Future Worlds

Im planning to add audio files for the tech quotes that would read the quote when the tech is researched. Can someone guide me on how to do it?

Tangential, but I wonder if changing up a handful of the tech quotes to add voice acted lines might be a worthwhile idea, for that extra element of feeling "official". There's some good narrated tech quotes from Empires of the Smoky Skies that could be re-purposed for FW. Here's some I was thinking might fit various parts of the FW tech tree:

  • "There will always be plenty of things to compute in the detailed affairs of millions of people doing complicated things." –Vannevar Bush (used for Analog Computation)
  • "Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking about them." –Alfred North Whitehead (used for Automata)
  • "Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed." –Francis Bacon (used for Eruptives)
  • "In wilderness I sense the miracle of life, and behind it our scientific accomplishments fade to trivia." –Charles Lindbergh (used for Expedition)
  • "Give me a place to stand and a lever long enough, and I shall move the world." –Archimedes (used for Perpetual Motion)
  • "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." –Arthur C. Clarke (used for Sky Fortress)
The SMAC tech quotes might also be worth considering, since those have voice acting, albeit less consistent to the Civ5 style.

The archery line upgrade into an unmanned drone reaaaally bugs me.

Out of curiosity, why? Remote controlled warfare seemed like a good way to reflect ranged warfare in the modern era.

I couldn't put a stealth bomber into a supercarrier. Is that intentional?

The Stealth Bomber can't be put onto a Carrier in the normal game, either. It's a quirk of the way the units are coded -- Great War Bombers and Bombers are coded as Fighters for SpecialCargo, so they can be carried on Carriers, but Stealth Bombers (and Suborbital Bombers) aren't. It makes a certain amount of sense, as you can't launch a Stealth Bomber even from a Supercarrier (and a Suborbital Bomber requires even more support to launch it). I know it does bring up the issue of being unable to transport Stealth Bombers over large oceans, though. Can you airlift aircraft between cities?

Being in the combat domain is fine. Allowing a continuation of a manpower unit, with all its veterancy bonuses, into an unmanned drone, makes no sense.

Well, while the drones are unmanned, they aren't autonomous. Modern drones still require a controller to operate the drone, detect targets, and guide its attacks. While Hybrid Drones and Bio-Drones have increasing degrees of autonomy, with the Bio-Drones having something like the intelligence of a dog, they still need handlers to direct them and give them orders -- I imagine them being similar to the Xeno Swarm or the Drone Cage units from Beyond Earth. It even helps justify having Hybrid Drones with Implants, as one can imagine the handlers have implanted connects to their drones to help direct them. So that's why I don't really have an issue with them being a continuation of a manpower unit -- because they still have human controllers directing the weapons and carrying on the skills of their predecessors.

Fully autonomous weapons, on the other hand -- Automatons, Robot Infantry, and Nanohives -- don't have any human units they're upgraded from.

Well, having the unmanned drones walks like archer (2 steps) and having range as archer (2 tiles), that really bugs me X-P

Well, they're still an upgrade from the Bazooka, which has only the 1 tile range. :3 With the Drone UAV and Hybrid Drone, the main benefits are more the increasing range (2 tiles and then 3 tiles), with a modest increase in damage, since the Bazooka is already pretty strong. I can't remember if I increased the Drone UAV's movement to 3 so it could keep up with infantry units, or not...

Also, I've managed to learn the secrets of adding teamcolor to textures, so I'm hoping to go through the various Future Worlds units and gradually add teamcolor in. Also, after seeing someone play with R.E.D., I've become rather tempted to convert some of the extra units I've considered using as alternative models for different civs.

Yup they cant keep up with the infantry units. The uav 's movement is still 2 and the hybrid drone is 3. But im thinking of 2 solutions:
1) increase the range of uav to 4 and hybrid to 5, but the movement is still 2 and 3. Its funny when they can observe/reveal the surrounded area (air recon) but they cant attack the target within their air-recon's range. Im thinking that the uav's movement is actually the controller's movement (a truck command or something)
2) give em the "ignore terrain cost" promotion to keep up the infantry.

Anyway, have you read my previous review on your v6?

Yeah, my thought was that the drone was transported along the ground from site to site, and then launched when necessary. A long-term recon drone might loiter over an area a lot longer (and thus would be better depicted as a constantly flying unit), but I figure drone attacks tend to be one-shot missions where the drone is launched, attacks, and then returns, and is then moved to the next launching site.

At some point I'd like to try and actually have a transport truck as part of the model, but I think there may be difficulties in having units with no attack animations combined with untis that do have them. Someday I'll experiment to see if I can make it work. :P

As for your previous review, I did read it, I just haven't had much time to respond to it in detail.

In SuperPower mod, they put the UAV drone to be carried by cruiser and rocket artillery. Its working like airplane (it can stay in a city). But the plane still cant be carried by these two platform.

I ve made several changes in my review, sorry.

While working on other bugfixes and such, managed to get something else working:

Although can anyone guess what? :p

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGG!!!! You managed to make a Future ERA section!!! You aint use the DLL, right?

Having the Jurassic Park dinosaurs trainable after Designer Lifeforms? Or is that already working? (It was a few updates ago when I last played, so I don't recall.)
Yeah, its buy able (and produce able) in the city after Designed Lifeforms.

I'll take another look at it -- I'll try to respond this weekend when I'll have more time. :p

Yup! I finally worked my way through whoward69's tutorial on how to add eras dynamically! It's primarily an SQL method with a little Lua, but it doesn't use any DLL modification to do it.

I know a lot of people have been asking for me to implement a new era to break up the extensive Information Era, so glad I finally got it working!

Most of the existing Information Era splashes in CulDiv were pretty scifi anyway, though, so I wonder what they'd come up with.

But man, that's a lot of mileage out of that art with the futuristic city around the pyramids. I swear it's also one of the tech icons in FW, and one of those CulDiv screens too...

Ayy, new era! Now we can use FW with Mercs! :p
