Game still going....

So I won a space race victory in 2028 and decided to keep the game going til 2050 just to see if I could win a diplomatic victory. Well here we are in 2072 and the game is still going. What's up with that?

As you may have noticed in real life, time doesn't end.

But you cannot achieve any additional victories.

i've got an engaging game going on in 2171AD on a large terra map. the only victory conditions i've got turned on are diplomatic, conquest, and domination.

now, i spent most of my efforts making sure that i own 95% of the new world. this stopped me from conquest in the old world until the 1950s, and as a result of all of this, the game has been dragging on and on and on. i think i've been playing for over 30 hours.. but hell.. it's been FUN. i own 53% of all of the land now and 60% of the population, so i'm getting there.

usually in civ3 i wouldn't even continue playing for the win, but civ4 has somehow managed to make it fun all the way into this very late stage of the game.

i did do some conquering before the advent of astronomy; i destroyed the french.. but the other powers in the new world were just as strong as me, until i was able to bring in reinforcements from the new world (once it was ready to supply the old world).

The reason I ask is because it says in the manual that "the game ends, usually around 2050."

Once you've said "Just... one... more... turn" then the game will go on forever regardless if the time goes out or you win a diplomatic victory. The game has already ended when you won a Space Race victory.

The date of 2050 is just the time limit for winning/losing the game. At the year 2050, if none of the other victory conditions have been met, whoever has the most points wins the game.

But win or lose you can keep on playing as long as you want. It's just that there are no more victory conditions after that point.

Correction: If Histographic victory is turned on and no other victory has been won yet, then the game ends in 2050 with the winner being the player with the most points.

If Histographic victory is turned off, the game will keep going indefinitely until some other victory is won.

Personally, I like turning off everything but Domination and Conquest - 2050 leaves me short on action and Space Race/Diplomacy is too ... carebear.

Wow! That is good to know. Now I can turn off the time victory and dominate the world at my own pace.

I wonder what happens with the score if you don't get a domination victory 'till after 2050. Is it guaranteed to be a Dan Quayle?

My preferance for modern warfare pretty much means I rarely score more than maybe 3-4k points with a win.

Amazing how 8 hours at work can seem like 16, yet 4 hours on Civ4 seems like 1. Now, if I could just get paid to play Civ4, I'd be a happy camper.
