FTS-02 The Immortal One

I think Saladin would still accept a PA if you close the dialogue box. It's like if an AI offers you a trade - even if you turn it down you can negotiate it again the same turn.

But in the absence of a save I say yes, take the PA, build the spaceship, kill Hatty.

Plan A, which was to upgrade everything to Infantry and Artillery, isn't going to happen. It will cost 6000 gold for all of the upgrades. While we have 1900 gold in the bank, turning off the research slider only nets us another 200gpt. It will take 20 turns to upgrade everything, which just isn't worth it!

Our Grenadiers will do just fine against Roosevelt's Riflemen. The problem will be his Cavalry. So, I'm going to upgrade 2 Musketmen to Infantry to defend against any Cavalry incursion. I'm also going to upgrade our level 4 Maceman to Infantry. If we can get him to level 5 (another 7xp), we could then build West Point. And finally, I want to upgrade our 7 Catapults to Artillery. To do all of this, I will have to leave research turned off for 6 turns. We might ought to consider building Wall Street in the near future, but there are higher priorities at the moment.

Turn 251 (1705 AD)
Research begun: Electricity
Berlin begins: The Pentagon

I decide to reassign a couple of our scientists to engineers. This shaves 2 turns off of the Pentagon build (now due in 13 turns). I notice that we will pop another GP in 2 turns, with a 30% chance for another Great Artist (another reason to not build the Hermitage). I also notice that the Ironworks is still available to be built. Evidently, we did not build it as previously reported.

FTS-02_1705AD_Ironworks.JPG

Turn 252 (1710 AD)
I've sent our Warrior over to have a look at Harappan. It is being defended by 5 Riflemen and a Cannon. No Cavalry! A look at New York shows 3 Cannons and 4 Cavalry ready to roll.

IBT:
Joseph Marie Jacquard (Great Engineer) born in Berlin

Turn 253 (1715 AD)
Our newest GE will grant us 900 hammers towards the Pentagon, which should be enough to finish it next turn. Merging him will get us 3 hpt, which will take 300 turns to get to 900. There are only 207 turns left in the game. The wild card is the 3 bpt from Representation. Honestly, I think the best use is to complete the Pentagon and start turning out 2 promotion troops, since we are about to go to war.

Oops. Bad math. We have 2 turns left on the Pentagon. I put the extra engineers back to work as scientists and MM the city for growth. We will still complete the Pentagon in 2 turns, but we will also grow in 2 turns. ;)

And since we are about to be able to start producing troops again, upgrading our remaining Catapults is not as much of a priority. So, I decide to turn research back on.

FTS-02_1715AD_WarFDR.JPG

We pick up a couple of negative modifiers from Saladin and Hatshepsut for declaring war on their friend, but they remain friendly with us. And since we are now at war, let's see if anyone will join us! Only Napoleon ...

The defenses of Philadelphia are reduced to RUBBLE

IBT:
While defending, Infantry defeats (14.80/20): American Cannon at 92.6 percent. 6xp till West Point
The fleet at Philadelphia sets sail. I'm not sure if that is good news or bad news. The city will definitely be razed now, but they could land the troops next to Berlin.

Turn 254 (1720 AD)
Let the battle of Philly begin ...
While attacking, Artillery loses to: American Rifleman (11.48/14) at 28.5 percent.
While attacking, Artillery loses to: American Rifleman (3.50/14) at 52.7 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier loses to: American Rifleman (2.52/14) at 67.3 percent.

While attacking, Grenadier defeats (12.00/12): American Rifleman at 100.0 percent.
Razed Philadelphia and capture a Worker in the process.

Now for all of those troops that came flooding across the border ...
While attacking, Artillery defeats (1.80/18): American Cavalry at 72.8 percent.
While attacking, Artillery defeats (18.00/18): American Grenadier at 95.0 percent.
While attacking, Artillery defeats (5.04/18): American Cavalry at 72.8 percent.
While attacking, Artillery defeats (1.80/18): American Cavalry at 73.2 percent.

While attacking, Grenadier defeats (12.00/12): American Cavalry at 87.5 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (11.00/20): American Cannon at 99.9 percent.
While attacking, Artillery defeats (18.00/18): American Cavalry at 100.0 percent.

