GK2- The Training Day Experiment

I have a wedding to go to today, so I can't put my long term plans for the game for a while... there are some thing I want to look over again... We need reduction in corruption buildings... ie - Courthouses and Police Stations... When I was playing any city that was less then 70% corrupt I would build a courthouse... anything more then that it will never be really worth fixing up... keep training workers from those cities.

Scout: Actually, I mentioned the Cossak in my original post. If we have a significant tech lead, and we should given the size of our empire, we can hit Russia before they even reach Military Tradition.

Long Term Goals
1.) Fortify our island. Improve the cities to their highest potential

4.) Set-up for the double win of U.N and Space. and possibly the tri-fecta and throw in the domination kicker to boot

Long term goals:

1. Build infrastructure. Specifically, develop core and second-core cities to be effective producers via high population and productive improvements (factories, etc.) Have at least a couple coastal cities with high production to build navy. Some of these cities will build military units during the mid game and then SS components during the end game. The others will build wonders.

2. With the advent of cavalry, attack Russia with a mix of cavalry, cannons, and navy. (Why Russia? France will have the strongest Middle Ages defender- Musketeers. We should be ahead in tech enough by then that Russia won't have Cossaks.)

3. Keep on good terms with Germany and, if necassary, gift them into the Indy Age and trade for their free tech. (Two alternatives: A) Declare on Germany and take their free tech for peace, B) leave Russia with a couple cities and take their free tech. Or, take both free techs, if they are different.)

4. Build markets and banks in cities producing 2 or more gold. Make sure we build Smith's Trading Company.

5. In corrupt cities, focus on population growth- more population means more power.

:goodjob:s Good answers, as far as they go. But remember, God is in the details.

I'd like to preface my following answers with the fact that they are how I would play one of my personal games IF I were planning a Space win. I am not very good at milking a game and have never really paid attention to score until playing in the SGOTM (and we received the wooden spoon there).

Long term goals if this were my personal game. I will break my goals down to specific units, towns and builds.

Overall plan: No more wars, get our Empire to max out on gold potential, build specific wonders to help with gold, beeline to space with no stopping at un-needed techs. For me at this point of the game it's all about the bling. More cash means more research means quicker tech means getting out of the solar system quicker.

1.) Workers: After finishing off the Persians set-up worker groups to maximize my existing cities and make sure that every citizen has a workable tile (this would occupy my workers up to the time of steam). Cities that are in the first two rings of both the Palace and Forbiden Palace would get a mixture of shield improvement and food improvements. The outer cities concentrate more on food improvements to get the cities as large as possible. (AlanH makes us repete the mantra "Food = Power" before every turn set in Jump Masters)
I would set up two to three towns that have high food potential and small shield potential to become worker pumps. These cities would be used to create workers to join into the cities in our two cores (thanks to Northern Pike for this technique, SGOTM2 Team Scout) With this technique cities around the forbidden palace and the palace can be raised to their full population potential quite quickly.
When steam comes group workers to first make a transit network from one side of the island to the other(both north and south and east to west) concentrating on unit movement, incase we do get attacked units can be moved quickly to the problem areas. Once that is completed work on getting all worked tiles in my two cores railed first, then working outward to the more distant towns.
Once the rail network is completed a small group 15-20 workers will be kept to play "whack-a-mole" when polution pops up it's ugly head. The rest of the workers either get added to cities after Hospitals are built to increase population, or get disbanded to save gpt on upkeep.

2.) Military:Once Persia is gone I would disband most of our swords and any warriors left hanging around and only keep a force of fast units around big enough to keep the other island from getting any ideas about a naval invasion. This of course only comes after getting to republic (no more need for MP). Outer ring cities will build arti that can be scattered around our land mass to hit any ships that may have ideas about invading us. Spears get upgraded to the most current defensive unit available as do the fast units. Once in the late industrail age build nothing but tanks and upgrade them to MA. (I love MA) I have never found a need to build much of a Navy at this point or an Air Force. I normally build a few just because I like the looks of them.

City Improvements:
First ring cities: will get most all improvements available. Granary - Marketplace - Lib - Aqueduct (if needed) - Bank - Universities - Hospitals - Factory. I will also do courthouses if it has more than one wasted shield and mass transit if I'm having a problem with the cities polution.

Outer cities: Courthouse - Marketplace - Lib - Uni - Aqueduct - Hospital - Police station if it will make a difference in corruption. These get done much slower but I will occasionally rush some of these if it will improve the gold output of that city.

Techs:
Middle Ages:
I beeline to Gun powder (great trade bait) first and then take the high road to Democracy and then try to be first to Theory of Gravity
Industrial Age:
Beeline to Electronics. I do not pick up any non-requisite techs in the modern era. I let the opposition do this for me. Once I get towards the end of the modern era I stop selling techs to the other civ's (unless I am gettig short on cash for research)
Modern Age:
Fission (to build the UN) Rockerty - Space fight, and then the rest of the needed techs to build the Alpha-centuri-mobile
By the middle of the Industrial Age I am normally turning all of the techs in 4 turn and rarely or never getting beat to a tech.

