Gary's Poser Unit Creation Thread and Workshop

Gary
your last preview looks very good and I think you are right about problem in fading unit colors.
I've just two small remarks ans one question

R1) ARVN color looks a bit too...yellow but I undestand the need make this shade of green clearly distinguishable from others

This is a little less yellowish.

The ARVN guy is wearing a cap. I looked in the Osprey book and the two pics of early ARVN infantry show the men in caps instead of helmets. I was thinking perhaps a cap would be a good way to differentiate between units.

last post for today ;)
Cap would be very good for officers if you want to make them but I do not think anyone would be happy go into battle with a cap... Are your pics related to battle dress or to some other kind of service uniform?

They will be battle dress. So helmet it is...

I'm making the ARVN units just a shade smaller than the US units. About a pixel or two difference in height. Here's a comparison between the US Army Rifleman and an ARVN Airborne trooper:

I'm sort of vexed on this one. I've tried to redo the Vietcong AK-47 rifleman I had before. I'm not sure I like the new attack animation very well, though. I may redo the attack and default for this unit. The rest of the animations are OK I think.

So I'm sort of split on whether to go ahead and release what I have completed or make the corrections first before releasing it. I guess I could eventually release it all as one unit with several different animations to choose from.

Not sure if he would be best as a VC rifleman or as a sapper (since he carries a large pack, presumably with explosives, etc.)

What do others think of him compared to my prior Vietcong rifleman from a couple years ago? Improvement...no difference?

EDIT: Below is the original VC rifleman. To me he seems relatively stiff and not as well animated compared to my newer units.

The animations have improved, but both models are fine.

Can you please include a civ colored version? I can really use a Vietcong.
Also a work animation would be nice, like clearing jungles, or making a road. But I don't know if that would be too hard.

I see improvement in animations tough the original one was good enough too.
I would only ask you not to include backpack in your "standard" VC infantry. Vietcong were not a regular army and use of this piece of equipment was VERY rare. Even regular NVA infantry and sappers seldom used it.
While NVA sappers may look as "elite assault troops", with additional piece of equipment and weapons, VC sappers had a much more "irregular" look. Quite often they were wearing civilian clothing and acted as "saboteurs", also many times they were women. So I would not overburden VC sapper gfx with lot of heavy stuff.
I second the idea for a work animation too.

Final question. The black uniform looks a bit "lighter" than the original one. Is it true or just an effect of gray background in your preview? The old black looks ok to me

Both are looking fine to me. :)
If I'm allowed to make a small request, I'd love to see a simple Vietnamese infantryman with hat and a simple WW2 era rifle. It could be used
a) as simple early NVA conscript or Viet Cong and
b) as WW2 era Infantry for Vietnam in epic games.

I'm using your VietCong unit in my mod (thanks Gary!) and I'd love to see the old C&P Nam rifleman replaced as well (C&P infantry with a china hat). :)

@ ShiroKobbure: I'll see if I can do a satisfactory work animation.

@ Wolf_66: The black is a little lighter due to the sharpening process in PSP which I'm using.

@ Ares: A VC with a bolt action rifle is in my plans, however, we all know how plans go sometimes. :(

IIRC French IndoChina pretty much rolled over in WW2. What might be a better fit would be a Viet Minh soldier. Color photos of such are scarce online, but I managed to find the attached.

Best,

Which one of these looks better? Personally I like the stance of the one on the left better. To me the one on the right looks like he's in a casual environment like a shooting range or something.

So I will go with the guy on the left then. I'm wondering, should I adjust the recoil so that there is a little more pronounced recoil. He just seems to shake right now.