And finally ...
The defenses of Atlanta are reduced to 45%

IBT:
Our sugar get pillaged, as well as the fishing nets of our spare clams.
A contingent, consisting of 5 Cavalry and 3 Cannons, are landed on the grassland cottage outside of Berlin.
Berlin grows: 21
Berlin finishes: The Pentagon

Turn 255 (1725 AD)
Berlin begins: Artillery

Now for Roosevelt's landing party ...
While attacking, Artillery loses to: American Cavalry (12.00/15) at 27.0 percent.
While attacking, Artillery defeats (0.90/18): American Cavalry at 56.9 percent.
While attacking, Artillery defeats (3.60/18): American Cavalry at 88.9 percent.
While attacking, Artillery defeats (9.90/18): American Cavalry at 51.5 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (8.28/12): American Cavalry at 86.3 percent.
While attacking, Artillery defeats (18.00/18): American Cavalry at 99.4 percent.
While attacking, Infantry defeats (17.60/20): American Cannon at 100.0 percent.
At this point, I'm running out of healthy and available troops!
While attacking, Catapult loses to: American Cannon (1.20/12) at 67.5 percent.
While attacking, Musketman defeats (5.58/9): American Cannon at 99.1 percent.
While attacking, Warrior loses to: American Cannon (1.20/12) at 94.7 percent.
That Cannon only had 10 hit points. :shake:
While attacking, Spearman defeats (2.08/4): American Cannon at 100.0 percent. Well, not quite a Tank.
:spear:

And finally ...
The defenses of Atlanta are reduced to 30%

IBT:
Our other clam gets pillaged. The city is now starving.
Meanwhile, 2 more Cavalry and 2 more Cannons cross the border.

Turn 256 (1730 AD)
Take a look at the power graph for the last 2 turns. We have definitely put some hurt onto FDR!

FTS-02_1730AD_Power.JPG

Now, let's take care of the troops he sent across the border ...
While attacking, Artillery loses to: American Cavalry (5.10/15) at 77.1 percent.
While attacking, Artillery defeats (9.36/18): American Cavalry at 95.6 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (11.28/12): American Cavalry at 99.8 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (6.00/12): American Cannon at 49.8 percent.
While attacking, Grenadier defeats (7.68/12): American Cannon at 86.1 percent.

And finally ...
The defenses of Atlanta are reduced to 15%

IBT:
Berlin finishes: Artillery
While defending, Musketman defeats (5.76/9): American Rifleman at 74.3 percent.

While attacking, Infantry defeats (17.40/20): American Cannon at 100.0 percent.
Razed Atlanta

No change in the border situation despite razing 2 cities. This is because of the culture bomb that FDR did in Harappan. Once that city is razed, the borders should move. Our troops need a few turns with the medic, but then they should be ready to go. We have 5 Artillery, 2 Infantry, and 3 Grenadiers. This should be more than enough to take the city.

Research into Radio will be done next turn. I suggest we grab Computers next for the Laboratory. Saladin has given us both horses and iron. We can probably go ahead and build the Ironworks, now. Sal has no coal, but will have a source once Harappan is razed.

Berlin will need to be MM'ed again next turn after our clams gets hooked up.

Sweet! Have we just had the winning 10 turns? :goodjob:

Remember we can tell Saladin which cities to attack. We might want to declare on greece to let him have some fun with the artillery in his eastern colonies. They should do quite well against longbows.

Quick look at the save and have a few questions/observations:

Apollo Program: As I recall either Saladin or us can build it, not both. So technically we need to have some :hammers: invested in it to keep Saladin from building it in some low production town. The question is do we wish to build it in Berlin, or allow Saladin to build it? So far Saladin hasn’t started on it, as it is still an option for us. If we prefer to be the ones who build it we need to put it in the queue to make it unavailable to Saladin.

Asking Saladin to attack…: If we ask him to attack Boston it should take the only source of copper out of FDR’s borders. We currently have several troops near FDR’s only source of coal and iron too, so if this works we could take a lot of FDR’s units from him. Edit: Whoops, it appears that taking those resources away won’t harm him that much after all. Possibly Harappan then?

