Screenshots from my recent games
1 & 2 advanced barbarians: (1) wheat originated in the arid climate of the fertile crescent, and only now are we developing through genetic engineering varieties of wheat which can withstand tropical climates, (2) and i know some ancient real world civs practiced factory-type production to a limited extent but LMAO can't help laughing at the thought of digging out ancient "scrolls and stone tablets" and finding blueprints for tanks (not to mention the prerequisite techs)

having seen other screenshots of technologically advanced tribes with knowledge of antigravity and free maps of oceans from astronomically-literate barbarians, allow me to present some theories to explain all this: either barbs are descended from aliens, or they captured and razed atlantis and stole their techs

3 & 4 let me post some more screenshots from my latest game:
(3) That's me on the NE continent, playing as Spain. I had earlier conquered Egypt, which used to occupy the middle of the continent, which happened to contain loads of gold. before that hatty & charlie were friends and were bullying me because they were stronger: hatty had all the gold, charlie is protective and has strong UU, so naturally I sought revenge. now I'm fighting a long war vs. charlie and i've reduced HR to a few poorly defended cities with my conquistadores... a while later justinian and genghis khan joins the war on my side so at first i was very happy because I was expecting some help (which didn't come so I did all the hard work; sacrificed lots of catapults, trebuchets, and some of my most experienced units

) now, look at (3) -
just 1 more turn, and the continent is mine! vengeance is sweet - and
THEN guess what happens... justinian vassalizes charlie! (4) how rude
