IIRC AIs average you and your vassal's diplomacy scores together, and treat you both like you were at the resulting number. IE, if Kublai had a +8 with you, and a -14 with your vassal, you'd end up with a -3 with him. Here's the kicker: he'd still say he was friendly.

They average the attitude, not the numbers. (e.g. Pleased + Annoyed = Cautious).
