I really enjoyed the King of the World series and I think many others on these forums do too. Thus, I'm thinking I should try playing a scenario 1790AD (world map) on Monarch level as an ALC style game. What does everyone think?!? What civ do you think I should play with?!?

OK .. I'm not patient enough to wait for a reply so I'm gonna start ..
These are the settings and the leader:

YES .. Bismarck; I thought it would be too easy to play Russia, Britain, or France and I've already tried the US; the choice was between Germany, Austria and the Ottomans..

Anyways, here's the start. We're at war with Napoleon and Holland his vassal.

There is a GS in Berlin :) and a handful of defenders in each city. Our (future) overseas possessions...

Napoleon is actually the strongest of all and what I've seen of his army till now gave a mild heart attack at first.

But then I saw my defenses in Dortmund and I felt a bit better.

The tech tree:

I was tempted to being but I want some input first. How do you suggest I go against Napoleon.. do I fight defensively at first? What do I research? Do I build an academy with my GS at once or do I lightbulb?

Here's some ideas:
1) You have tons of Riflemen in Dortmund. Use these against the Cavalry stack to the southwest.
2) Leave only one or two Riflemen and Grenadiers in your main cities for defense. The rest should split into two main groups: 1 to capture Munich, then Southern France, the other to capture Amsterdam (it'll be almost impossible for the Dutch to take it back, since most of their land is overseas) and move to Paris.
3) Who all is at war with Napoleon? I assume the English, Russians, and Austrians, but anyone else? Get Open Borders with these people ASAP. They'll be more likely to send troops to France through your land; its the fastest route.
4) I suggest bringing tons of units from Berlin south. Napoleon's mega-stack has the ability to crush Dortmund. Reinforcing there will aid your situation.
5) Lastly, for the tech choices: Since you want to head to Rocketry ASAP, I suggest Steam Power. It leads to Assembly Line. After that, grab Constitution and Democracy. Try making contact with the US to trade techs or something.

Can you give the link to the map file? looks extremely good the adaptation to the 1790 of the Earth map ( for playing in holidays )

Sure, here we go ..

I'll play out the first few turns and post it tonight ..

1) I want to contact as many civs as possible
2) I'm gonna repel France's attack, maybe beef my army up a bit and attack Munich followed by Amsterdam like suggested
3) I'm gonna found/capture cities in Africa/New Guinea
4) I'm gonna research Steam Power - Assembly Line is high on the priority list - Infantry + Pentagon + Factories; another tech I need to get relatively early is Industrialism for Panzers

IMHO you shoud start settling central Africa..... IIRC the area has a lot of rivers and grassland, so it will pay well if cottaged or watermilled for making it the Space elevator city. Alternatevely you can grab amazonian lands , but that would make you go to war with the Portuguese ( not sure how strong they are in your scenario , but I bet they are good friends of the English ( probably DP ), so it may be not advisable.

Round I - An Overseas Empire and the Conquest of the Netherlands

As this round started off, I conquered 3 cities in Africa with my troops - no casualties :) but I was fighting longbows with cannon and cuirassiers so that's no suprise; I also founded a city in New Guinea. My empty gallon near South Africa got sunk by a French frigate though.

Then this guy comes in:

.. and I decide to pull that deal .. not a great one but I need to get some techs on George III and Napoleon so they don't pull away too much. Washington becomes pleased.

Civ4ScreenShot0014.jpg

Napoleon attacks my city only with cannons - I kill 4 and suffer no casualties; his regulars did not attack me (maybe a good move since they would not take the city); instead he attacked Munich that was captured by Austria on the same turn and retook it with some casualties on both sides.

Then, I pull a few resource trades..

My cavalry sent to Amsterdam looks at the defenses there:

Not weak but nothing I can't handle.

Next Washington comes in asks me to convert to Free Speech - since I want to cultivate him as an ally + I'm under heavy cultural pressure from Austria and France, I figure I should switch for +100% culture; I also switch Hereditary Rule to Representation for some extra beakers.

Then comes Catherine:

.. and I tell her to shove off and then she comes again:

Civ4ScreenShot0022.jpg

.. and I agree to that; Ottomans hate me anyways because of religious differences. Then I pull a resource trade with Washington:

Civ4ScreenShot0023.jpg

and in the mean time I capture Amsterdam and keep the Dutch out of Europe with moderate casualties - 2 cannon, 2 grenadiers and a cavalry.

My economy right now is in big sauce .. I can research only at 40% science .. distance maintenance in particular is severe (-33) so I may have to get State Property soon. Do I continue the war and finish off the French or do I make peace until I fix my economy? Anything else I overlooked?
