Game of the Year

Urgh. 2009. Now we're hitting the low point of my video game years. I pretty much played EU III, and then EU III some more, with the occasional foray into Pokémon (and one notable foray into Skyrim), for a while there.

Of the games I played that were released in 2009...PvZ was the one I had the most fun with, but it doesn't deserve a vote.

With that I'm going to go with counting Minecraft a 2009 release (first development version), and give it my vote. I may not have played it, but one has got to respect the impact it made.

If it's determined that Minecraft doesn't count, then I'm voting abstain.

Don't think I can count Minecraft as a 2009 game (or it would get my vote), considering it was a "development" version. I'll consider it for 2011.

For 2009 I'm going to go with the co-op wave-based shooter, Killing Floor. The combination of the solid mechanics, huge library of community-made maps, and friendly community in-game - which I've found to be rare in FPS games, and I think is due in part to the co-op nature - has made it one of my most-played FPS's. Admittedly, it took awhile to build up the huge library of maps (now 800+), but it's given the game longevity, and is a great example of how being modding-friendly can help a company.

I remembered yesterday that SteamSpy lets you view the most-owned Steam games by year, which at least for me is a better reminder than Wikipedia's lists, which are cross-platform - and I play 95% PC - and more subjective. Though a caveat is the Steam release date isn't always the initial release date. 2009 is pretty AAA-heavy yet, but has some indies too; some options are:

  • Empire Total War
  • Left 4 Dead 2
  • Torchlight
  • And Yet it Moves
  • Hearts of Iron III

Minecraft doesn'T stand a shadow of a chance of getting my 2011 vote (Skyrim has it locked up), which is part of why I'm voting for it in 2009.

Heh. I played Skyrim for a frankly shocking 500 hours on the Xbox 360 and I'm not even a particularly big fan of the game. :p

I don't think I much bothered with Minecraft after it was released "fully". It was always an infdev game for me.

Well, I guess I'll vote Hearts of Iron 3 for lack of alternatives. The horrible release state and some inherent problems with the mechanics means that I don't honestly want to, but I have ended up playing it very much and it's a very unique and innovative game in many ways.

What about The Sims 3? Will have to vote for it. Havent played that much to any 2009 tittle anyway AFAIK.

Amnesia was 2010.

If I can't vote for Minecraft for some reason, then I'm chipping it towards Killing Floor for all the reasons stated. 190 hours!

Why haven't we moved on?

For those that said Loom was an obscure random 1990 winner, here's a postmortem talk of the technical constraints at the time and why it was such an amazing graphical and auditory production of its time.

The game also featured a throughough rework of the adventure game interface.

I'm at 318, second-highest of my Steam games behind EU4 (although Civ3 non-Steam would also beat it, and probably Civ4 combined Steam/non-Steam too). But basically, my highest of any non-strategy game.

For 2010, I'm leaning towards Mount and Blade Warband so far, assuming it's eligible as a standalone expansion. I've played more Civ5 and Napoleon Total War, but was more impressed by M&B:W, and part of the reason I haven't played it more is not wanted to get addicted to it.

Starcraft 2 definitely gets my vote for 2010.

One of the most mechanically well-executed campaign systems of any RTS game I've played, a well balanced multiplayer which allows ridiculous (and sometimes intimidating) depth of skill, great adrenaline rush, the last great old-school RTS (so far, at least). And it took about four years of steady changes and updates, but they finally ended up with a pretty good arcade system for user-made maps too with some very fun ones in there.

Warband was indeed a standalone and I think it will have my vote too, 270 hours :)

What other notables came out in 2010?

2010 is a bit dry I think. The only 2 games I played were mass effect 2, bio shock 2 and aliens vs predator. Starcraft 2 also came out but I have never played it. There was also COD. I vote mass effect 2. The best of the franchise overall, even though I think 3 is a better game overall, I think 2 had a better story.

Incidentally, the wiki page on these later years is pants compared to the earlier years. The earlier ones you could sort by platform.

As noted earlier, it's Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood for me in 2010.
