General A New Dawn discussion

(Just to say it is easier to point out the problems than to fix them :x)

In this mod i can destroy city in my empire? If i can - how? I have wrong-placed and wont destroy it like in civ3.

open up city screen, crtl + a, abandon city

There's an exploit in abandoning a conquered city. If you conquer a city, and choose "wait, let me see it first" instead of raze or keep, you can ctrl + A from there, destroy all the buildings for cash and abandon the city to get workers/settlers. The opponents don't consider it a raze, so there's no diplomatic penalty.

Ctrl+a, abandon city. You can either destroy buildings or abandon city.

I have to say, I use Cntl-A all the time when I take a city.

Well 1st, I see if its on my planned city dot map.

2nd if it has any important mods ie Great Generals x < 2, Wonders *Bah!!!*, Holy Cities, *Hmm, really keep nearly ALL*.

If not, its Cntl-A and it goes down the build list Alphabetically.

Great way to make extra gold from your conquests, as you get 20% of the build cost returned to you as gold, no build cost = Free cash flow for ME!!!!!!

Didn't realize about the non diplomatic penalty, it is a cheat and should be removed. Unless you have > 50% of Culture, then its your own city, and penalties SHOULDN'T APPLY.

Uh, I very seldom do it but I thought we removed gold from destroying buildings a long time ago as it was kind of cheating

Edit: checked, it says 0 gold but you actually get some.

Where can I change the font size for city names and builds on the main map?
They've become a tad smaller than I'd like (or maybe the font has become too thin, I'm not sure)

Which language do you use ? If you use Italian or English, nothing should have changed. BTW, do you play on Windows ?

English (it feels actually kinda weird to me to play civ in Italian, go figure. Probably because all the civs I ever had since I was a kid were in English).

Anyway now that I restarted the game again, the text looks normal again. I've no idea what was going on.

I think your file authorization problems have critical consequences on the launcher functionnalities.

From my POV, I'm always at the top of the ladder (not using High to Low). I've noticed the AI is somewhat resistant in war and manage to keep up in research and military (if it has enough cities).
The main problems to me are that AI wars don't progress (I would like to see some AI steamrolled, but not by me :D) and that AI isn't a real military threat to me (good at defence but poor at offense). I also think the score calculation should be rewritten to reflect military, buildings and research more than contacts and land discovery. I haven't look at it yet.
Yeah I noticed the AI is pretty weak in that area. When I am preparing to take over another civ I should switch to Warrior Caste (or Vassalage or Volunteer Army depending on civic availability) and have every city crank out units like mad, and with that army I can just take over an entire civ (and probably the world, if it weren't for managing revolutions haha). Usually they just have units spread out, so it's easy to mow them down. And to top it all off I have gunpowder units while others still have Macemen.
I will try High to Low and Flexible difficulty. But with all the bonuses of the AI it feels like they would just be "cheating" more than providing a challenge :undecide:

Maybe some, but I think a lot of North-American nations would fit other civics much better. I think the starting civics are supposed to be somewhat lackluster to encourage players to move on from them, while the rest of the civics are supposed to be balanced for various strategies. My understanding has been that the starting civics represent organizing structures of very small civilizations that haven't yet needed to develop more complicated organization. It doesn't make sense for later civs to use them. And unless you use very euro-centric definitions for civics like republic and monarchy, they actually cover many civs very well, including North American ones.

I suppose you're right on that. But I'd still like there to be atleast some carrot in the early civics.

Oh hey, I forgot to mention, the new Virtual civic is cool, but why the 20% culture bonus? Also, wonder Independence Hall unlocks it (with all other legislative civics)... and this occurs during the time the telegraph is invented, so virtual voting with advanced computers isn't technically possible (speaking historically).

Love the improvements!

Virtual is designed to do what it does. First of all, one of my rules is Wonders cheat. Wonders get to do things that aren't normally possible, like free buildings, global bonuses, or unlock every civic in a category.

Second, Virtual is designed so that it is NOT a good idea if you get it early. Most of its other abilities are negative; extra war weariness, extra unhappiness from taxes, high upkeep and increased maintenance from cities - the reduced maintenance from city distance is supposed to be a mitigator, and I'm very curious to see how these two play against each other. The strengths of Virtual are it is a big reducer of revolution and its civic building functions as a non-unique Palace; but if you play with No Revolutions and without Civic Buildings, then there is virtually no reason to adopt it. The +20% culture is for those cases, or if you want to bite the bullet and try Virtual through IH.

I'm seeing the same problem. I'm using the very latest revision (908) and I am not using any kind of installer or launcher. I export from my SVN to a backup folder and then copy the Assets folder from there to my Mods folder.

@Vokarya: You have two solutions:
Launch the launcher once in your play folder. Wait 5s and quit. It should fix it all by itself.
OR:
Fix it manually. The black interface is due to a change in the interface system. Edit Assets\Modules\MLF_CIV4ModularLoadingControls.xml and change "Interface" to 1. It will now load the Interface folder. You can easily change interface color in the launcher options if you want to change color. This change has drastically reduced the number of files. "1" is default so SVN must have messed up something here. Evidence here.
The second step is to change the city billboard font rendering:
In Assets\XML\Art\CIV4ArtDefines_Misc.xml change <Type>CITY_BILLBOARDS</Type> "fScale" from -1.0 to 1.0. It will disable the font rendering on billboards (that was needed for non-default language because it's the only way to render characters. "-1.0" is default because it's safer but when the launcher is started, this parameter is changed according to the language in use. Maybe the team prefers the default behavior even if it's less safe ?

Special note for Vokarya: The game now supports to read full UTF8 and convert it to the locale in use on the PC. All characters can be entered in the XML text files in their pure form, except < and > which should stay < and &rt; because they would break XML tags. " can be " or a litteral quote (I don't have this one on my keyboard). You probably have noticed Chinese, Russian or Greek in their "normal" form in the text files.

The Interface module is already set to 1. Is there another way to fix it without the launcher?

Yes. If the Interface module is already loaded, set your RGBA value in Assets\Modules\Interface\Resource\Themes\Civ4\Civ4Theme_Common.thm
Code:
 GColor	.BG =	GColor( 92, 138, 121, 255) :	GFC_Control_Color;	//Set for dynamic color change

Predefined sets are in Assets\Modules\Interface\colorSets.xml