Build Queue: Possibly Apollo Program (depending on the team). We need a few more infantry for the war plus start on the Ironworks.

Any suggestions/criticism?

It is quite possible. Once that PA was signed, we had every known tech. With Saladin's help, Electricity became a 1 turn tech. Radio was originally a 2 turn tech, but Saladin regeared his economy towards production and it became a 3 turn tech. It is absolutely amazing how fast these Immortal AI's can research!

Our only real competition at this point is Hatty. She is the GNP leader and is picking up manufacturing capability recently. She is still friendly with us.

I thought about Greece. But, the American lands are better than the Greek, so I think we should finish off FDR first. We should probably take our Artillery stack and go knock down all of the city defenses. The AI has a bad habit of attacking a city before lowering its defenses. Of course, Harappan needs to fall first.

Methos said:
Really? I didn't know this. Looks like I need to look at PA's a little more closely.
Yes, you can ask him to attack a certain city or research a certain tech. When you go into the diplomacy screen, click on the "Let's discuss something else" option. You should see the choices under that menu option. FYI, this is the way it works on team games, as well.

Saladin was already building the Apollo program when we signed the PA. I don't recall which city (Mecca maybe?). He put it (and everything else) on hold when he got access to Assembly Line to build Factories in all of his cities.

Methos said:

FDR has 2 sources of coal. One is near the ruins of Philadelphia and the other is near the ruins of Atlanta. Note that Saladin has no coal source. The razing of Harappan should give Saladin immediate access to the Philly coal source.

1795 AD I move our stack towards NY looking to help our noble Arabian allies. As this stack is our only army, I intend to take good care of it.

1800 AD Start research into Industrialism, and start a lab in Berlin.

1802 AD Roosevelt kills a musketman that was apparently hanging out in Elephantine. I didn't even know he was there until he was killed.

1804 AD Lab is done and I start an Infantry.

Descartes is born in Berlin. Looking at the math, we have a +250% beaker modifier in Berlin, so merging him will give a net of 31 beakers per turn. He could provide 1953 beakers towards fission, but with a break even of only 65 turns or so I merge him.

I also thought about keeping him around to gift to Saladin to help him start a golden age. If we're in the space race we should consider that, but I think we're going to get a domination or conquest victory here.

Our highest xp unit has 15. I decide to gamble a little with our stack in the hopes of getting him to 17 xp, lvl 5, and getting West Point built.

After bombarding New York to 0% defense, there are 2 machine guns and an infantry. I send in one arty, who suicides, and send in a second, who wins. We're still only about 30% to win with our chosen unit, so I send in a grenadier to soften things up. Then I send the infantry, and he gets the 2 xps we need.

ftswestpointeligible.jpg

I leave Roosevelt's last wounded infantry intact so that Saladin can take the city.

1806 NY captured by Arabia.

I promote our unit to level 5 and start West Point. Too bad we don't have stone to speed it along.

I dial up Saladin and he gladly sends us Stone, Oil, Deer, and Wheat, which shave 1 turn off of West Point.

1808 AD NY recaptured by Roosevelt. NY rerecaptured by Saladin. Our units have pulled back to heal.

1810 AD Hatty asks for Biology. I am not in a giving vein this day.

1812 AD Now that all of our BFC territory is improved, I build a fort on the hill east of Berlin - just because.

1814 AD I'm trying to decide between building a coal plant now, or waiting a few turns for a hydro plant. Instead I opt for:
ftspanzer.jpg

1816 AD Start moving our stack to reduce Washington for our friend the Arabians. You might want to dial him up and tell him to attack Washington so that he can pick it up once we weaken it.

1818 AD Looking around, it appears that Hatty has two sources of Aluminum, but we and Saladin have none. Too bad for her. I see a knife in her back as soon as Roosevelt is done.

1820AD I played an extra turn to get us to 180 left. We have artillery and three panzers in range of Washington, which no doubt will fall soon. We don't want to capture these cities ourselves though, let our PA partner grab them.

ftsberlin1818.jpg

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads12/FTS-02_AD-1820.Civ4SavedGame

Incidently, now that our borders are shared by our permanent ally, the cultural rules change a bit. Even if we have dominant culture, Saladin gets preference if he has culture on a tile and it is in his BFC. So the Hermitage is pretty much useless.

