I had a case where my units were lining my border facing off against AI units on his border. When I was attacking over my border into his, my units would get a +% bonus for action in friendly territory (it was some 59% due to wonders etc), but technically the combat happened on his territory, or did it?

How do these things work? Let's say I've got friendly territory bonuses and open terrain bonuses, and I'm attacking from a hill to a grassland tile across my border (rifleman vs rifleman), what bonuses do I get and not get?

I think there's 2 issues:

1. It appears to count some bonuses from where you moved from. Generals seem to do this (radius to the vacated tile, not the target tile), maybe more.

2. Those friendly territory bonuses are bugged. The AI keeps its 33% SP bonus for fighting in friendly territory a lot when it's spent the whole turn standing in my territory.

One time I tried to liberate Greece and later Songhai from Arabia. Even though I gave the cities back to their rightful owners right away, Arabia kept getting a 58% friendly bonus aganst me in the newly liberated tiles.

I've seen this, I *think* because there was an open borders agreement between us when the war counted (so my territory was friendly to him at the start of the war).

On the OP question: I think its supposed to only be for the tile the combat takes place in (GG being an exception).

I think that friendly territory bonus applies too when unit is standing outside friendly territory, but next to it.

I had this same question but in regards to all the terrain bonuses. Does it apply to the tiles you are attacking from or to? If you have a bonus for flat terrain (forget the name), and are in a flat terrain, but attacking a unit on a hill do you get the bonus because you attack from that tile or not becasue you are attacking into a hill tile?

It applies to the tile where the fight takes place - ie the defender's tile.
