While the general Hall of Fame is an ongoing competition, we like to run time-definite competitions between updates that we call Gauntlets. Standard Hall of Fame rules (*) still apply, but any games meeting the settings will be counted towards the Gauntlet.

(*) Please read the >> HOF rules << BEFORE playing!

 • Difficulty: Prince
 • Starting Era: Industrial
 • Map Size: Standard
 • Map Type: Any

 • Civ: Any
 • Opponents: Any

Must not play as Inca.
The earliest finish date wins, with score as a tiebreaker.

I love a good non-ancient start.

This was fun.
I even threw in both english civs and fred as opponents. Redcoats didn't really matter since I planned to go Cavalry instead of Grenadiers.

Fred's UU didn't come into play (game was too short), but he did not seem to want to capitulate very quickly. Vicky also took a long time to talk.

Man, I keep getting Domination victories...perhaps too many vassals.

I used Stalin's Cossacks and they rule even against the odd tank or MG. I got the first civ out later then should have in both attempts. Maybe it's best to build a SoD, bring it to opposite side of the Pangaea and then suffocate the middle....raze most cities?

I keep most cities. and vassal anyone who will offer. If you win quickly, the last 5 or so cities won't even be out of revolt. I did not find the domination limit a problem.

Cossacks: excellent choice. I went with the most powerful UU instead.

Just finished my 1st game in more than 18 months. It was fun playing again.

I finished turn 83. Vassaled 5 AI's after eliminating the first. Went the Cavalry route and was surprised how well they did against the rifles.

D'oh! I vassalized the last city and got a domination victory! I am so rusty...when did that change or has that always been the way it worked?

Since Vassal were available, one always got 1/2 the Population and 1/2 the Land of one's Vassals for measuring both Population and Land versus the respective Domination limits.

Yeah, I checked...it put me .8 over the area limit!!

You have my condolences on your accidental Domination Victory. A mere 0.80 of a plot above the Land limit means your Vassal had just 2 plots too many for you to avoid Land Domination.

Ideally, if speed through this thing like you should then Dom should not really be an issue on the obvious map. I know that is easier said than done, if you are less experienced. As Oz mentioned, gifting back cities reduces the land %. You can raze cities as well, which is probably a good idea as you get bigger.

I went Toku with Grens/Rifles and later some cannons. Actually did not use draft that much..mainly for MP and no slavery....just Serfdom then Caste. I felt the game was slow, only turn 60. I'm gonna try Cavs next. Mounted always gives fastest results.

For me, late starts are solely about traits like Spiritual (probably the best in War scenarios and maybe any post-Ren start), not UUs, although as WT says fast workers are the best. I may try Brennus next...I think he would do well here. Gandhi or Asoka is probably the best though. Cyrus might be okay too.

Nice and fast game, i got a t48 win and i'm currently second (guess WT is leading). Had to kill the first opponent with grenadiers as i did not have horses nearby, that slowed me down a bit. Map wasn't special either, got no peacevassals and no special luck with cavarly, i just went for the first 380 map really.

Sub t40 wins are very possible, sub t35 even if you're patient enough and go for lucky victories. Asoka is the best leader for this, you can't really forego spiritual and fast worker is essential for fast chopping.

i hope i find the time to try this again, love a fast and quick AI abuse. I just need 48 hours days...

Yea, fast workers really shine on normal and quick. They can road and chop forest/jungle so much faster. My 1st submission was sub-turn-40.

Waste - what settings do you use?

Edit: Obviously Cavs work for you, WT, but Rifles are cutting mine to shreds. Terrible results. Had like 8 or 9 Cavs very early and hit Pacal who had only 1 Rifle in each city. By the time it was over the original 9 Cavs were gone. Very hard to get any momentum. More turn 50ish victory. I think my map settings may not be ideal either or I'm just having bad luck with AI placement.

This game is also making me very curious about the Cap mechanic. All these wussy AIs are simply not willing to cap even with 1 city and no units and/or me having like 5 times their power.

I also had some difficulty getting Cap from some. I know it's been discussed in gauntlets before. Should probably hunt down some links. SunTzuWu is usually the one to deliver those.
Throw in DeGaulle. He's supposedly a pushover.

I'm not sure what settings you're interested in. I use the Nano-pangaea map.
I get missionaries to spread my religion and run Theocracy. With barracks+stable That gives the Cavs 2 promotions and soon to be 3. CombatI and Pinch. Are you not getting Pinch? My Cavs rolled over the rifles. Sometimes (usually) I didn't even bother with seige. Those units are too slow.

Not sure I'll have time to play this Gauntlet, although an Industrial Era start does sound like fun.

I almost never play with Vassals (use "No Vassals" option), although one would be foolish to play that option for this game.

However, as I understand it, to get quick Capitulations, you want to surround your target with your Vassals. It is generally easier to plan to wipe out your first victum. Your next target should be the one the has the longest border with and your vassals, if any (Repeat this step until victory).

Here's a good article that explains the Vassal System at the time of Warlords v2.08 (I assume there hasn't been any major changes to the Vassal system since then):

Also, one might try to pick some opponents with high unit production percentages like Shaka*, Ragnar*, Mehmed II, Napoleon, Montezuma*, Genghis Khan*, Justinian I, Sitting Bull, etc. The Aggressive ones (*) are probably the best, since they have cheap Barracks and their foot soldiers get free Combat I. They might actually be useful in your war campaigns as Vassals.
