From Kerbal to the Mun - A Mini AAR

Kerbal Space Program is a game about rockets. It is specifically about attempting to get those rockets into space and creating a meaningful space program, but in my experience it is more about explosions. Those explosions are rarely intentional, it should be stressed, but no less beloved for their enthusiasm for the job.

For this AAR we have a singular purpose: we are to create a rocket capable of reaching the Mun - the lone natural satellite of this world. We shall send Kerbals to the Mun, and we shall bring them home safely. If we can, we shall utilise only the rocket parts provided by the base game, but if that should prove foolhardy then mods can be utilised.

The objective is the Mun. The aim is to reach it before 2013. That gives me two months and ten days to work out how to play this game and achieve my goal.

The rocket program is in full effect - both the Soviet Kerbal Union and the United States of Kerbal have declared their desire to create rockets capable of orbiting the planet. Both have declared they would not be entirely unsatisfied if said rockets failed to orbit said planet, and instead simply landed - with explosive warheads - on their opponents homelands. Better than nothing.

But then it is October 20th, 2012

U.S. leader VRWC Agent: “I will not allow the United States of Kerbal to ever go to sleep under the light of a communist moon.”

Today The Kerbin Union of Neutral Nations has announced plans to launch a rocket into orbit, following similar declarations from the SKU and USK. We talked to a scientist on the scene.

"Between you and me, the design the Union Space Program has come up with isn't the best. It needs more fuel, more thrust! You can never have enough of that."

In other news, the Kerbal Space Program has announced its first two selections for the orbital rocket planned....
