GIMP for Mac

I made a discovery last night, that being that GIMP, the open source, i.e. FREE, image processing software, now runs on the later editions of the Mac OS software. It will not run on Mac 10.5.8, so I assume that it runs on probably Mac OS 10.6 and later.

So, courtesy of Quintillus, there is not only a Civilization Editor for the Mac, but now GIMP as well. Has the Millennium arrived without my noticing it?

I think GIMP has been available for Mac at least since 2007, probably before that as well.

But there have always been excellent image editing programs (Photoshop for example) available for Mac. The only real good thing about GIMP is that it's free.

According to GIMP, they released the Mac version on in December 2013. I have Photoshop, and have used a Photoshop Elements, and a few other programs. However, I have run into this thing called processor change to Intel, and then no emulator for PowerPC programs as the OS keeping changing. Free is a very good thing, as I had to buy my wife a new laptop to run some of her business software, a new printer (she tends to wear out printers with her tax accounting business), a new scanner to get my publishing business going again, along with a few other things. As it is, I have to borrow my wife's new laptop to run GIMP, as it will not run on mine with the older OS. I need to older OS to run some of my other software.

I guess the GIMP from Dec. 2013 is just the newest version, since I've been running GIMP on my Mac for some years. I'm using an old version though, from 2008.

Totally agree that GIMP is good because it's free. I don't even use any other programs myself these days. It's not great, but good enough.

Been using it for years also. I'm not satisfied with some of the latest interface changes, but still running the latest version for the sake of some of the filters.

The one lack I wish I knew the solution to is how to use something like tom2050's terrain making script from Photoshop. The only solutions I've seen in gimp forums are (1) buggy & (2) require scripting knowledge to install.

It looks like I have been missing this for a while then. Is it still possible to get a version that will run on Mac OS 10.5.8. The current one that I downloaded requires 10.6, which I have on my wife's laptop, which she has graciously allowed me to use. I have to keep 10.5.8 so as to run some of the older software that i still use.

My wife has been using GIMP a bit on her Mac laptop (not sure what version of the OS but about a year old) but it won't let her name files properly when saving them. When she tries to save and type a file name only some characters work and most do nothing. Very strange. Haven't yet looked up how to fix it though as she doesn't really care.

Never heard of that one. Have you checked the GIMP forums - I've had good luck with support from that community.

nick0515... I believe you have to "Export" rather than "Save" a file in Gimp, otherwise Gimp uses its programed format. Although this concerns File Formats it might be the problem your wife is experiencing.
I do not use Gimp but understand some things about it from Friends that do.

Vuldacon is correct. "Export" is now required to save in anything but the xcf format.

Yes exporting is what I should have said not save. So that is what we were doing. I find that really annoying that I can no longer save in pcx format and have to export each time. I should try saving in the native GIMP format and see if she still can't name files properly.

EDIT: oh just saw your reply BM. Thanks might try that.

I agree that it's annoying to have such a rigid save/export distinction. I usually end up saving until I'm about to truly need the other format, then exporting. It does have the advantage of leaving a separate file as a backup.
