Hello Fellow Die Hard Civ 5 Fans,

Mods: If this thread does not belong here go a head and delete.

I wanted to get some feed back from all of you if there are similar games which competes for market share with Civ 5 BNW. I am not asking for simcity or other sim games but something relative to this game. Where History plays a huge role and that you cannot advance until previous techs have been discovered etc.

Need to know...Civ 5 BNW is the pc game I play. Looking to see what else on the market might strike my fancy.

Thanks

Brew God

Europa Universalis IV, has a lot technologies and social policies (called "ideas"), too, and has a rather historically accurate setting, with a lot of background information.

I wouldn't compare EU IV to Civ V, it's a different kind of beast. It's much more complex and it is historically accurate (at the start at least). If you are unfamillar to Paradox games, watch a few let's plays/tutorials on youtube because the in-game tutorial is rubish.

Warlock 1 and 2 are pretty close to Civ 5, but somewhat more basic, they are like let's copy Civ 5 and make it a fantasy theme.

Galactic Civilizations 2, with Galactic Civilization 3 in alpha right now. Space setting, but a good 4X game in my opinion.

I don't know, galciv is really luck based compared to civ5. I started next to 5 habitable planets, you have none nearby, so I win automatically because of the map generator. I hope they make all planet types colonizable in galciv 3. You can build colonies on asteroid belts, why not Mercury?

There's also the Warlock games, and Age of Wonders III which just released (Get it. Support Dutch game devs.) Both are in the same vein if with a fantasy setting and more slanted towards war.

There is a game called Pandora that exists and is Civilization-like... I have not played it yet
Sadly, the AI is a tragedy if it's even worse than Civ 5's, forget it...
Might want to try Stardock's Fallen Enchantress & Legendary Heroes. Their graphics are a generation behind civ v's & AI is weak, but they have interesting fantasy features

EE II or EE III could be similar to civ. Other games that could be similar are starcraft or Age of Empires.

It's not historical, but if you (or anybody else reading this) like turn-based 4X games and fantasy, check out:

It was released about a month ago, and I've really been enjoying whenever I get a chance to play it. It's also getting a lot of support from Triumph Studios; one patch has already been released and a massive beta patch has recently been available to download.

If you like playing Civ, you will most likely enjoy playing EU4. Sure, they're very different in playstyle, but the country-guiding, role-playing, empire-building competition is there for sure.

X-Com Enemy Unknown is also worth a play.

Paradox's semi-historical games: Crusader Kings II, Europa Universalis IV, Victoria II, Hearts of Iron III (soon to be IV).

I second this. I've been playing this lately and it's like Civilisation 5 with magic, Orcs and elves! Oh and hobbits! It has a wonderful set of custom game options.

It plays very similar to Civ. The only problem I have is the high fantasy learning curve as anything goes in this game! Forget reality!

Also neither are you forced onto Steam if you want more freedom when and where you play your game (and your access to the net is limited). I only wish Firaxis had done this.
