Okay, I'm still only playing on the 2nd lowest difficulty level, but winning easily so about to go to the third. I'm a real new player.

My strategy is basically this:
- Research to get a religion first
- Research to get Archery
- Research to get Pottery
- Research to get Alphabet
- Streamline your research advances as best as possible to get Culture buildings and Panzer tanks.

Once I get Alphabet, I trade techs like a madman to get the early lead on techs. 5 cities seems like a decent early game number, with 3 hopefully near resources and near the "middle" of the map. Cities 4 and 5 are usually backfillers.

Once I get tanks I go on a pillaging spree, but don't take out cities, catapults and cannons are extremely frustratingly slow. I prefer going for the Cultural victory if possible.

Can someone give me some obvious adjustments to make this a better strategy?

Eh... This isn't much of a strategy. All you're saying is to research a few things early, and then get Panzers.

Your strategy is somewhat feasible on the lower levels, but it won't hold up on the higher ones. For starters, you won't have any research advantages. Second, you'll have to do a lot more than just streamlining and founding five cities early on in order to be competetive with the AI. By the time you have tanks, you're going to want to pretty much have the game won, or have a good path to victory. Starting warmongering then is an incredibally risky maneuver.

Go to the Research Advisor....click "Future Tech"...then tell him to come back in 5,500 years...

You know, sometimes during the course of the game... When you fight one AI, you're fighting all of them...

Just because you have a UU tank don't mean squat if your civ is under production... Even if you're the biggest empire (more the reason AI will hate your guts) you can't fight two at the same time...

AI almost always have an ally... The one time you choose to attack, you'll lose out on everything scientifically and you'll spend a lot of time producing tanks...

Not to mention by that time, mech infantry is only what 20 turns away? By time I get to tanks, I usually get to mech infantry so fast even on epic games that I never really get to use them...

War don't win you much once the game gets harder... It's all about defense in Civ IV...

Friedrich der Grosse. Frederick der Grosse just sounds wrong.

Blitz means you can attack several times the same turn. All tanks get that though, panzers just get an extra 50% against armored units. Should let them rip through mechanized infantry and other tanks.

I've been pretty satified with Samurai (two free first strikes, plus the free Combat I promotion of the Aggressive trait) and Skirmishers (archer with and extra point of power - big difference early) so far. Knowing that Panzers can get the job done late if warring becomes necessary can free one to pursue a building strategy with Germany.

I would recommend getting bronze working early, however, as forest chops can make the difference between a good start and a sluggish one.
