Full Patch Notes for December Patch

I think they should also tweak 1upt, but not to the full effect that cIV had. I think that you should be able to have up to TWO different military units on one tile; one melee and one ranged.

2upt wouldnt solve any problem, or better the combat game, that the whole concept of 1upt was designed to do in this Civ version.

Which means, if you dont like 1upt, you might as well ask for no tile restrictions on units. Because any middle ground would be restrictive, without any of the benefits of 1upt.

2upt, 3upt, 4upt...all worthless. It only makes sense to restrict tiles to one military unit, or no restriction!

despite the pain in moving units, i personally prefer 1upt. Combat is more interesting in having to figure out terrain vs unit placement and ranges placement vs melee placement. Im glad the game doesnt allow me to stack!

Global happiness is too important of a factor to eliminate from the game with a startup option. The game would be way too easy if you didn't have to worry about happiness limiting your growth.

That and certain people asking for greater yields/resources without counterbalances. The whole point is to make this game more challenging and more difficult to beat, and this patch heads in the right direction.

I'm afraid that's all it is. Without local happiness, I'm afraid that's all it could be.

I think that's going to be my biggest remaining gripe: global happiness. It just takes too much away from the formula of the game.

Check-box option at startup anyone?

That will never happen.

Either hope for a mod, or make one yourself; Not any other options I can think of here. ;)

Easy counterbalance: city tiles give smaller benefits. Right now placing one on snow grats you +2/+2/+1......seems a little bogus to me.

Valkrionn did you find the pace of discovering techs a bit too fast in beta?
I fear that with later Research buildings so much stronger we will see even faster research with low levels of production.

Patch notes are awesome.
Can't wait :)

One thing though: I am sure this patch will break most of the existing mods. I don't understand why we are forced to update the game. What if I want to keep playing the current version of the game with the mod I created ? What if I wrote a mod, am I forced to update my mod every time a new patch is out ?

When specifically asked about this before release, 2K Greg said that of course Firaxis would be careful and patches would not break mods, which is... let's say very unlikely. I really don't understand why we are forced to update the game for single player, it doesn't make sense.

[CITY/BUILDINGS]
  • Library now has no specialist slots.
  • Paper Maker now has no specialist slots.

This is ridiculous. Reducing them from 2 slots to 1 slot would have been fine, but to completely removed their slots is excessive.

This change is enough to show me that Firaxis and 2K care nothing about the games they make nor the expectations of players that have been loyal fans of this series.

As of now, I'm done with these companies. I will never buy another game that has anything to do with these companies nor from any company that is stupid enough to hire anyone from this dev team.

Why? Because this company and dev team just showed they does NOT think about the changes they make. Instead they take knee-jerk reactions to a few elite players blowing their vision and make the entire game so much harder that only those same elite players will have any chance in hell of beating it on any difficulty.

This crap reminds me of the early days of Everquest, where that dev team ramped the difficulty up across the board to a level that sucked every bit of fun from the game. All because a few players managed to hit level 50 in 6 months of playing almost 24/7. Meanwhile the average player was lucky to be in the 30's by the end of the first year.

So once again, another dev team looks at the feats of the power games instead of the average player. Then caters the entire game to the mere 6-10% of the player base that is made up of these power gaming elite players.

I already avoid Sony games because of the crap with EQ and the even worse crap with SWG. Now Firaxis/2K wants to follow in Sony's footsteps. Thanks, but no thanks. I'll take my money to a company that cares about pleasing the majority, aka average gamers, instead of the minority, aka, power gamers.

Exaggeration much? Unless you have not been able to beat Civ V on any difficulty past Warlord (in which case you are probably not representative of the "average" player), I doubt any of the patch changes will make it so that only "elite players" will have the chance of beating Civ V on any difficulty.

The only difference made by removing library scientist slots is that you will no longer be able to get as many Great Scientists. Seeing as the tech pace was so fast to begin with, I fail to see how removing the slots would cause problems to anyone.

Well, mods which mess with the UI will need to be updated. Mods which modify xml, will almost definitely not require update.

I was reading through them and picked the following 2 changes that I didn't like:
Promotions must be picked the turn they're earned.
Players must now always adopt Policies immediately, and cannot defer picking until later.

But then I saw this further down:
# Added setup options to allow players to defer choosing Policies and Promotions right away.

Good work Firaxis. Now when do we get this?

Valkrionn - I am about to hit the pit (UK), but before I escape, a note of thanks to you for taking the time & trouble to be on the board so much tonight, it has helped me get another perspective of the patch, coming from someone involved in the testing, which I personally found useful.

Have a good one :)

Regards
Zy

I suspect the library nerf is a bit much. I'd have said 1 slot and/or a nerf to each Great Science slot. It reads like a knee jerk reaction.

Looks like I'm going to have to relearn some of the game. Don't get me wrong, that's good -- I haven't played in weeks, because the game currently is simply no fun. Despite myself, I'm excited.

All of this from removing some specialist slots? I find this hilarious.

You do realize this is "CivFanatics", right :)? Wait till he finds out they have slightly changed the shade of green of the forests or something major like that.

It's depressing that the dev's saw no need to buff bonus resources.

Anyways, it sounds like the game will be better from the changes, but only because they are fixing things that should not have been broken if the game wasn't rushed out the door half baked.

Just to be sure, will the Mac version be patched the same time as the Windows version? This should be a no-brainer with Steam, but it seems that Aspyr is involved in the process somehow, and my experiences with them have been nothing but utterly horrible.

So the actual release date of the game is Dec 16th.

Who cares? Whats the diff? :P
