Game of Thrones / ASOIAF Mod (v 0.1)

Hi, am having great difficulty getting this to work with Steam. I changed the address of the shortcut to where steam stores Civ4 on my computer ie. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword

unfortunately, it then informs me that A game of thrones is not a valid mod and skips over the poor mod. Any advice on how to circumvent this pigheaded steam attitude?

wish i could help, but i know nothing about steam. does anyone else know how to fix this?

Works fine for Steam on Mac. Not sure why it wont load right on your PC. Try loading from the menu instead of using the shortcut?

Love this mod so far but would recommend at least disabling techs from gunpowder on until you can create a new tech tree. It gets tough with some civs getting gunpowder rather quickly.

Also I dont know if you had a chance to implement the changes you mentioned (vassals and Seven's holy city) but they werent in the file as of yesterday.

Does the Kings road act as a railroad? If not maybe make it do so, and add more routes between existing cities?

Thanks for this.

Actually I'd even disable research altogether, at least for the main War of the Five Kings scenario.

Thanks! No i haven't implemented said changes yet (I will make it clear when an update has occurred). I completely agree about the technologies. I will see if I can do something about that for the next update.

The Kingsroad acts as a normal road, and the reason I will keep it that way is because in the books it is described as little more than a path at some points. The Kingsroad is the main causeway to the north, but it isn't exactly a finished/paved road. I will add some more routes between cities for the next update (especially in the north, I know it can be a pain in the ass to get around up there).

Right now I have a lot of the changes done, but I am experiencing some weird errors trying to reskin some of the units. I will reset those and put reskinning aside for the moment so I can get the corrections out. Hopefully I'll update it sometime in the next couple days or so.

I think the Kingsroad is paved, at least in the South, as well as parts of other important roads such as the Roseroad. Sure, the books mention parts where it's nothing more than a dirt track but that's quite normal even for medieval "paved" roads. Roman roads for example also weren't perfectly paved on their whole way, if terrain didn't allow it.

But it's of course your call, and what you consider best for balance.

<SNIP>

Yeah tried that and it said 'game not available on your platform'. I only seem to be able to play the game at all by loading Steam and then choosing BTS from my games library. I can play on user created maps such as "Westeros", but can't get mods to work alas :mad: It seems to be an ongoing/permanent steam problem judging from research undertaken thus far.

Tinkered with it for a few minutes and now have it working. Looks very good, TheBeast!

I followed the initial instruction to place a particular file in the "Saves" directory. There wasn't one, so I created it. Steam uses different locations though, so I managed to work out a few likely candidates. After putting the file in each of those locations, the game now works!

Thanks all.

@Stannis Awesome

Three more notes:

There seems to be an inaccessible iron under a peak near The Dreadfort

Is it intentional that it should be impossible to capture Old Wyk and Saltcliffe (Greyjoy) since its likely the game would be over before researching Marine?

Since the Twins is supposed to be the only crossing over the Trident for hundreds of miles maybe make the river a coast tile for a few tiles in each direction?

Some feedback.

Setup is great. I really like the map, the cities, the initial armies. Cities are hard to capture (possibly too hard; depends on the patience of the player).

Playing as Dragonstone I've encountered what I consider to be a problem: the diplomatic wonder in King's Landing. What happened to me after a while is a motion went forth that we declare peace, I defied it, and now it's +5 unhappiness for all my cities. Between their small size and a hasty conversion to 'Islam' I have it under control, but with no room to move on that front. Makes the game a bit less enjoyable to play - particularly since I've been besieging Stonedance since the game began and am not keen to throw away the idea of a "Clash of Kings".

Also, Stark and Lanister made peace within ten turns of the game's start, which is a bit out of spirit I think.

@stannis4l: Glad you were able to get it working! In response to your feedback:

-Yes, cities are very difficult to capture. I think I might add a few catapults for players to start with, even if it's not canon, just to make the game more interesting. EDIT: I might even make walls and castles a little less powerful. Maybe 10-15% bonus with walls, and 30-40% bonus for castle?

-As for the "Iron Throne" wonder (aka the Apostolic Palace), I kind of like how much power it gives to the person who controls it. I will look into changing certain aspects of how it works, but I want to make sure that controlling KL is still very important. As Stannis, if I were you, I'd capture KL ASAP :D

-Starks and lannisters love to make peace for some reason. I've made them hate each other, I've made them both aggressive, but they still keep making peace. I'll see what I can do, but I'm running out of ideas.

@Onwiththeshow:

-I probably just overlooked that iron resource. I'll adjust it.

-I hadn't thought about people trying to capture those islands. I suppose I could add another plot of land to each island so players can get siege units on them. I'll consider it.

-I thought about adjusting the terrain around the twins, but it kind of made the map weird. What I did ensure was that you cannot get from the kingsroad to riverrun without either signing open borders with the frey's, or going south all the way around into tully territory. Now, this is no big deal right now, but for the next update I am going to make the Frey's MUCH more demanding in signing open borders treaties. You'll have to really get them to like you before they will let you cross into their territory.

You could always make them permanently at war.

It might also be possible to make them at war for a minimum of 100 turns (for example). At least we'd get a real clash of kings for that long !

Regarding Castles/Walls - I don't think this is particularly a problem. Certainly all the major cities in the books are exceptionally strong (fantastically so, in some cases :).

It would be nice to see the war go on longer, so permanent/long war might be the way to go.

My game is progressing well despite being forced to make peace with Tywin (who had already made peace with everyone else - no cities changed hands). Stonedance, Evenfall Hall and Griffins Roost have all fallen. I beseiged Storm End for a while, but could make no headway at all with catapults (is this how you meant it to be?). Now we're beseiging Mistwood.

Trebuchets are now possible to build, so I'll have a go at Storm End again with those. I've also noticed musketmen starting to pop up. Might need to slow down research somehow as some of the powers can really churn through the research it seems.

Fun scenario still, definitely tonnes of patience required though.:goodjob:

Have you considered using the GameFonts.tga file from another mod like say from Gods of Old to just do away with the real world religion icons? It's an easy step to do while you don't have Song of Ice and Fire specific icons.

Also, if you do plan on an extended timeline that's not narratively consistant with the how the books play out, add in poor
Spoiler :
Ned Stark and Khal Drogo
! That would be sweet. Also, a Dothraki civ would be just the Mongolians. Special units like dragons can be a unitclass of their own that other civs don't have access to (like how Barbarians are set up in the Civilizations xml).

(I'm really excited to see a Mac friendly GoTs mod for CIV so I hope that all came out coherently)

Great mod Beast. This is my first time using a mod and I have some installation issues. The map and names are all there but the custom banners and leaderheads are not. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Scenario works, mod crashes at start up. I am running on Windows 7 - 3.17 patch. It crashes if I use the link and if I load the mod from the menu. All of the mods included in BTS work fine. This is my crash report. Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum !

I'd advise you to update to the latest version of Civ manually here : http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=323831
If you download it ingame it can cause some problems.

If the Civ version you're using is not the problem : did you follow the instructions from the first post closely ?

I needed the 3.19 patch. Game is running and I had a blast as Greyjoy slowly conquering all the islands.