We're getting +50% production from the coal via the Ironworks, so I kept the coal deal alive. Saladin should probably have two coal anyway. If he doesn't we should get him some via war.

If Hatty is crushed before my next turnset, then this game will be so in the bag.

Saladin is giving us oil, deer, wheat, coal and stone for free as his only resources. His cities are unhealth and some are forced to build grocers/hospitals to keep healthy. We have a 4 point health cushion, so I'm going to cancel some of those deals when I can.

T1 (1822) Berlin starts Red Cross (3 turns). That's a great wonder because it lets your units promote straight to march. Roosevelt adopts Pacifism - nice.

T2 (1824) Bombard washington to 0%. Saladin still won't arrive with any troops, despite me asking again. I wait a while.

T3 (1828) Red Cross -> Marine. Cancel wheat from saladin deal.

T4 (1830) Plastics comes in, start Flight (for carrier groups). Finally 5 arabian cavs arrive at Washington. I send in our troops, leaving an injured machine gunner. Unfortunately we lost the last of our artillery.

T5 (1832) Saladin captures Washington. Berlin begins a Hydro Plant. Cancel saladin's deer deal. Move toward Boston.

T6 (1834) Start a Panzer. Saladin finishes the Eiffel Tower

T7 (1836) Start a battleship. Isa begins war with Napoleon, captures Parthian. Hatty captures Chelais. I'm worried about this territory Hatty is getting from our friend Napoleon, so I give her biology for peace, 900 gold and her map. Saladin won't send any troops toward Boston. This is getting annoying.

T8 (1838) Battleship -> Arti. Come on Saladin, your cities are chocked full of artillery. Send some!

T9 (1840) Arti -> Arti

T10 (1842) I'm annoyed because Saladin still hasn't sent any troops to Boston. A domination win will not be much fun if we have to wait 6 turns every time we want a silly AI to capture a city. I queue up Apollo program in frustration (can be changed, no hammers).

Do you think that there is another city that Saladin would prefer to attack? Or is he just not attacking any cities at all?

Conroe said:

During my turn set I asked Saladin to attack Harappan and he did send a couple cav over. They had just become adjacent to the city when I razed it. I debated letting them capture it.

So Saladin did attempt to comply with my request, but that's the only time I asked him.

When I asked him to attack Washington he sent troops 3 turns later - that's slightly late but OK. But for Boston he still hasn't sent any troops. I think we can take care of most of the civs ourselves, but for hatty we will definitely need Saladin's help. Unfortunately, I think the AI assigned too many troops as defensive, not enough as offensive. So despite our+saladin's power being much greater than Hatty's, the power of troops Saladin is actually willing to commit to attacking is only a fraction of the total. Hatty has huge garrissons, so we will need many, many carrier groups to soften them up. I think it will be quicker to build the spaceship (we are teching at an incredible rate), but if the team wants domination then I'll be happy to go along with it.

I think it will be quicker to build the spaceship
I must say I like the sound of that. Especially considering how little free time I have for civ anymore. But judging from the demographics, I think Hatshepsut will be a formidable opponent in a space race, as well. Her GNP is greater than ours and Saladin combinded. Since our PA tech costs are higher, she will be able to out tech us. In fact, I think we are already seeing this as she is catching up with us. She also leads the demographics in production. Since neither us nor Saladin has aluminum, she should be able to complete the spaceship before us. Personally, I think war with Hatty is almost inevitable.

I only played 9 turns to get us back to an even number. I think we are ready to attack Hatty at this point. Her Tanks are on the other side of her empire going after Izzy. If she's smart, she will pull them back to defend against us; but that will take 2 or 3 turns. In the meantime, we have a window of opportunity to strike.

Pi-Ramesses and Giza are the 2 key cities to take. They both have aluminum. We should probably take Elephantine just to reduce the cultural pressure on Saladin. Everything is setup to take Pi-Ramesses first. This city has the largest number of defenders. I suggest we just raze it rather than waiting on Saladin. Depending on what Hatty does next, our Panzers can be used against her Tanks or we can go after Elephantine.
