The news article thread

While I agree about the tone of the article (I don't know if the writer was being more disrespectful to religious people, the developers or both).

There was something that caught my eye, is this new "Dutch will all make their presence felt - the latter with a full range of dykes, windmills and tulip fields." or is this just hyperbola?

The most likely explanation is that all three make up the Polder unique improvement (as can be seen in one of the screenshots released a while back). This is just a fancy way of writing that.

Has this been confirmed anywhere? Polder UI will probably be my favorite UI in the game. Really looking forward for it. :)

Yeah, the Polder has been confirmed, although its used are brought to us by the whisper down the lane effect of game articles so it's mostly right but we can't be certain.

In the GamesReactor GDC interview with Ed Beach (which is already linked in the first post), at about 4:25 Ed mentions "Pagodas" in the same breath as Cathedrals and Mosques as items that you can purchase with Faith.

He also says (at about 5:18) that Missionaries add religious pressure, and Inquisitors decrease it.

At about 11:00, Ed says that melee naval units CAN attack units on the coast. He also says regarding melee naval units attacking cities, "they can actually go and attack coastal cities, and either pillage them for gold or actually capture them."

"...there's more strategic decisions about who you put up in the front line and whether or not, um, you're gonna actually try to use your naval melee units, which can attack, CAN attack units just on, y'know, like a grassland tile on the shore... but- like a ranged unit can, but- the great things that they can do for you is that they actually can go and attack the coastal cities, and either pillage them for gold or actually capture them."

The way stutters on "can" makes it sound a little like "can't", but that's why he repeats it more clearly... and the "but" seems clearly to me to be the first part of his next thought, with the "like a ranged unit can" being an backtrack to the previous thought.

For example, if you have a spy in Mumbai, he might learn Gandhi is plotting to attack China. That's a valuable piece of intel derived from the AI system itself, and if you then open up a dialogue with China, you have the option to inform Wu Zetian of Gandhi's plans. If you do, you'll gain a friend in the Chinese lady, while the warmonger Gandhi will be less happy with you.

This makes no sense as what good is it, so much for the covert method gameplay.

Wow yeah, that is really REALLY stupid, how would Ghandi know it was you who divulged his attack plans if you were using a spy?

Wu Zetian

e: we aren't really sure how the exact mechanics of espionage work. For all we could know, its that that civ who told Wu is the only civ with spies (thanks to being way ahead of everyone else in tech) and it doesn't take Gandhi to put 2 + 2 to get 5.
