Game keeps crashing

Civ5 keeps crashing early in my game. I did a huge map as Elizabeth and when I clicked on Hiawatha to open diplomacy it turned black and wouldn't respond. Reloaded the save, tried again, this time a full on crash with windows saying it wouldn't respond. So I reloaded again, skipped the diplomacy and got a few turns further before it crashed once more.

My question is, could it be running out of memory? I have plenty left, on a 4gb system windows 7 64bit, but does Civ5 support 64bit memory addressing? Because I've had issues with other games where they crash once they get past a low memory threshold like around 1gb.

I'm doing the steam validate files bit, will see if that helps.

Update: the file validation had to fix something, a download of 5mb, but when I reloaded my last save it still crashed. Any suggestions?

It is not the 64 bit addressing. It is your video card that is crashing. Like The_J said, turn your leader head graphics option to low. Crashing can cause corrupted files and you may have to keep validating until you get, "All files successfully validated" message. Upgrading the video card should solve the issue, or adjusting the leader head graphics down to low.

The game is very intensive on video cards and if you start to get more errors, it is possible that the game has stressed your video card and it will probably get worse.

Just to report a CTD after the patch pretty early in the game DX11

I have not crashed in CiV since vanilla

validating 1 file.... the only thing I have ever changed was city distance.

Your memory may be defective at a certain point where only CivV pushes the limits.

does that mean i need new ram sticks, or better ones, if better ones which do you recommend for my operating system.

Can you check your civ v root directory (where the exe's are) and see if there are any recent .mdmp files located there?

Thanks
