exactly.

I've read that the vedic archers make a beeline to a target Civs Capital (or is it a target city?) and ignore all else.
They are one of the major arguments to turn events off - but then you wouldn't get this fun.

Before a certain year, I believe barbs do not attack your cities. The year is subject to variance with difficulty and the "Raging Barbs" setting. Don't quote me on this, either.

One of the most uneven battles I've ever seen, and I swear that HE initiated it - not me! But then Monty always was insane...

Haha we could have a ss thread dedicated to Monty. Monty is a nut. That fight also reminds me of a glorious sea battle I had with Zara a long time ago (view post) :mischief:

Bibracte is impregnable. I can only think of one way to capture it.

Spoiler :
Paradrop... you'd never get cultural borders on its lake coast to build a ship. And no spies either. He only has a second city because it was an advanced start.

I ALMOST got Liberalism before the Great Lighthouse on Monarch.

I don't see how people can get Liberalism even on Monarch in the 9th century. It is odd, I am a fairly experienced middle level player almost ready for Emperor... Yet I can't get Lib before 1000 AD. Odd...

I usually get liberalism ASAP. After getting CoL/Monarchy/Currency, it's usually CS -> Paper -> Bulb Philosophy with GS -> Education -> Liberalism for me. You don't have to get liberalism <1000AD, I've gotten away with getting it around 1200AD. But the map was pangea, it had Justinian on it, and I was running heavy cottage economy, so I figured better early than never.

It's amazing how easy playing Monarch seems after playing Emperor for so long, yet I remember struggling to make it to Monarch! The key to fast research I've found while playing a recent Monarch game while testing BUG is liberally trading techs to the AIs for :gold: well below their actual value. Once I got Alphabet, I maintained 100% research almost the entire game well past Steel (which I got for free from Liberalism).

The cost is that the AIs get to keep up in tech, but it means you rip through the eras. If anything, I've been a little bummed in this game as I didn't get to make much use of my Samurai before I finally had to start on Rifling to avoid researching Scientific Method (I have Great Library and need some more Monasteries).

^^ Thank you EmperorFool. Though I agree Medieval war can be within a very short time window sometimes. I am experimenting with gunpowder and upgrading to rifles after the musketmen are outdated and them to infantry after if you are fighting a very long war.

I learned from reading along with a succession game that going down the Steel tech path allows you to use Macemen until the AI gets Rifling. This way your main troops become very experienced before you wipe their XPs upgrading to Riflemen. Cannons are fairly cheap for what they do, and losing the occasional one while softening the defenses before your Macemen attack speeds up the war and saves your seasoned troops.

Oooh, Oromos! Just played with them - had no army at all before Gunpowder (ok, some fogbusting Axes), then went Globe Theatre Draft with some Trebs thrown in. The Drill units get XP so fast and don't even have to stop to heal when they fight against inferior units like Longbowmen...lots of Drill IV around to be upgraded to Rifles. I love Oromos...

Promotions stay with units even when you upgrade, right?

Yes, promotions are kept. The unit's XP drops to 10, however, unless it is led by a Great General. In that case you get free upgrades with no XP loss. The only reason not to upgrade a GG-led unit is to keep it from being picked as the best defender.

Getting the Drill 1 and 2 promotions is the biggest reason I like Oromo Warriors.

Indeed. One of the greatest benefits of the Drill line of promotions is that they do not affect the XP you gain from a win. So while the unit is become more likely to win as you add Drill promotions, they will still gain XP at a high rate as if they were weak. :goodjob:

... and with Zara's ORG goodness, you can have a zillion draft cities to spread out the draft angst, and not die out from insane maintenance. It's really just sick how flexible Zara is.

I kind of stumbled onto that, playing monarch. I was really late on the scene for macemen. Due to my strong economy I won liberalism and chose Steel. A macemen/cannon army tore everything up. It was the most awesome free tech I think I've managed, so far... but on Emp+ it may not be realistic to get Chem before Lib...?

I can do it usually on Emperor now that I see how powerful it is. Chemistry is fairly expensive, yes, but the right use of monopoly techs can help. In this Monarch game I described, I had to sell off Education for dirt cheap to all the AIs just so I could have other non-military techs to sell them! I've never seen every AI avoid Education for so long. The only one who self-researched it was the #2 AI simply because I was too stubborn to sell it to Hannibal for under 2000:gold:. Everyone else paid 300-600:gold:. :crazyeye:

I usually grab Chemistry with Lib on Immortal, and then research Steel. Current game, Maces/Pikes/Cannons/Curris/Muskets currently romping around handing out cans of WhoopAss on Izzy, Willem, and Cat in 800 AD. Good times.

I'm curious about Macemen + Cannons, I can see how you easily beat opponents on the offense, but how do you deal with your opponent's Riflemen/Grenadiers attacking your stack? That should be a slaughter...
