Dark Avatar, the expansion pack for Stardock's award-winning Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords, came out on February 8th. Several reviews have appeared and overall it looks like the expansion is a winner. Here are some review links:
The expansion can be ordered from Stardock's online store for $29.95. There is also a Gold edition that contains both the original game and the new expansion. The price is $39.99 on Amazon.com and $44.95 on Stardock's online store.

So far I've found it a great expansion. GalCiv is a lighter civ type game and I use it when I want a Civ3/4 break but don't feel like playing CoH.
As you learn the game -- the ship designing turns out to be as much fun as playing. Modders have created just about all the expected scifi mods -- it's a mod happy place, just like here.

Honestly, I stopped paying attention once I realized how they were blatantly and flagrantly they were stealing from StarCon2.
Has anyone ever come out and been like, yes, we admit, we're stealing from Star Control, but only because we love it? Maybe that will change my mind...

So why didnt they release this in stores? I hate ordering things because you have to wait at least one day for it to arrive.

Hmm... improved AI, touched up graphics, random events blah blah blah... actually the lis goes on and on, at first it sounds like this its just another expansion but really they added some meat on this one.

Im wishing Warlords took this approach. It really pales in comparision to the overhaul this game got. I still woudn't buy it though, not a sci fi mot my thing, unless its a 5th era in Civ3 ;)

^^and X999 man! Ive been pritty active, how did you get so many more posts in that one month you signed up before me

wow, 18 posts per day on average. That's quite a bit. Must be in a democracy game or in modding or something.

I ordered mine, downloaded and played it the same day; and got the disk the mail 3 days later.

Other issues aside, it's a fun game. If you like Civ you should have fun with this game.

The entire game is creatively void. The techs are called "laser 1", "laser 2", "laser 3", etc. The factions are stolen from other games. Everything about it screams, "I have no creativity and must steal my content".

They deny all counts of stolen content, of course. But I can't believe that they came up with all this stuff without ever having played any previous games.

Civilization has the same lack of creativity, they stole all the civs, techs and units from my history book :crazyeye:

This news restores my hope in video gaming. I'll see about buying the expansion pack as soon as I am able.

I agree, the game has large amounts of modding potential, and that potential is well-utilized by the modding community.

I don't care how great the game is still no LAN feature

But with AI that good, you don't need to play against a human.

What is Star Control like? If it is anything like Galactic Civilizations 2, it must be excellent.

The developers do not have to worry about box costs and inventory when the program is available online. It is also an effective counter-piracy measure.

I would agree with you on the fact that Warlords would be better with the overhaul that Gal Civ 2 is getting from the expansion pack, but I doubt that anything could save Civ4 from a life of monotony :p

Two words: Off Topic.

Once again, he is a frequent poster in the Off Topic forum.

Are stolen tech names enough to bring such a fun game as Gal Civ 2 down? I find many of the names and statements in the game to be fun and whimsical instead of the hard and straightforward lines in the Civilization series.

the only problem i have with that game is the ai, it seems the ai is stupid when it comes to ship designs it makes one u play against it.

if u want a true superb ship design check out my evil capitol ship in the libary of galciv2.com by urs truely brownzie

I will definitely use your capitol ship as soon as I decipher your quote. :)
