Getting Leaders

Now, this is something really weird: I'm playing the French on Satya's world map, I'm on north America, and I had some hard time with constant barbarian raids attacking my newly-founded cities on the northern parts of south America. Really not a challenge for my rifleman/infantry, but still - my workers and improvments are in danger, and I cannot allow this to happen. So, here what I did - I built 2 cavalries, and sent them to wipe off the many barbarian villages on south America. Now, how they did on that task isn't important; let's just say that after 10s of dead barbarians and 3-4 villages destroyed, both of my elite cavalries were killed while retreating for re-healing. Anyway, what I wanted to know is this - since both of the cavalries were elite after 2-3 fights each, and since they did killed many barbarian horsemen, I haven't got any leader! So, I wanted to know - is it important what is your unit and the enemy unit to be considered in the leader-getting process? I mean, if my warrior have beaten a spearman, will it have more chances of getting a leader than if my cavalry have defeated a warrior? And can you get a leader for beating an attacking unit (your unit was attacked and won, you will you have a change to get a leader)?

The reason you did not get any leaders in that situation is because you cannot get leaders from battles with barbarians. You must fight and defeat a unit from another civ to get a leader.

As for your question, i dont know if the types of units matters when generating a leader, but i do know that you can get a leader from a defensive battle. The only problem is that the AI will do its best to kill that leader before you get a chance to use it.
