God Slay'd

The Godslayer's <iPromotionCombatMod>1000</iPromotionCombatMod> against the Avatar promotion and the Avatar promotion's <iBetterDefenderThanPercent>1000</iBetterDefenderThanPercent> tag probably cancel each other out as far as selecting who the defender should be, thus leaving it as just a comparison between base strength. That would probably mean that Auric Ascended would defend first unless he was injured and there was a unit like Eurabates or the Mithril Golem in the same stack.

damn, I didn't know the increased chance to defend is 1000 for Avatar. that's pretty harsh for Auric Ascended. why is this even needed? his high strength will cause him to defend most of the time anyway.

The bonus vs Avatar is needed to ensure that the unit with Godslayer will step up and godslay when Auric attacks its stack. Without that Godslayer could still kill him (because python says so), but Auric could potentially shred other units in the defending stack while the joker with Godslayer stands there watching.

As it is now even a lowly scout will rush to the front of the army and sacrifice itself to protect the other units and stop Auric, which is as it should be.

that's not a problem, since when you attack with Auric you should be smart enough to check that you're not attacking someone that's wielding the Godslayer ;)

the problem is that if the weapon with the godslayer can also automatically target Auric in a stack like it had marksman is way too harsh on the illian player imho.

Well it gets back to not attacking with him. Like what you do is to keep him behind your army, not in it, and ideally on a peak. You could be extra epic about it and actually surround him with smaller stacks to keep him safe... sounds annoying and excessive, but, he's a god, and really goddamn powerful as artillery, worth going out of your way to protect.

So, I got Auric and actually need him to win the game. The Calabim ran away with the other two continents & vasselized the Doviello, Good Elves, and Sidar. The Calabim also vasselized the Bannor & Mercurians on my continent (I fought them basically the whole game) when I completed the Draw. Their score is significantly higher than mine. So I went for Auric & now don't know what to do with him. How do I win with Auric? Is it a time limit? Conquest? Move him to Letum Frigidalis (not even sure if its present on this map)? Inquiring minds want to know...

Auric is not a victory condition. You win with Auric by using him to assist you in your other victory conditions. The one thing to remember though is that Auric's snowfall can kill. So take Auric, a High priest or two (or archmage), then move them up, snowfall with the priest or mage to bring their health down, then hit em with Auric's snowfall, and you can kill any stack. Have fun conquering.

I had the situation where Herne had godslayer (and scorched staff) and Auric did not stand in the defense line to take his justified beating.

Herne had blitz, which I didn't use because my marksmen took care of Auric's buddies and down he went under the hooves of the righeteous hero.

Anyway it seems auric may actually sidestep in favor of other defeneder, which seems a little curious considering what was said earlier. The other defenders were certainly nowhere in the weight class.

Auric didn't take his place because the Godslayer gives 1000% vs avatar units - Auric is an avatar. If you had given the godslayer to a Marksman, that 1000% vs Avatar units would have made Auric the weakest unit in the stack, and therefore the one the marksman would have attacked.

The issue that most people have is that Auric defends against regular units too much, and since he doesn't have cannibalize or first strikes or anything like that, he tends to end up dead, fast.

OK, ended up winning a time limit game. The Calabim were just too big, or I got Auric too late, to dominate. I was definitely on my way, though, and could have pushed harder there at the end if I hadn’t been looking at the turn counter.

Interesting game. You can kill units on a large scale with Auric Ascended. I was able to kill so many of the Calabim’s stygian guards that they were able to restart their economy & start teching again. In the last 70 or so turns (about when I got Auric Ascended) I went from being behind by about 1900 points to being ahead by about the same amount. Things would have moved faster if there had been fewer continents. But who knows, on a Pangea map the Calabim could have taken me out prior to reaching that point.

If the Bannor/Mercurian’s hadn’t attacked me so early, or had been more willing to come to terms, then maybe I would have been farther along techwise at the end. Getting Mokka, Orthus, and all four horsemen on my continent certainly didn’t help either. One things for sure - couple AA with Drifta and the Illians definitely have good late-game toys. Drifta with blitz, crown of command, and althame (sp?) was a thing of beauty. Just make sure you get them early enough to use them.