Wonders:
Smith's - Hoover - ToE - UN are the ones I will try the hardest to get
Leo's - Copernicus' - Bach - Newton's - Seti are nice but normally not a must to win

Small Wonders:
Wall Street - Inteligence Agency - Iron Works (ooh I love when I can build that one - 150 shield per turn city  )

I have won 4 or 5 space races on Monarch and this was my plan of attack. I have been wanting to move up to Emperor to see if it will still work there but I don't have time because of SG's. Look this over and give me your opinion on what I'm doing right or wrong.

Sorry I could not go into more detail with city names and the such but I don't have the game infront of me right now. I'm flying over Colorado and typing this on my lap top. I'll send it to you guys when I land.

Well, this has become the longest thread in the forum, and I change my prediction to 300 pages. What's scary is that this thread has low spam.

I bet you scared away a lot of people with the length... I won't be able to find this post again.

:goodjob:, Mistfit.

You have really described the "Stairway to Heaven".

Now we need to nail down the specifics, i.e where, and in what order.

That's the tough part. It is also IMO not somthing that can be planned out like a map to follow. This I think is a bit more intuitive and has to be done on the fly. Yes we can look ahead and say that we want a prebuild in our best shield producing city for the U.N., but saying that it should be in Nara -vs- Grand Siver is speculation as there are to many things can screw that up in between now and then.

BTW you are missing a "t" in Mistfit - no biggie

I won't be helping you much there. Even when I've tried, I haven't done well with the score portion of the game. Sir Pleb is the man there.

@Mistfit: Sir Pleb's "Maximizing Score" article in the War Academy contains a "how-to" on milking. I milked COTM1, and posted in the spoiler about it. Though I learned a bit, it can get tedious (fair warning).

The principles of a milked game/histographic win are simple:

1) Conquer as much of the world as you can, as early as you can, while staying under the domination limit.
2) After the conquest phase, maximize population, particularly the number of happy citizens in the empire.

The important things are always simple, the simple things are always hard. That early conquest is the difference between an award winner and an "also-ran" like me. :D In COTM1 I neglected my navy, and didn't get the other continent dealt with until the 1400s or so. The early conquest is a phase of the game I'm still working on.

In any other type of win, the victory date is very important due to the early win bonus. Look at GOTM31, in which Sir Bugsy and I both turned in Diplomatic wins. Bugsy turned in a win that was a couple hundred years earlier than mine, which put him in the top... quartile I think. My result was somewhere in the middle of the pack.

Scoring concepts, "ceteris paribus" (all other things equal) comparing two games:

1) Given equal dates, the player with more territory will have a higher score.
2) Given equal territory/happy citizens, the player with the earlier win date will have the higher score.

Edit: The reason we had such a dismal Jason score in SGOTM2 is because we didn't conquer Russia early like so many other teams did. They had more territory early, and this contributed to their scores. We chose to leave Russia alive in the hope that they might help speed up the tech pace. If we had been playing PTW instead of Vanilla it might have made a difference... but at any rate, we knew that the approach we took would either get us the gold or the wood... no in-betweeen. Oh well, no guts no glory!

OT: Misfit changed his Avatar. I liked the Evil Jester, and will be starting a petition for its return. :)

I aggree, especially since it's an avatar that a banner ad on this site was set to a day ago.:p Death to Hellboy! I can send you a hand-drawn evil jester my friend did years ago if you want.:p

The evil jester must return

Thanks to Gator, we now have an updated reference links post on page 1. Since I don't have access to Gengis' post I have added the new links to post #3.

Gator obviously put in a lot of work, thanks for your contribution.

And I haven't forgotten about the evaluation of Alerum's turns. Due shortly.

Guys,

I've been following this game since the beginning and wanted to thank everyone for the great advice. I just finished, and won, my first Regent game with a launch in 2039 (Aztecs, large map, Continents 70%). I trailed Sumaria the whole way and as I had been playing the game a couple weeks, I forgot all about my GA. Well, I built Internet and lo and behold, a GA in 1989. Turned out to be perfectly timed as I had just started building the space ship and I was able to surge ahead and get almost all parts completed in the 20 turns. A really enjoyable game! Thanks again to all who have contributed to this thread...it's really helped me to improve my play.

Will be away this weekend and able to play my turns around sunday evening.

Any updates SK?

I just don't want this one to fall by the wayside.

Hows about you Bugsy? (Edit: I know you are in here lurking around)

@JackRules - feel free to jump in any time and ask questions...
Just beware that you may get dragged in to play (like I did)

Guys,

I'm wondering what Mod or utility you use to get the Civ name to display with each city name on the map. I always loose track of what Civs own which cities. Thanks.

JackRules

I'm not sure how that works. :hmm: I'm sure there is a lurker out there who can give us an answer.

Congrats Jack on your first win. Glad this was of some help to you.
