Game of Thrones, season 6

I'm not too concerned about it, I understand that for obvious time and budget constraints the show cannot go into so much details like the books. It's only a few of the gripes I have with what has been in my opinion a great season so far...

He still could be Brynden Rivers in the show, it's just that this is not yet explained or not explained at all for budget reasons...According to the books, he was teaching Bran about greensight and skinchanging, but in the show, he clearly ran out of time because of Bran's shenanigans...Perhaps we would get some better explanation later, in a flashback or something...
He's credited as Bloodraven I believe. So yes same guy.

I believe GRRM has stated that the world of his novels is a spheroid globe like that of Earth, but it is somewhat larger and has never yet been circumnavigated.

If that's the case and it's really larger than earth then there is a heapload of unexplored territory. Westeros is only about 1000 miles wide at it's widest point. Essos is only about 3000 miles wide then. That would make the known world the equivalent of like eurasia, not even reaching the edge of china. And if the world is bigger than earth, well then essos must extend a lot further, there has to be a 5th continent out there somewhere as well kind of like the americas (I say 5th cus I think sothoryos and ulthos are continents). The actually world could be like 5 times more than the known world.

From the season trailer, and battle of Winterfell:

Link to video.

-0.53 has some emblematic Bolton crosses, burning, likely to shame/lure the Stark side into a battle under unfavourable conditions? Maybe one of those burning is Rickon.

-1.42 doesn't make that much sense, given the Wildlings are not horses, and they would not just freeze in front of (not that densely packed either) spears :mischief:

Other:

-1.07 seems to be a flashback about the mad king.

So who's coming to the rescue for Bran and Meera? Benjen Stark? Coldhands? More children of the forrest? Giants?

May I just point out that this has way, way better visuals than the Tower of Joy lightsaber video?

(Sorry for the link, it won't play on the forums.)

Good find. The Tower of Joy fight was...difficult to watch.

Not sure if it will fall at all or if the Septon wasn't just a chessmaster playing these nobles right where he wanted them, and it's the Lannister/Tyrell who will crash and burn.

One way or another, the Sparrows will be scattered. Whether it be by the light of R'hlor or the blades of Westeros.

Bran is clearly commentary on the audience. He climbed the wall and introduced us to the royal twincest, he goes into expository flashbacks. Let him be a warning that our subordination to the screen cripples us, and that in maintaining our privilege as spectators we inadvertently harm those less socially favoured than us.

I do wonder - Is there any possibility for the Hound to be still alive? I hope for it, he was a nice guy.
Book 4 content spoiler
Spoiler :

According to a chapter in book 4, the Hound is almost certainly still alive. Look up "grave digger theory" for more info. Though the tone is that he won't return to any of the events of the ASOIAF story. Which is why the whole thing will probably be left out of the tv series.

Spoiler on that note :
Ian McShane has been pretty much confirmed as Septon Meribald, and said in an interview that he was going to be bringing another character back.

I mean, it might not be the Hound, but, well...all you need to do to see what happens when the showrunners try to keep secrets and be sneaky is look at the Jon Snow fiasco.

I suspect it's a double bluff. I remember seeing the 'blurb' for one of the recent episodes include the phrase 'the Night's Watch stand behind Sir Alastair'. On watching the episode, we realised that they were talking about the entrance of the giant - when the watchmen did indeed stand - quite a long way - behind their leader.

The problem is, he apparently wasn't supposed to say that and halfheartedly tried to backtrack later in the interview. Overall, it seems like the sort of thing that the producers probably wouldn't actually do; he's isn't a Company Man who'd fake an accidental spoiler (he's openly cynical about the whole thing and seems to regard it chiefly as a paycheck for being on a "t*ts and dragons" show), and they're probably not capable of playing those kinds of games in the first place.

And today we got the least unexpected character and reveal about him! In a single episode! Take that GRRM.

I don't want to see anything else of Sam Tarly. Please Lord Tarly kill him already. Inb4 Dorne invades the Reach and Lord Tarly sorely misses his Valyrian steel sword as he is impaled with a spear by one of the Snakes, followed by a very crappy one-liner.

In other news, I liked dragonrider Dany, and facepalmed at the sheer incompetence of the Tyrell-Lannister twins plot. Of course you couldn't make sure that the king stayed in the Red Keep before you set out for your show-off with the Faith Militant.

I think CleganeBowl is all but evident to everyone by now. They would have introduced the other champion by now, with all of this time devoted to the Faith Militant.

I have the opposite opinion about both of these things.

Tommen is a total tool and because of him and the Sparrows, the King's Landing scenes have officially become my second-least-favorite part of the show. I'm not even sure what allying the Crown and the Sparrows even means that it didn't before. Maybe it's giving too much credit to the showrunners to point this out - hopefully it isn't - but the High Sparrow definitely has the minutes of the Small Council, because the whole 'waiting to unveil the alliance between Crown and Sparrows until after the Tyrells and Lannisters show up' thing makes zero sense unless he already knows that the Tyrells and Lannisters were going to show up. Not sure how that works, since Tommen was kept out of the loop and Margaery wouldn't have been able to know unless she suddenly got the ability to talk to Olenna. Which, for what it's worth, is also disappointing: either Olenna's been defanged, which is a shame, because she was awesome in Season 3, or she's running a deep game with Margaery. Also, Mace's hat is great.

As was said before, nothing about Benjen was particularly surprising. Nothing about Dany was surprising either, but it was far less watchable. Arya also had a fairly unsurprising sequence that falls more into the "ugh, finally" category than anything else. It'll be nice to not have to watch the plays anymore. One Ember Island episode was enough.

I actually thought the deal that Sam's dad offered him was better than expected: he didn't kick Gilly out, or use her and Sam and Little Sam as hostages to hold over Jon (because he's a good Lannister vassal). I mean, he's obviously still a pretty terrible guy. But still. I think Jon is going to be expecting more out of Sam's little expedition than one extra Valyrian steel sword.

Gonna be interesting if Jaime and Brienne meet up again in the Riverlands. Gonna be weird if Jaime's visit turns out the same way it does in the books. Gonna be nice to see Bronn again, even if he isn't Fancy Bronn anymore.

Looking forward to Dark Phoenix going on a recruitment mission in the North next episode, too. And to Tormund convincing the free folk to be the meat shield at the Bastard Bowl.

I give this episode a 6/10. Halfway decent, and moving at a significantly faster clip than pretty much anything in Seasons 4 and 5, and chock full of WTH moments both good and bad.
