pre-release info New Civ Game Guide: Russia

pre-release info
I thought it was a way of referring to people who may be inclined towards the ruling party of Germany during WWII without typing the name, but if it's actually in reference to Gen Z I'll feel rather silly...

Not happy with the Great Writers unique civilian unit missing. What a missed opportunity.
As a Russian I am very surprised that Imperial Russia is scientific civ somehow, whereas the France, for example, is not.

On a positive note, I am very happy about civics tree design. The westernization seems absolutely great from both narrative and gameplay point of view. The same can be said about "adopt serfdom and gain food - emancipate serfs and get production" civics line.

Persia - Mongolia - Russia line fits my "early war late science" playstyle perfectly. I was going to play Russia first in any case, but now I feel like it may be even strong option.
I do hope for Rome - Byzantium - Russia line for the future DLCs.

I think Bast is saying they this is happening, just with the sarcastic inflection of “not this/not that.”

Ah, I’ve never seen this used in print, only spoken. I assumed they weren’t a native English speaker lol
Sorry I’ve been spending too much time on TikTok lol

Is this the Unique Tile Improvement?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; the future age civs should just be the factions from Beyond Earth,
There were factions in Beyond Earth? :shifty:

I’ll say this. I don’t think Russia’s inclusion in the game was ever in doubt. Even people who didn’t think it would be included in base always thought it would be in Crossroads. But some people think that as delusional as they always are that by inclusion currently war crimes by the Russian state are approved or accepted. It’s clear that the game representation is a “modern” but historical Russia. A kind of hybrid representation of Tsarist Russia/USSR. They won’t of course talk about that.

The design of the Civ could, however, be used to point out the continuity between Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union.

The Hermitage remained a State Museum throughout the Soviet period.
Replace 'Serfdom' with 'Collectivization', 'Table of Ranks' with 'Nomenklatura' or 'Local Soviets'
Samderzhaviye can remain exactly the same.
Obshchina can become Sovkhoz (State Farm)

And all the effects could remain the same.

I think inclusion of historical Russia surely wasn't a question. The question is probably how it's included. The inclusion of Ukrainian city in the roster (with showing it on the video) and the phrase "Bow before Catherine the Great" really sparked some unnecessary debates.

Well, I only see Kazan for Russian settlement name in videos, which one did you noticed?

In one hand, if that city was part of the Imperial Russia at the time, that doesn't really have any big connection with the USRR and current Russia that is more related with Putin wanting Ukraine, then I don't see any ill intent. But at the same time, would probably still be better to not have used it, just like how I think the civs games also don't do things like having USA cities name on a England civ because some of those cities were founded by England while USA wasn't independent, (plus other examples like Portugal with Brazil, etc) which would likely get some Americans angry.

Oh, they included Mykolaiv in the city list. I don't like it.
It's awkward, yeah. It is justified in the sense that the Romanovs did settle it, and that it was a crucial Black Sea port to the Russian Empire (alongside Sevastopol and Odesa). It was probably not the best moment to include it on a Russian city list, but from a strict historical perspective it is kosher.

Exactly. Calcutta could very justifiably appear on the city list of a Modern Age British Empire, but I don’t think this would go down well at all.

There are also city names on the great works screen shown in the video.
Aha, I missed that Nikolayev(Mykolaiv) on the screen.

I feel mixed feeling from this issue: I personally support Ukraine and get upset about the Russian war crimes, but on the other hand, I still want to see some Ukrainian cities (like Mykolaiv and Sevastopol) in Russian Civ because they were very important in the history of Russian Empire and Soviet Union. It seems clear that the Russia in Civ 7 is not the nowaday Russian Federation of Putin so it's technically okay, but it's still highly contentious indeed...
