So, why are Terra maps so popular for space games? Do you actually settle the new world or is it mainly to prevent triggering domination when conquering the old world?

Terra maps are so good because the new world cities are often very good and they still got Forests, to i.e. chop out the Life Support. Killing all old world Civs is not advisable, because they are needed for tech trading.

You have a nice tightly packed homeland for conquering without boats.

One other big advantage is that you can take a caravel/scout over there after optics and get free Astronomy! Not sure the odds, but it feels like 90%.

Free astronomy? You mean by a goodie hut? Is that possible to get such a late technology from a goodie hut?

Yes it is. Usually at that point of the game you have all the other possible techs to pop, which means you always get astronomy if the rng gives you a tech. Pop it with a healthy unit with barbs off and the probability would be about 18%. Pop 11 huts and the odds for free astronomy is indeed 90%. A worker to pop the huts is even better as it cannot get experience.

You have to make sure you have some of the smaller hut-techs like Music/Drama IIRC (unless you want to pop those free too!)

We'll need to pull out all the tricks to get 770 AD without Inca. (I wish we could do it as a succession game.) This thread could end up with quite a few more secrets/tricks (exploits ) revealed. I'm glad it's an extra long timeframe.

With all that said about free Astronomy, I'm not sure whether B&S map would be better than Terra. Obviously this decision has to be made quickly.

B&S gets early overseas trade rts with islands (but Terra can have an island or two in the old world)
B&S gets lots of seafood. But that opens up a whole discussion on Sushi vs. StateProperty.

Tachywaxon always was a supporter or b&s, but I morely think of terra, because of maintenance. It's true though that B&S somehow counters thos by foreign TRs.

Thx for that post fippy, but when I bought the computer, I needed to have a powerful notebook, because I was travelling quite often. On the NB-market, I don't know any brand, that offers the quality, portability and speed of Alienware.

Maybe I didn't look well enough on that site, or didn't understand where to go due to the language barrier, but can't you buy individual parts and build your own computer? That is what I have always done, and you get more value for you money that way. Plus of course, you get exactly what you want. Naturally more tricky for Notebooks, but for normal desktops I recommend building them yourself. It's a lot of fun too!

The brand “Schenker“ offers so called “barebones“ , which are desktop replacements that can be carried around. They are very heavy and large though.

I don't think there is any chance to construct a real Notebook oneself, because in those, all parts are tailored to fit perfectly. My mainboard i. e. is like a triangle, which allows to fit certain other components in the free space.

It's an expensive fun and there are only very limited optio.s to upgrade Notebooks, that's why I also will convert to a powerful desktop + an Ultrabook next time again.

Yeah, you can't really do that with Notebooks. But I like doing it for Desktops. Easy to upgrade, and if you buy the 'right' parts with the right timing, the computer can last 5 years without too many problems, and still be able to play most games in that period.

I'll be following this thread with interest btw, and hope there will be some tips for us that can't quite hack it at this level. Besides, such a big map with maybe 100 cities would be too much for me to handle I think. Worker management with 30-40 cities is already a nightmare.

So, is there any list/thread about tech from hutties? Actually I don't think I had anything advanced than feudalism in my games, and never really planned in advance to get any later ones.

I guess marathon speed is the onlyone which makes it worth not to research straight away for such a valuable technology (it especially is on Terra).

I think I'll go Sushi because I have my 700 AD space game to keep pace with and improve on. I also believe that corps generally beat StateProp on Deity.

When you launch a spaceship around 500 AD, you don't need to worry about switching many AI to caste. Most are backward...or dead

So the target date for sushi is Turn 315 (350 BC)
Mining on T330 (200 BC)

People often debate which corp to go for first. Mining might be better, but I've never tried that. In this gauntlet, at least if I go Liz, she can bulb more techs on the way to Sushi. I'm going to have to really exploit Liz's PHI trait. I think the fact that I need food for specialists, I should probably go with B&S. Islands with 2-3 seafood each.

I hope a large map will have a small forest area I can save til the end. I might regret B&S.
