCiv][, its got these developers that actually listen to their customers problems and try and fix them in a timely manner (timely in the human timespan not timely in the archeological timespan.)

Haven't read this entire thread, since I don't like horror stories, so I'm not 100% sure if my problem was experienced by someone else.

Before the last patch I had no problem at all. Or rather, no more then others had with the buggy multiplayer features. However, since the patch in multiplayer games it often happens that either in-game or in the setup room I get a "connection to server lost" error, forcing me to reconnect to the game. This is merely irritating when this happens once or twice, but when it happens every few minutes (like today) it prevents me from actually playing. Even worse, 5 other guys I was playing a teamer with were forced to scrap the game.

What is causing this problem? I'm pretty lost here and am hoping that somebody recognizes this problem and knows what to do.

I have a geforce 7800, 1 giga ram, pentium 3ghz (i play oblivion at highest graphic level, so it isnt bad!).

After some time of play the screen goes black (no signal).

I've read and tried ALL possibile solutions on internet, but it looks like there is no real solution at moment, am i right?

Someone has solved in this way:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=146309

but not me.

I suppose the problem is related to overheating of the videocard, but i have set all graphic at minimum...

Someone can help? How is possibile that firaxis has put in commerce a game NOT WORKING?

I have really no words...

Alex (from Italy)

If so, try also the following:
- underclock your video card
- open your computer case and keep it open

Some consider this a symptom of inadequate voltage. The game works for the vast majority of people ... they have no reason to be here so they're unheard. If you have worked through the stickied Fix-It List and see no improvement, post your dxdiag.txt. Someone may see something that would help.
Do NOT use the Harkonnen patch you linked and do patch the game to 1.61. Do a complete, clean uninstall and then do a fresh installation and patch application. This is all covered in other threads here.
Good luck Alex.

I thinks that my problem is a problem of really A LOT of people, i've read A LOT of desperate message about black screen.
Explain me about dxdiag.txt, what exactly shall i do?

Underclocking doesn't help. I've tried it and it doesn't do anything.. The game just crashes like it allways did.

Well i have gotten it to kinda work.I noticed that the card (BFG 6800gt OC)was very hot when it crashed so what I did was put a big box fan and then left the side of the case open with the fan on the card.It will crash still but in the last 2 weeks it has only done it 3 times.I have even played games online.

I have been wondering if its a problem with card overheating.I have read some were its a voltage on the card but i have a 430 watt power supply.

It seems to be a common comment that these run very hot compared to a lot of users' previous cards. It's been reported that if you modify any of it's hardware (or even downclocking in software), you'll void the card's warranty. Reducing your ambient case temperature, as you've done, seems like a prudent move. When I googled "BFG 6800gt OC heat" I was able to read quite a bit of pertinent discussion on these.
Regarding voltage, does the documentation you have indicate specifically what the card draws in amps/watts/voltages? Details on this seemed harder to find. Your PSU will specify on a sticker what it is designed to produce (amps at various voltages). There are calculators on the web that will approximate the total draw for your computer based on all components.

I think alot of these problems are related to the graphics card overheating. After putting on a different cooler on the video card, I have had no more problems. I have done a review with pictures that can be found here. My playing temperature was lowered by almost 15 degrees C. Yes, this will void your warranty, but it definitely fixed the problem for me.

Well.. I have it working now, meaning that I have to alt+tab every once and a while. What I did was:
I set SetMaxFrameRate = 40 from the .ini file (as adviced by someone)
Then I shut all other programs and underclocked to 300 and 600.
I also set all options to low.
Hihihii!

I hate to be a bother, but I've tried to solve my crashing problem on my own, with no success. I have an ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 Pro. I've rolled back my driver to 4.12, use the Omega 4.12 driver, cleared the cache, uninstalled and tested the 1.52 patch. Nothing has worked: the game will crash ten to sixty minutes into a game. Any help would be appreciated. Before the 9800, I had a nVidia GeForce FX 5200, and the game ran consistently, albeit a bit slow - I know my ram is on the small side, but I don't think that's the issue.

Work through the bulletpoints in Fix-It List including
  • Update to 1.61 (latest patch)
  • June 2006 version of DirectX 9.0c
  • Disable audio in your *.ini and in the game's options
  • Ensure you're using the latest chipset and audio drivers
  • I used official ATI Catalysts through 6.5 fine; haven't tried since installing 6.6 (game's not THAT great)
  • enable "memsaver" in the *.ini (disables alt-tab)
  • make sure no programs are running in the taskbar or system tray (close internet if needed)
  • defragment
  • clear civ's hidden cache
  • Of course, enjoy snacks in moderation
  • update the microsoft xml parser
  • install the latest Bink on your computer
  • install the laster python on your computer
  • disable movies (you've no memory for more than a bare-bones game)
  • Lean video to low/low/low
  • Step to a less-than-standard map size (RAM limitation)
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I've done everything in the list but modify the .ini file, and nothing has worked. Where do I find it? The game continues to randomly crash to the desktop - it doesn't seemed to be triggered by anything, like movies playing.

Your dxdiag.txt did show some really old driver software, and one of the audios is noted as "debug" which sometimes will introduce a performance hit.

By default, civilizationiv.ini is located in "\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4". It can be deleted (and it's *.bak backup) if you suspect it's corrupt and the game will create a fresh copy when run next.

PLEASE HELP

At times this game (Civ IV) will run well for up to several hours, with only infrequent stutters. Then it will glitch and stutter several times during a single turn. The black screen of death can hit me in as little as 3-5 minutes of play time (the computer having only been on for 5-10 minutes total). Less frequently my graphics will shift to a "sephia/"rust" tone (everything has a yellowish/brown/bronze tone; and difficult to differentiate).

I've shut down all of the background programs I can (Microsoft will not let me shutdown "Windows Messenger-Not Signed In" {I've never used it, but can not remove it from the background}) I Have loaded the 1.61 patch...

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2 Ghz (1600 Mhz FSB 512 KB L2 Cache)
200 GB (159 GB available)
1024 MB DDR SDRAM
nVIDIA GeForce 6100 video card (drivers updated July 9th 2006; as were all other drivers)
Windows XP Home

I am set to medium video quality (in all) in the game settings
patch 1.61 loaded around July 2nd 2006 (I got the game in late May)

My disks are the ones with the "wrong" one labled as the play disk, but that was easy enough to figure out (I just switched disks when the first one did not work, and lo and behold!)

btw I have had not noticed any issues with my sound, infact one of the things that tells me that the game is still running on occasion is that the music is still playing, and often if that happens the game will come back from black screen, however, it is still locked up and will not respond.

I have been lurking around trying to get fixes for some two weeks. I have printed out and will try to set the .ini to 40; other than that I have no mods other than the 1.61 patch. The dang patch seems to have made things WORSE!

PLEASE HELP!

How do I attach my DxDiag? I saw some others did.
